Numenera is a brand-new, science fantasy rpg set in the distant future. It focuses on story and ideas over mechanics.
Step a billion years into the future—into the Ninth World, where
the remnants of previous civilizations’ technologies are indistinguishable from
magic. Based on Monte’s Cook’s Cypher System, a new RPG system that focuses on
story and ideas over mechanics.

4,658 backers pledged $517,255 to help bring this project to life.

IMPORTANT: Rewards schedule

The Numenera corebook is designed and developed and in the hands of the editors, Shanna Germain and Ray Vallese, and some of it is already being laid out by the graphic designer, the amazing Sarah Robinson. Ditto the Player's Guide. If you want to know more about what's going to be in those products, read this (written a while ago).

Meanwhile, the XP cards are being designed by graphic artist Kali Fitzgerald, and our artists have finished most of the art and maps for the corebook and have started on the covers and interiors of the other products.

Since everything is in motion and we're actually getting to the point where we can see the release date of the game fast approaching, I wanted to let you know when you can expect the various rewards from supporting this Kickstarter. Many, of course, like the desktop wallpapers, playtester updates, and the on-line seminars, have already been delivered.

Before August

The first up is the short fiction pieces anthology that came from the $380,000 stretch goal. We're working on that now, and I hope to have this to you (delivered electronically) by the end of May.

Backers at the Art Lover level should hopefully receive their signed prints by June.

Also in June, I am going to be putting together a call-out for teachers and libraries who would like to get a copy of the game, as promised in the Kickstarter $100,000 stretch goal.

Backers at the On-Line Gamer level will have their articles finished and posted by June as well.

In July, look for a form to let us update your address if you have moved since you originally filled out your rewards form.

The big month is going to be August. In August, the following physical rewards will ship:

  • Numenera Corebook
  • Deluxe Numenera Corebook
  • Numenera Player's Guide
  • Numenera Thunderstone from AEG
  • XP Deck
  • Cypher Deck
  • T-Shirts
  • Dice
  • GM Screen

The following electronic rewards will also be delivered in August:

  • Numenera App
  • Numenera Corebook pdf
  • Numenera Player's Guide pdf
  • XP Deck pdf Cypher Deck pdf
  • Exclusive Kickstarter adventure (The Nightmare Switch)
  • Numenera Theme music
  • Numenera fold-up terrain from Fat Dragon Games

After August

Unique Characters: Once the game is out, we'll start contacting backers of the Unique Character level so that we can create special, one-of-a-kind characters for you. Delivery of these (electronically) should be completed by end of September.

On-Line Games: These sessions will be held in September and October.

Store Visits: These are being scheduled now, and likely will be in September and October.

Adventures: After some consideration, we have decided that the three 32-page adventures are going to be combined into one, large, 96 page book. We can do a lot to make the product better in that format. But to make sure everyone gets AT LEAST what they paid for, everyone who ordered even one of the adventures will get the adventure book. That means that they will effectively get ALL THREE adventures. The collected adventure book will be called The Devil's Spine. The current plan is that this product will ship both electronically and physically in the late fall, tentatively scheduled for October.

Other Books: The Ninth World Bestiary and other books of the line (as well as the Creature Card deck) will come out starting in early 2014.

    3. Michael Caldwell on May 13, 2013

Hey, just caught that there was going to be some terrain available from Fat Dragon Games. I do not recall that being in the KS, how cool. So...does that mean minis are a possibility down the line?

As the update says, we'll be sending around a change of address form right before we start shipping.

I'll be at GenCon this year, and I'll let you know all about the Numenera events we'll be running soon.

If you need to double-check your add-ons or have other questions about what you ordered, contact Annie at She'll help you out.

    6. Fred Lloyd on April 28, 2013

I'm curious what kind of presence you are planning at GenCon this year?

    7. MageMistress on April 25, 2013

I moved, and I want to make sure I get my stuff. How do I submit an address change? Thanks!

Am I close in guessing that the personalization requests (for those that pledged) will be out in late July/Early August as well?

Cameron: It's not possible to change the wording of a backer level reward once a Kickstarter has begun.

      Cameron on April 24, 2013

Thanks, Monte. Looks like some wording changed over time maybe and it's been awhile, so a good reminder was needed.

Monte: The folks that did Achtung! Cthulhu are using BackerKit to help keep track of pledge items. Have you thought of using that?

Cameron: You backed at the BESTIARY CONTRIBUTOR level, so your contribution will go in the Bestiary. We'll likely be contacting contributors of that level in the next month or so.
Mike: Similarly, expect contact pretty soon.
      H.W.: Yes and yes.

    14. H. W. McCray on April 24, 2013

Will all of the August items be available at Gen Con? And will Monte be available to sign a book?

    15. Mark McCann on April 24, 2013

Thanks for clearing that up for me Monte. I was thinking that was the case but wanted to make sure.
Well, roll on August and all my wonderful swag :-)

I never saw any notification referring to the character I was to design for what I swore was the player's guide, but now says campaign book.

    17. Mike Loftus on April 23, 2013

Wow. You are rocking that schedule Monte and crew! Thanks for keeping your backers informed and getting those products out the door!

Would Bestiary contributors be contacted for contributions in Winter then?

Keith: It's not really feasible for us to allow people to change their orders at this point, but everything but the exclusive adventure will be available for purchase. Speaking of which...
Mark: The "printed" copies are just going to be printouts of the ebook version so that there's something physical to sign and send (because people wanted it signed, because it's exclusive, so kind of a collector's thing, I guess). So it will ship at the same time.

    19. Mark McCann on April 23, 2013

That's awesome. I can't wait for August now.
One small question though. Since the electronic version of "The Nightmare Switch" is being sent out in August, does that mean that the printed copies will be sent in August too?

    20. Dynamic Adventures Inc. on April 23, 2013

Wow you are moving fast, very excited!!!

    21. Seth on April 23, 2013

Well, come August it will be a very happy birthday for me indeed!

    22. Keith & Diana on April 23, 2013

      August? Fantastic!
Is it possible to add stuff to our orders at this point? After playing the playtest, I now comprehend the desire for a Cypher deck... and thus would kinda love one. Is it possible, or do I need to wait to order online retail?

    23. Paul Roberts on April 23, 2013

OK, that's rockin'. Looking forward to it as it's generating some serious excitement in my gaming group.

    24. Mike Ott on April 23, 2013

is there any way to see what add-ons we selected?

And Bill, the deluxe corebook is the leatherbound version
