About this project
In 2014, my comedic space opera Starship Grifters was published. The book got rave reviews (Hugh Howey, New York Times bestselling author of Wool, even called it his favorite read of the year!). Since then, I've been asked dozens of times when I'm going to write a sequel to Starship Grifters. The first one was a blast to write, so a few weeks ago I decided to go ahead and do another Rex book. In fact, I'm hoping to move ahead with my plans to write a series of books in the Starship Grifters universe.
At this point, my plan is to release three new works in the series:
First, I'm going to revise, expand and re-release my short story "The Chicolini Incident." I like this story, but it's a little rough, as I wrote it very quickly in advance of the Starship Grifters release. I plan to flesh the story out a bit, get a better cover designed and re-release it as an ebook. I expect to send "The Chicolini Incident" to supporters by the end of September 2016. "The Chicolini Incident" will be available in ebook only (no paperback).
Second, I'm going to finish a novella I started called The Yanthus Prime Job, featuring Pepper Melange, the buxom bounty hunter from Starship Grifters. I expect The Yanthus Prime Job to be around 20,000 words. It will also be published as an ebook. I expect to send The Yanthus Prime Job to supporters by the end of October 2016. The Yanthus Prime Job will be an ebook only (no paperback).
Third, I'm going to publish a full-length sequel to Starship Grifters, called Aye, Robot. See, it's funny because the title Starship Grifters was a reference to the classic scifi novel Starship Troopers, and Aye, Robot is a... you know what? Never mind. The point is that Aye, Robot is going to feature interstellar con man Rex Nihilo and his faithful robotic assistant Sasha, plus space pirates, S'possels, the Galactic Malarchy, and loads of other fun stuff. I expect to send Aye, Robot to Kickstarter supporters in November 2016. Aye, Robot will be available in both paperback and ebook formats.
I need your help to make this happen, though. Besides the work of writing the books, there's cover design, editing, marketing and all that kind of stuff. These things cost money. Especially cover design. The cover of Starship Grifters is one of my favorite covers of all time, and I want to make sure the rest of the covers match it in retro-scifi awesomeness. I've already had a cover designed for The Yanthus Prime Job, and have contracted with the same artist to do the cover for Aye, Robot.
Eventually all the books will be available on Amazon, but Kickstarter supporters will receive their copy of each book at least 2 weeks before it's available anywhere else. I hope to release audio versions of all the books eventually, but audiobooks aren't included in this Kickstarter.
In addition to the Starship Grifters Universe books, I'm offering some pretty sweet rewards, including ebooks and paperbacks of three books by other authors:
- Bill the Vampire by Rick Gualtieri
- Ctrl+Alt+Revolt by Nick Cole
- The Last Volunteer by Steve Wetherell
I'm also giving away Starship Grifters posters so you can have your own 22" x 36" rendition of that beautiful cover art, The Big Sheep drink koozies (AKA Kroese Koozies), as modeled by yours truly. (This is a serving suggestion only; you must provide your own beverage.)
Also, I'm giving away Starship Grifters t-shirts at the higher levels (you'll have a chance to specify gender/size after you pledge).
Starship Grifters currently has 147 Amazon reviews, with a 4.3 star average! Here are the most recent reviews as of 8/9/2016:
Still not convinced? Go to Amazon and download the free sample of Starship Grifters. If you don't laugh your ass off, save your money for those Speed Racer oven mitts or whatever.
I'm really looking forward to getting back to the Starship Grifters universe, so pledge today and don't forget to tell your friends!
Risks and challenges
I've written thirteen novels and run five successful Kickstarters. All of my Kickstarters have delivered within a month of the projected finish date. Overall the project is already about 30% completed and barring acts of God and the like I don't foresee any problems delivering per the schedule I've specified.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
