Intrepid Camera Co. has been designing and producing Large Format Cameras for the last three years. But with over 1000 cameras shipped to happy customers, we set our sights on something a little bigger.

Introducing the Intrepid 8x10, the most affordable and lightest production 8x10 Camera ever. Not sure what an 8x10 camera is? Simple: they are large analogue film cameras that allow you to have complete control over the camera and shoot onto massive sheets of film.

The Intrepid 8x10 takes everything we have learnt from our other large format cameras and refines it into the best camera we have ever made; a simple, beautiful and fully functional field camera, all for an amazing price. At Intrepid Camera Co. we genuinely care about the future of large format photography, a future that is dependent on people getting involved and having access to this incredible form of photography. That's why we do what we do - and it's what motivates us to keep innovating.

The greatest joy of large format photography is the sense of adventure you get whilst out in the field. A slow pace, and feeling of connection with your surroundings is something that goes hand in hand with large format photography- and even more so when you can capture every single tone and detail onto a sheet of 8x10 film.

One of the greatest things about 8x10 is the wide range of options you have for creating an image.

If you want to stick to the traditional, you can shoot film still manufactured by several companies including Ilford, Kodak, Fuji, Foma, Berger, Adox, Arrista, Rollie, and Shanghai. You can shoot Instant film made by Impossible. Another great thing about having a large sheet of film is how easy it is to make an incredible contact print from it, with only some basic and affordable kit.

If you want to experiment a bit, the list of alternative processes is huge! From wet plate to the RA4 reversal process. The ability to get a large print right from your camera is unlike any other photographic experience. During prototyping we have loved using paper negatives, this fun and super cheap process produces some great results.

Designing and producing a whole range of high quality and affordable accessories, including lens boards, reducing backs, film holders and whatever the community can come up with! This is a fantastic opportunity to get involved and to help shape the future of Large Format Photography.

The design work, production planning and testing have all been done, but to start production we need to upgrade some of our machinery. This is why we have come to Kickstarter- to raise the funds to buy a larger CNC Router and Laser Cutter. These are vital bits of machinery for us and we won't be able to produce the 8x10 with out them.

Timeline

June - Whilst the Kickstarter is running we can put the machinery we already have to use and start building up stock of the smaller components -and can order all the Aluminium Components from our supplier. We can also order all the standard parts we will need like screws, knobs and gears. Ship Pins + Patches at the end of the Month.

July - Continue production and finishing of smaller wooden components, finish all aluminium components, bellows and ground glass. By now we will also be well into production of film holders and 4x5 reducing backs.

August - New machinery arrives at the beginning of the month. Production of larger wooden components for the 8x10 can start immediately as we are already trained on the machines. We should have all the components for the cameras finished by the end of the month and assembly can start.

September - Assembly, Testing and Shipping by end of Month.

We are well rehearsed in the process of building large format cameras. The team are experts in their craft and, unlike a lot of Kickstarters, we have already finished the design and fully worked out and tested the process. Just like with the last time we were on Kickstarter we will be posting regular updates every 1 or 2 weeks providing you with an insight into production and any other exciting developments.

"British Journal of Photography exists to champion the artists, innovators and rebels reinventing photography…. like a couple of graduates in Brighton reinventing large format photography for a new generation."- British Journal of Photography

"They are making large format photography available at a price point and quality never seen before, making it possible to new users to buy new cameras without being scared of old or expensive gear" - Nicolas Llasera, Nicos Photography Show

"The ability to achieve the highest quality image possible has now been made available to so many by the energy and creative genius of Intrepid Cameras." - Alex Schneideman, Flow Photographic

"It’s very exciting what Intrepid Camera is doing for large format photography. Their lightweight and affordable cameras are opening doors to a new generation of photographers, and with more people voting with their wallets to shoot film, I am more hopeful than ever about the future availability of color large format film." - Ben Horne, Landscape Photographer

"I’m really excited about Intrepid’s project to manufacture a 10x8 camera in the mould of their 5x4 one. The company has impressed me with its sensible approach to making an affordable, lightweight 5x4, a brilliant ‘starter’ camera for large format photography. Not only did they make a great camera, they listened to the feedback from their customers and made an updated and improved model. Both this philosophy and their experience stand them in great stead for making what could be a ground-breaking model in the 10x8 arena. The possibilities it will open up are huge - not least for a contact based printing method - and I for one will be looking to get my hands on one!" - Richard Pickup, Fine Art Photographer

"For making sublime contact prints and just for its relation to the human and the natural scale, the 8x10 remains the ultimate tool of photographic expression. So the moment is none too soon that the Intrepid Team turns their engineering talent to the form. Our holders are primed. Please join us in supporting the launch of The Intrepid 8x10. - Sam Hiser, New55

"I love what Intrepid has been doing the last few years. They're bringing light weight, affordable cameras to the market while maintaining top notch quality. It's really exciting to see innovations like this taking place in large format! I can't wait to get the new 8x10 and help support this company that continues to support us large format photographers." - Alan Brock, Landscape Photographer

The Intrepid 8x10 doesn't come with a lens so you will need to source your own, this is an exciting prospect and there is a huge range of lenses available second hand. Some of the best places to check are eBay, KEH, Ffordes and Catlabs, when looking at second hand lenses there are a few things its important to check.

  • The glass is clean and has no fungus.
  • The lens is in a shutter that does not stick and works well (accurate speeds etc).
  • The lens filter ring has no dents on it.
When you have your lens you will need to make sure it is in a shutter, and is mounted on a Sinar size board (140mm x 140mm), no worries if you cant find a board, we will have our own affordable version on our website very soon and are also planning an adapter board for Linhof/Technika size boards.

For more information about what lenses to look for check out this excellent list.

Risks and challenges

Every project like this carries a certain level of risk- but we are already established and experienced camera makers, which greatly reduces the risk traditionally associated with crowd-funding. The main issues that could face our project are delays and having to remanufacture large quantities of parts. In order to avoid these happening we have done a huge amount of planning, testing and prototyping.
