Who’d Like a Special Edition?

We could not be more humbled and gratified by the speed at which our backers—existing and new—rocketed us through a terrific weekend and right up to our next stretch goal! The upgrades to the Player’s Kit and Fan Kit are now a reality!

So what’s next? How about a leather-bound deluxe edition of The Strange corebook?

This handsome special edition will be bound in debossed leather. It will feature a cloth bookmark and gilt page edging, special endpapers, and extra color plates. (Other than that, the content will be identical to the regular edition, so it’s a fully playable version of the corebook as well as a collector’s item.) It will be amazing!

How will you be able to get one? There are several ways:

• We’ll offer it as a straight-up add-on for $120.

• Or, as a $60 add-on, you can upgrade the print corebook you’re otherwise getting to the deluxe version. (In other words, if your reward level includes a print corebook, for a $60 upgrade you can turn that into a deluxe corebook.)

• If you’re backing at a $450 or higher reward level, we’re going to upgrade your corebook for free! (ULTIMATE RETAILERS, we’ll upgrade two copies of your corebooks.)

The deluxe corebook will not be made available for sale. As we did with Numenera, we’ll print a few extra (in case there are damages in transit or to cover other contingencies), which may mean we’ll have a few copies available at Gen Con next summer, but the only reliable way to get this—ever—is through this Kickstarter!

We sneak-peeked it yesterday, but here’s another look! (Remember, like all of our product images, this is just a mockup.)

This is a stretch goal a LOT of people have been asking for. Remember, the key to hitting all of our stretch goals is to get out and spread the word, and only YOU can make that happen. Let's do it, and get ourselves a deluxe corebook!

The Strange. Explore. Defend. Create.

So in order to recieve this deluxe edition i just have to upgrade my current pledge from $60 to $120.I only ask because i cant find any Mention of the deluxe book in any of the pledge level descriptions.Sorry if this is a silly question but i'm new to kickstarter

@Sean: I didn't bring it up to complain. I really didn't, I think it's awesome that you guys are giving us the upgrade for free. I am just spending $500 which is above budget, and paying an extra $60 just isn't feasible for me. (maybe it is for others, but $560 is a lot for an RPG).

It just seems that at that level of spend you would get both is all.

      Ah beat to the punch!

@ Chris it doesn't say all the products....it specifically mentions the different packages.

Like "All the Print Book Package" which is talking about specific books in the package. The fact they decided to upgrade (if we meet the stretch goal) one of those books is a bonus.

Basically it is a title of the package not necessarily talking about ALL the books. It clearly states what is in each package.

This of course is my take on it. I still have another $60 in my pledge for a second core book. Yes I can get it cheaper later through Amazon after it is released but this is to get a product funded so don't mind a little extra for that. It is still a great deal!

@Chris/Matthew - I see what you're getting at and I think the way that MCG has dispersed information between here and http://www.TheStrangeRPG.com is partly to blame.

According to the official website (http://www.thestrangerpg.com/#!/the-kickstarter/special-reward-notes/) under the "Every Strange Product through 2015" notes: "And it doesn’t include Kickstarter-exclusive items—just the books and other products we make for sale through hobby shops or online. (Of course, you’ll get any Kickstarter-exclusive items you’re otherwise entitled to through your backer rewards.)"

According to the update, the deluxe edition isn't going to be available for general sale, so it is not considered part of the "all products" deal as outlined on http://www.TheStrangeRPG.com. So really, the fact that they've decided to upgrade the core book for Superfans and above is a nice bonus.

Obviously, I don't speak for MCG, so perhaps they'll weigh in, but what they've offered with this update is above and beyond what they've advertised for Superfan levels IMHO.

@Chris Tavares: that was my thought, but I didn't want to be a complainer.

    7. Chris Tavares on

With the SuperFan pledges, when they say "All products", that makes me think I should be getting All Products. The limited edition corebook and the standard corebook are two separate products, and therefore I would expect both.

    8. Sean on

@Jonathan - That is true. And they are both great products.

@Sean Numenara has already had 2 glimmer releases this year that wasn't part of the kick starter. Glimmers are small pdf only releases. One was an adventure, The Vortex, and the other was to introduce Lovecraftian elements (think Call of Cthulhu, it even has sanity loss rules)

    10. Sean on

@Matthew - Currently, you'd need to pledge an extra $60 for an Add-on core book. If that is outside your budget, waiting until it hits retail will probably save you some money.

I hate that I missed out on the Numenara Kickstarter too... I didn't even know what kickstarter was back then.

Quick question: The Superfans will be getting a free upgrade for the Special Edition... thank you for that. I know that Special Editions I have I don't use every day because I don't want them getting the normal wear and tear. What do we need to pledge to get an extra copy of the normal book? Or should I just wait till it's released and hit up Amazon? I ask because when you are already spending $500 for the Superfan tier (which is over my budget, but I am doing anyway), I feel like an extra $60 for the everyday core book I will use is more than I can spend.

    12. Sean on

      @Sleet - According to TheStrangeRPG.com:

"Every The Strange Product through 2015: You read that right. Every product we produce for The Strange in 2014 and 2015—print and PDF. Our production schedule isn’t nailed down at this point, but we expect that to include (in addition to the corebook and Player’s Guide) four or more hardcover books, several sizeable softcovers, and 15 to 18 PDF-only products. It will be a lot! This reward doesn’t duplicate items already part of your Kickstarter reward, so you won’t get a second copy of the Player’s Guide, for example. And it doesn’t include Kickstarter-exclusive items—just the books and other products we make for sale through hobby shops or online. (Of course, you’ll get any Kickstarter-exclusive items you’re otherwise entitled to through your backer rewards.)"

Some of that content will be in the form of books unlocked as part of the Kickstarter, but I'm sure there will be a number of non-KS products released to make it worthwhile. MCG has stated that Superfan backers will be treated well and I, for one, have no reason to doubt them given their track record so far.

@Ryan: Thanks for the breakdown. I was valuing the Kits a little lower (while they had some neat stuff, the value isn't quite there for me just yet), but even then, it wouldn't take many more books to make this feel worth it. Looks like I'm moving on up!

    14. Ryan Ford on

@Sleet The way I see it, the Superfan gets you the equivalent of the Strange Lover of All Books ($250) plus both Kits ($110) plus the upgrade to deluxe ($60, assuming the stretch goal is hit). That right there is $420. Now, I'm an early bird, so that means the playtest access plus ALL additional products is running me $30. For non-early birds, it's $80. Assuming you don't find value to the playtest access, that's $80 speculation on what the value of more than a year of support products might be. Everyone evaluates risks differently, but that seems like a sure thing. Plus it'll get us closer to future stretch goals which makes the value of everything better.

I hate that I missed out on the Numenera KS, so I will be making up for it here. Gimme the Deluxe Edition!

    16. Ryan Ford on

Woot! My Superfan pledge is about to become an even better steal. I so love my deluxe Numenera, and was greatly hoping The Strange would get the same treatment. Soon it will, I've no doubt. 8-D

That's making those Superfan pledges a little more tempting... The only thing keeping me from snagging one now is not having the slightest idea how many additional products you guys plan on putting out in those time periods.
