Wild Mural Project 2012
What will be created:
A 16ft x 88ft outdoor mural.
Heights Theater - M Squared Gallery
339 W. 19th St. Houston, TX 77008
The outside wall (16x88ft) of the Heights Theater is fully visible from the street and is a perfect space to for a new community mural.
The Houston Heights is a community located in northwest-central Houston. The area is rich with culture and has a large artistic community as well as historical significance. Of the many galleries and historical buildings in the area there is one with a fascinating past which stands out. Heights Theater on 19th Street was built in 1929. There were many popular films shown there and it has survived despite the arson in 1968 which destroyed its inside. It remained vacant for several years. It is rumored that Bonnie and Clyde used to hang out there.
Not until 1988, when Sharon and Gus Kopriva purchased the building, did it regain its vivacity. The theater is now home to Gallery M Squared. Despite the challenges of the past, the theater is still a place which houses artistic expression and freedom of thought.
On the Wall:
The mural will be imagery of endangered wildlife. Almost all of the animals included in the composition are endangered/ threatened. Any profit gained from the project will be donated to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
Your contributions will transform an ordinary wall into an extraordinary mural and will help endangered wildlife survive!
