The math challenge, a way to help kids learn.
We play tested many images and found, by a big margin, a zombie picture was the most exciting for kids. We developed the 53 math problems (all addition and subtraction) around the theme of helping the police curtail a zombie outbreak. Kids read the problem on each card, and then solve the math to help in the investigation. The answer leads to the next card to put in the jig.
Out of the math challenge evolved the alternative puzzles, including the educational Natural Elements, hoping they might bring families and friends together, away from computers and TVs . . . providing an entertaining and educational alternative to electronic content. This puzzle is perfect for family nights and parties. Often in play testing we see people come and go from the table in an unrehearsed rotation. They help solve a few cards (there's 54) and then take a break to let someone else contribute. There's a nice community feeling of working together toward a shared goal.
