We want to make a disc of Gesualdo's astonishing late madrigals (from his 5th and 6th books, 1613).
This is some of the most remarkable music ever written: anguished, ecstatic and wildly chromatic, presenting extreme emotional states and hugely challenging for the performers - but incredibly rewarding too.
We've been singing Gesualdo for over 10 years and have performed his madrigals to acclaim all over Europe - in Milan, in Naples (his old haunt), in Paris and and in London's Wigmore Hall among many others. Our approach is meticulous and historically informed, taking care over the special tuning required to achieve his famous chromatic shifts, but above all we focus on the drama, the text and the emotional immediacy of the music.
We've broadcast Gesualdo many times but we've never recorded any for CD. Now, thanks to independent German label Winter&Winter, we have the chance. We've released three discs of contemporary music with them in the past, and now they have invited us to expand our relationship into early music, by our favourite Gesualdo madrigals early in 2019 for release later in the year. Of course we said Yes, Please!
So now we need to raise the money for rehearsing and recording. Both of these take time and patience - and we are determined to make this the best disc we possibly can.
We're going to record early in 2019 in one of our favourite acoustics, Orford Church in Suffolk. We'll rehearse for a week in London and then spend 3 days recording.
We aim to raise £7000 (about 50% of what the project will actually cost) through this Kickstarter campaign. We've managed to save some funds over the last few years for this special project, but we can't make it happen without your help.
We love this music deeply, and want passionately to have the chance to commit our interpretations to disc.
Please support us and help us to make this dream a reality.
Risks and challenges
We have made many recordings before and are used to the risks and challenges the process brings. Our singers, producer and label are all on board. Our biggest challenge is to find the funding to make this happen!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
