Debtzilla is a fun cooperative Superhero board game where players have to work together to achieve victory over Debtzilla and its villains. To achieve victory, players must power up their heroes and defeat all the villains and confront Debtzilla as the final boss before Debtzilla grows too powerful and initiates the Debt Apocalypse or when all the citizens are bankrupted. Each superhero has a different playing style and hero synergies are important in beating the game.
A turn is played over the following PHASES:
The key to winning the game is to find the balance between powering up your heroes and preventing Debtzilla from becoming too strong:
- Powering up your heroes too quickly by over borrowing money to buy gadgets will allow you to defeat Villains quickly and prevent citizen bankruptcy. However, your borrowings will grow Debtzilla's power more, speeding up Debt Apocalypse.
- Powering up your heroes too slowly by saving money conservatively will allow villains to run rampant and bankrupt too many citizens, leading to defeat as Debtzilla will quickly wipe out the few surviving citizens
To win the game, all heroes are to work as a team and take on the below duties to maximize the chance of killing the ultimate boss - Debtzilla :
- Early Game hero - Borrows money aggressively and buy gadgets early to prevent villains from running rampant.
- Late Game hero - Starts slow but build up a strong cashflow to buy powerful Gadgets to take out difficult villains and Debtzilla later in the game.
- Support hero - Focuses on slowing down Debtzilla by paying down debt and buying team support gadgets. Generally weak during fights.
- Specialist hero - Specializes in clearing difficult villains with weak points such as "0" and "7" that is outside of the normal dice range.
Once you have taken out Debtzilla, challenge a even more difficult boss: Instead of debt, Inflationsaurus feeds on luxury spendings and team discipline is key in defeating it.
Debtzilla was initially conceptualized during our design of Wongamania: Banana Economy. At that point of time, we wanted to present the 2007 financial debt crisis in a more creative manner and we got our inspiration from Godzilla. Godzilla is a fearsome Kaiju that feeds on nuclear power and is a force that destroys both friends and foes. Debt has the same double edged sword effect as nuclear power and hence Debtzilla is born as a representation of the destructive power of the growing debt problem around the world.
Debtzilla, was well received after Wongamania: Banana Economy is launched and many people asked us, "Why is Debtzilla only represented by a card in the game? We want to fight Debtzilla!" Hence the idea of turning Debtzilla into a standalone board game was conceived. At that point of time, there was a lot of discussion about Spiderman as a result of the reintroduction of the character back into the Marvel universe. We were inspired by the struggles of Peter Parker as a financially strapped young man, trying to juggle between school work, part time jobs and vigilante activities.
That's when the key design concept of Debtzilla was born: Players get to role play as a secret identity superheros dealing with problems as a salaryman and as a vigilante. And if that's not bad enough, we have Debtzilla as the final boss lurking in the background feeding on the very financial woes of the superheroes. We shared the theme and concept with many people and the idea received universal thumbs up and hence, Project Debtzilla is born....

Risks and challenges
Debtzilla is our 4th game and our 2nd Kickstarter campaign. By now, our team has a solid grasp on the process of designing, developing, manufacturing and delivering a high quality tabletop game. When it comes to a project like this, there are always certain risks regarding production and delivery that are beyond our control and may cause delays. That said, the Aug 2018 delivery deadline is a safe estimation that we are confident we can keep.
As with any foreign production/logistics, we may still be faced with unforeseen circumstances such as manufacturing and shipment delays or errors. If we were to meet with an issue, we promise to keep everyone updated and will share details of the problems and our solutions. Check out our previous campaign on the kind of communication you can expect due to any manufacturing issues or shipping delays. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us at email@example.com. Thank you.
