About this project
A portable, flexible monopod for your phone or GoPro with a super-powerful magnetic base? It's here!
"Selfies" was the word of the year in 2013. In 2014 let's all agree to start taking selfies that don't look like selfies -- with the GripSnap! The GripSnap (patent pending) is AWESOME, whether you're taking a group photo with your friends or doing kickass GoPro videos from the hood of your car. There are so many uses for the GripSnap, you're going to need more drive space for all of your crazy photos!
It's not just for iPhones!
The GripSnap works with smartphones of all shapes and sizes up to and including the Samsung Galaxy Note, which is 3.27" wide.
Stop asking people to take your picture, or worse, having a phone full of pictures without you in them! Finally, everyone can be in the photo -- just snap the GripSnap to pretty much any ferrous metal surface, and using one of many available camera timer apps, take pictures that include the whole crew, instead of always missing one person…
Stretch Goal Added!!
If we reach the $25,000 mark, we're adding a new reward -- the GripSnap Car Mount! If you use your phone for navigation or if you want an easy dash-cam setup, you'll want this! See the prototype in the GripSnap Update #4
To reach this goal, we're going to need your help spreading the word. Please share this project on social media to get the word out:
A few other uses for the GripSnap in the video above…
How do you take a hands-free selfie?
It's easy! There are lots of camera timer apps out there. Some are even voice or sound activated, so you can clap your hands or yell "Cheese!" and your phone will take your picture. Here are a few of the apps we like that work GREAT with the GripSnap:
Mounting your GoPro was never easier:
I have manufactured and brought other products to market and my last big product landed me a spot on Shark Tank. But this is the coolest product I've developed, because it has so many uses. I'm psyched to get one into your hands!!
We want you to have your GripSnap as soon as possible. Here's the basic timeline we're looking at:
- July/August: Meet lots of cool Kickstarters, continue work on mold and plastic encasement for the magnet.
- September: Finalize the conduit type/source/size/length. Have our manufacturers crank out a bunch of our custom sized magnets and get them coated and shipped.
- October: Shipping from the manufacturer ALWAYS takes longer than expected, so October is our target month to receive phone clips, production conduit and complete magnets.
- November: Assembly and fulfillment. We've got a crazy schedule ahead of us, but we've been doing the footwork for the GripSnap for over a year. We're confident we can make our shipping goal.
Risks and challenges
We have worked very hard to get the GripSnap ready for Kickstarter and full-scale manufacturing, but here are some challenges ahead:
MANUFACTURING: Due to the brittle nature of neodymium magnets, they have a tendency to shatter, which was a problem with our early prototypes. To ensure that this won't happen on the production models, we're working on a strong, but thin, plastic casing for our magnets. We've already got a manufacturer working on the mold and should have samples late this summer. We have confidence in our manufacturer to deliver a great final product, but we have a back-up manufacturer at the ready, should anything go sideways.
PRODUCT ADJUSTMENTS: As the GripSnap gets closer to production, we're going to continue to do some fine tuning, especially on the conduit tubing. Each generation of materials we try gets better and our current version has a high degree of flexibility, coupled with good rigidity. That said, we're going to be able to shorten it, making the GripSnap even more compact, while retaining the flexibility to bend the GripSnap into any position required. As we fine-tune the design, I'll definitely give updates and pictures showing how things evolve. This stuff is fun!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
