HIT THE HITMAN is a crime comedy about the disorganized side of organized crime.

THE MAN

Buck is an L.A. hitman who’s a few rounds short of a full clip. And the safety is off. But what Buck lacks in expertise, he makes up for in moxie.

Buck is hired by John, a local businessman who’s trying to get his hands on his wife’s inheritance. Unfortunately, John’s not the fastest draw in the West either, to continue the metaphor.

Before long, Buck’s gunning for the hotshot hitman John originally hired to whack the wife. And it looks like it all may blow up in his face. (Alright, alright, that’s the last one, I promise.)

The fun is definitely in the journey on this one!

THE MOTIVE

The project emerged when I came across a headline that read “Man Hires Hitman to Kill Hitman Hired to Kill His Wife”, and I thought “Why would someone need to do that?”

Never mind that I was completely wrong about what the story was actually about. What I thought the headline meant was much more interesting to me than the actual story.

So I set out to write a short film based on my incorrect assumption.

THE MISSION

HIT THE HITMAN is a comedy that acknowledges it's lineage.

I have been a fan of filmmakers like Scorsese, Tarantino, The Coens, P.T. Anderson and Wes Anderson for years. Studying their films has helped me discover films from the past that influenced them.

Through these modern filmmakers I became interested in The French New Wave and Film Noir, and watched movies from Truffaut and Godard to Wilder and Welles.

I love how early Film Noir influenced the French New Wave and crime films were given a new life through the lens of a new generation of filmmakers thousands of miles away. The French New Wave is clearly referenced in films like "Mean Streets," "Bottle Rocket" and especially in "Pulp Fiction."

With HIT THE HITMAN I want to follow in this cinematic lineage but put my own personal 21st century spin on it.

IAN MATTINGLY:

Born and raised in Baltimore, MD, IAN MATTINGLY has been a fan of comic books, graffiti, kung fu movies and ice cream for as long as he can remember. With a life long love for drawing he attended highschool at Carver Center for Arts & Technology where he studied photography as well as film and video production. After highschool he moved out west to Los Angeles to study.

Going back and forth from Los Angeles to Baltimore, Ian spent much of his 20's pursuing music as a Hip Hop artist. As technology made it more and more economical to create great looking, filmic video, Ian started to create his own music videos and in the process fell back in love with filmmaking.

Ian is currently back in L.A. and will have a story credit on an upcoming short from his close friend, director Hilton Carter. In 2013 he and his brother, Doug Mattingly released a short film called "Conviction" that played at film festivals in L.A. He's continued to make music videos for himself as well as fellow Hip Hop artists and has a number of personal filmmaking projects in the works.

DOUG MATTINGLY:

DOUG MATTINGLY was raised in a working class suburb of Baltimore, Maryland (USA). Doug received an academic scholarship to attend Calvert Hall College, High School, an all boys Catholic school in Towson, Maryland, where he nurtured his love for sports, music, and the visual arts. But as his high school years wore on, Doug's attention began to focus more and more on music, specifically on the guitar. All the while, however, he made short films as substitutes for term papers and traditional homework assignments to the amusement of his teachers and classmates. Because he didn't want to sing in the Fall musicals, and because the Spring dramas were always put up during baseball season, Doug never auditioned for his school's theatre productions. Still, when the time came for him to choose a college and a major, he was torn between acting and music. Ultimately, the "pragmatic" side of him made him choose music; the thinking being that he could always "make a living with his hands". He received a full academic scholarship to the University of Southern California, which landed him exactly where he wanted to be; in the middle of Los Angeles, California. While studying guitar at USC's Thornton School of Music, Doug also took numerous theatre classes and appeared in several student films. Within a few months of graduation, he was on the road with a rock band for the better part of a year touring the Western U.S., including a four month stint in Hawaii.

Doug then returned to LA where he played in as many as four bands at a time and began to work as a studio guitarist. Within a couple of years, the academic bug bit again, and Doug was back at USC earning his Masters degree in guitar performance. This time he studied privately with Jazz guitar legend Joe Diorio. Over the next couple years Doug would be courted by managers, casting directors, talent agents, and even a few studio executives who tried to woo him in front of the camera, but as he was fully immersed in music, he turned them down. Eventually, however, he signed with modeling and commercial agents in New York and a move "back East" was imminent.

The next several years found Doug releasing three full length solo singer/songwriter rock style recordings on his own independent label where he wrote, produced, and performed all compositions. (for more details, see Doug's music website bio at dougmattingly.net) His sophomore release "Building A Monastery" was voted "Best Local Album 2006" in Baltimore's Citypaper. He also made his way back into acting as he took up studies at Washington, DC's famed Shakespeare Theatre, while also teaching courses himself in music at a Baltimore area college. He simultaneously began accepting roles in DC's thriving professional theater scene performing everything from Mamet to Shakespeare while appearing in several independent short films. Ultimately, Doug would return to Los Angeles to pick up where he had left off and has since worked in theatre, commercials, promos, and several independent feature length and short films. He has also turned his attention to writing, directing, sound design, and editing with the production of his independent short "Conviction". As for music, Doug continues to compose, write songs, work as a guitarist and singer, and teach.

Risks and challenges

There are any number of things that can go wrong when shooting a film. A location can fall through. An actor can get sick. Equipment can break. We are confident however, that we can turn around a great short film despite all of the hurdles we may face when trying to finish it.
