By Kickstarting this project we aim to pay everyone involved in this project fairly, including the contributors, designers, typesetters, printers, editors and more! Something which we believe should always be done!

We have exclusive offers for Kickstarters, including the chance to have your name in the book and be part of a community that supports indie publishing.

 Disturbing the Beast

Disturbing the Beast is a collection of weird fiction stories by some of the best women writers in the UK, including Aliya Whiteley and Kirsty Logan.

It's our debut collection as Boudicca Press and we're really keen to showcase and celebrate the strength, courage and literary talents of women, particularly in the weird fiction genre.

Disturbing the Beast features fictional tales that explore lesser talked about female centred topics including sexual abuse, pregnancy issues and body image. We’re keen to unearth these subjects in a healthy and respectful way, something that we feel is not often considered in mainstream, contemporary literature. It's a collection of short stories in the weird fiction genre, from UK based women and those who identify as women and is set to feature breath-taking prose and thought-provoking plots.

We're really excited to have the support of Aliya and Kirsty behind the project, two of the best authors in this genre, who will be producing new stories for the collection.

Submit your story!

Another little side note - the collection is still open for new short story submissions until 14th September. So, if you think you have a short story that's suitable, or you know someone who would love to get involved, take action and share this with them. We're looking for stories from women or those who identify as women, in the UK. Check out our website for full submission details: Submit to Boudicca Press

About Boudicca Press

Boudicca Press celebrates the strength, courage and literary talents of women. We publish weird, literary and relationship fiction by women in the UK.

It's run by Helen Ellwood and Nici West, two writer/editors who have a passion for breath-taking literature, women's voices and women's stories. We created Boudicca because we felt that women weren't getting enough exposure in the weird fiction genre.

We love strong female-led stories filled with breath-taking prose, in the genre of weird, literary and relationship fiction. Stories that stay with you. Stories that are reflective and deep. Stories that empower women. We publish short stories from women or people who identify as women, of all ages in the UK. We particularly love pieces that address lesser talked about female centred topics such as sexual abuse, pregnancy issues and body image.

Disturbing the Beast is our debut anthology.

She was editor for independent publisher, Quartet Books, where she worked on a number of successful books. She's also a successful freelance project manager and editor.

Helen is a writer, editor and proofreader. She has been part of the scriptwriting team for two BBC funded docudramas, had short stories broadcast on local radio and has had three plays staged by amateur theatre companies. Her memoir was longlisted in the Mslexia memoir competition in 2014.

Risks and challenges

We already have Kirsty Logan and Aliya Whiteley on board and some fantastic submissions to join our talented two authors. We've already got the artwork sorted, which you can see above, and all other people involved who need to pull the strings to make it happen. Both Nici and Helen are experienced editors and project managers. The risks at this stage are minimal.
