Luxury automobile manufacturers have spent decades perfecting miniaturized heating and air conditioning systems mounted inside car seats that provide indulgent comfort when driving. Yet when it comes to our beds, where we spend 30% of our lives, there is an abysmal lack of technological innovation dedicated to being perfectly warm or cool when under the sheets. It's always the same old electric blanket, same old space heater, same old room air conditioner or room fan.
The BEDJET was developed in 2013 to bring the most advanced technology available to actively heat and cool the part of the bedroom that matters the most when you are there: your space between the sheets.
The BEDJET sits next to or under the foot of your bed and sends forced hot air or refreshing room air in between your top and bottom sheets via a small unobtrusive duct anchored at the bottom corner of the bed.
The bedside wireless remote control or optional smartphone app activates the heat or cool function. Once activated, the patent pending and precisely tuned blower, ducting system and outlet nozzle operate at a very specific air pressure to create a scientifically magical event in your bedding. The BEDJET quietly generates a small cushion of turbulent air between the upper and lower bedsheets that lifts the top bedding off the bed by a few inches. This tenting effect on the bedding combined with the turbulent air flow enables BEDJET air to permeate throughout the entire sleeping area and provide even heating or cooling. Set the auto shutoff timer or blower speed for your comfort level. It's a delight to be under while running.
For heating, activate the BEDJET three to five minutes before getting into bed to achieve a 30 degrees F bedding pre-heat, or use it for short bursts while already in bed. Phone App & Smart Home Integration
The BEDJET comes standard with a RF wireless remote. Our fully functional 3rd generation prototype also has a wifi control board and smartphone app, allowing you to use your phone as the remote. The wifi works but we haven't yet integrated the feature at a cost we are happy with. If we can reach our stretch goals we will unlock the wifi (and kicking around bluetooth) as an upgrade option board for the BEDJET. The wifi controller and app will be open sourced, allowing developers to come up with all sorts of interesting ways to control the BEDJET from other smarthome or home automation technologies.
Can't I do this with an Electric Blanket?
Electric blankets can't cool you off. But lets take a look at how well they can keep you warm: try Good Houskeeping's Research Institute reviews on the best electric blankets here. According to GH, some electric blankets take as long as one hour to raise the temperature of the bed by 20 degrees F. The BEDJET raises the bedding temperature of a king sized bed by 30 degrees F in just minutes, operating at 10-15x the speed of any known electric blanket or electric mattress pad technology on the market. This enables a quick bed pre-heat just minutes before you get into bed.
The Electric Blanket Institute tells us the the average electric blanket puts out less than 200 watts of heating power, and some portion of this energy is emitted to the top side of the blanket into the bedroom. The BEDJET provides 1500 watts of safe, dry heating power, nearly 100% of which goes straight into your bedding. The temperature of the hot air from the BEDJET is safe, at approximately the same temperature as your household HVAC central air heating register.
Many electric blankets aren't reliable after repeated washings or have very special washing and drying instructions that must not be violated. The BEDJET works with your existing bedding and sheets, you can wash them any time you like.
Electric blankets have embedded wires which you can feel and these wires can be chewed on by pets or damaged by children and sharp objects. Take a look at the IR camera image of a brand new blanket purchased from a major department store after 45 minutes on "hi" setting. The wires do not provide even heating as shown by the IR camera compared to the BEDJET's IR heating profile above. Older electric blankets cause hundreds of fires a year in the U.S from electrical wires in the bed just like this.
Finally, we at BEDJET are not enthusiastic about having live electricity in the bed of any kind, or sleeping all night bathed in electromagnetic fields from electrical wires just millimeters from our bodies. With the BEDJET, all the electricity is kept well outside the bed where it belongs, in the safe and secure BEDJET housing.
Electric blankets were once the best and most efficient products available for warming of your bed. With the release of the BEDJET, we believe you now have a better technology option. The Development Process History
We are sending the BEDJET out on Kickstarter for pledges at way lower than the $399 first year's retail pricing in order to reward and thank our early adopters and help build brand awareness. If you are pledging to receive a BEDJET, you will get the following:

If you grew up like us in cold northern winters and with families that were frugal with the evening thermostat, then we made this project for you. The BEDJET concept was born over ten years ago, when I placed an electric fan heater into my bed and threw a blanket over it to see what would happen. I was fortunate that the apartment did not burn down, but I was intrigued at how hot and toasty the bed became.
The BEDJET graduated from idea to a true product when I had an elderly parent come home from surgery for two weeks of bed rest in an extremely drafty bedroom in her hundred year old home. After days of fuddling with electric heating pads, blankets and space heaters, I thought.... there has got to be a better way than this. l searched and quickly realized there was simply a staggering lack of applied science and real technological innovation for staying comfortable during the 30% of our lives that we spend in bed.
And that's when I realized...... I can do this. I've worked on heating and cooling elements of the space suit for NASA in my prior engineering jobs, as well as heating and cooling technologies for whole buildings -- and a bed is a way simpler ecosystem to work with. After building the first prototype unit I had a few people try it out. And then more. We put together formal user groups and everybody fell in love with the BEDJET and wanted one. A team was formed and we decided to bring the product to market.
We've spent nearly $65,000 so far in developing the BEDJET to a 3rd generation pre-production model that is fully operational. This was our own money, not investors. We need your help to complete the project and bring it into production. The following are the outside 3rd party expenses we have ahead of us:

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
The product exists today with all heating and cooling features operating. It has gone through user group testing and received rave reviews on its functionality. All the fundamental technologies in the BEDJET are fully proven, the only task left is to transition the development level components into production and pursue an Underwriters Laboratories listing as an electrical appliance. If we achieve our target on Kickstarter, we have enough of our own additional funds to add in to bring the unit all the way to production.
Our project team has several engineers who are highly experienced at new product introduction with products far more complex than the BEDJET (over 60 years combined industry experience). At this point the only risk to the project is late delivery from our target.
We took dB measurements with a sound meter with the BEDJET hooked up to the bottom of the bed as shown in the videos. The dB measurements were taken from the top of the bed near the pillow.
We measured 45 dB with the unit on the lowest setting and 49dB with the unit on high. This was in cooling mode, which can be run all night (heating mode is only run for a few minutes at a time). Our team was really pleased with these numbers -- this is quieter than a room fan set on high. Getting to a super quiet unit was a big part of our development and we're really happy the numbers here came out right were we were targeting.
