Max Zillion is a jazz saxophone player, and his horn is called Alto Ego. Max makes crazy, original, generally unpopular music, while Alto is the brains of the outfit. Max is like most jazz musos - broke. He gets gigs - his agent, a ruthless lizard called Meen McMudda (Mister McMudda to you!) sees to that - but the gigs usually end in chaos and Max winds up broke again. Often, the trouble starts when Max starts playing his wild be-bop, and usually it's Alto who gets them out of the mess. Naturally, McMudda always makes sure his percentage is safe. Max always has another blues to play.
I'm Hunt Emerson, and I first drew Max Zillion comics in the 1970s. In 1986 I published a collection of the comics, called Jazz Funnies. It was popular, and has been out of print for 25 years or so. Since then I've drawn more Max stories, including many in colour, until now there are about 40 pages that weren't in Jazz Funnies, including some drawn especially for this edition. I want to collect all the stories in one book, and that book is called HOT JAZZ.
HOT JAZZ will be 144 pages, in black and white and colour. Along with the Max Zillion comics it will contain the Jazz Lounge Gallery - a unique collection of jazz-inspired drawings from 40 comics artists. The list includes some of the great names in comics, but I don't want to tell you yet who's in there - I want to keep it as a surprise. You'll recognise some of them, you'll enjoy all of them.
HOT JAZZ will be an A4 size trade paperback for comic and book stores, but the Kickstarter edition - which will be the one you get if you pledge to the project - will be something special. It will be a hard back, linen bound book, with silver foil lettering and graphics. It will have a unique wrap-around cover which will have your name listed on it as a Backer, and it will come with a specially printed Ex Libris book plate signed by me, for you to put in your volume. We call the Kickstarter edition the De-Luxe Book, and it is a really handsome item!
I've devised a list of interesting goodies as Rewards for increased levels of funding - you'll find that list on the right. I've tried to keep the Rewards list fairly simple, but I think they're fun and collectable. Here's the T-shirt design - 2-colour front print and 1-colour back print.
I'm really pleased with HOT JAZZ and I'd love to have you as one of the Backers!
Risks and challenges
Hot Jazz is all but complete. All the stories are drawn, and I'm finishing the design and layout now. It will be printed in China, which means we have some weeks to wait for delivery, but we confidently expect that you'll have the book in your hands in November. Some of the rewards will need more time to prepare, so delivery on them will take longer. Last year I ran a similar Kickstarter campaign for my Calculus Cat book, and that worked out successfully. And we've learned from that one, so we don't anticipate any serious problems with Hot Jazz.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
