Traditional flashlights are great! But there's a problem: they are too big, and too heavy, to mount and attach to things, and require special hardware to do so.
Furthermore, the flashlights of today are generally not that different from the flashlights of the 1890s (when they were first invented): cylindrical, pipe-like objects.
Over a century after the flashlight’s invention, I assumed I could find one that was versatile, easy to carry, lightweight, compact, and attachable to almost anything—without requiring separate mounting brackets—but try as I might, I simply couldn’t find what I was looking for.
So, I decided to invent what I was looking for, and ended up with the LightMan.
The unique, patent-pending design includes six powerful neodymium magnets, a heavy-duty clip, and—this is what really sets the LightMan apart from the competition—a retractable reel.
The reel allows the user to separate the light from the battery housing, rendering the flashlight lighter, smaller, and easier to fit into tight spaces, thanks to the magnets embedded in the lens-and-reflector assembly.
The LightMan also uses two high-performance, one-watt Cree XPC LEDs, which provide a powerful 120 lumens worth of light. Also included are a DC-to-DC voltage regulator, and a clicking, on-off switch. The twin-head beam design, together with the textured reflector, gives the LightMan a powerful, wide beam pattern.
I designed the LightMan to use a single CR123 battery, because this relatively small, light battery, can power the remarkably bright LightMan, for up to eight hours (depending on the brand of battery). Energizer CR123 lithium batteries, with 1500 mah capacity, work very well, in my experience. Rechargeable CR123 batteries also work with the LightMan. And most importantly, CR123 batteries are commonly available in brick-and-mortar stores, as they are commonly used for digital cameras, as well as other electronics.
I made the prototype at home, and in my auto shop, using commonly available tools. But to be able to mass produce, meet minimum quantity orders, and bring the cost down, I need your backing, here at Kickstarter.

Risks and challenges
Since I have a fully functional prototype, which I use every day at work (I’m an auto mechanic), I’ve been able to fine tune the LightMan, so that it does everything I need it to do—and does it well.
The LightMan is ready for production. The only possible problem I could foresee, is a delay from the factory, that will fabricate the parts.
I plan to ship the first batch of LightMans (LightMen?) by mid-December. And in case there’s a delay from the primary factory, I have selected a factory in Newark, California, as a back-up.
