SEAS WITHOUT A SHORE is a magical, mysterious photography book of tintypes, portraits, still lifes and seascapes.

ABOUT THIS PROJECT

Seas without a Shore is a new collection of photographs that I’ve been working on for the past 18 months and am now turning into a book.

The book will be 9.5” x 12” in size and run about 150 pages with over 90 photographs. There will be a standard edition cover and also a limited edition cloth bound version. 80 cloth bound books will come with a slipcase and 20 of them will be delivered in a deluxe clamshell box. The books will be printed and bound with superb, thick paper and the highest offset print quality. The book is designed and ready to go off to the printers!

This series of photographs consists mostly of wet plate collodion (or tintype) images which is a beautiful photographic process that was invented in the mid 19th century and still to this day has passionate practitioners using this method all round the world. It’s a wonderful antidote to all things digital within photography today and an alternative for those wanting to work photo-chemically and who are increasingly being deprived of film stocks to use. (Kodak RIP).

I’ve tried to avoid working with a very rigid theme or set of guidelines on this series and have wanted to take pictures of things, people and characters that mean a lot to me personally through themes of solitude, hope and survival. Making the masks, and many of the props and costumes is a big part of the process and it helps me define this unique and demented little world I live and shoot in. There are many still lifes (or portraits rather) of Seahorses, which I find to be one of the most beautiful and fascinating creatures in existence. The mysteries of the sea is certainly a big part of the subject matter in these pictures and I like to think that the book ends with a sort of crescendo of color images of survivors braving waves and currents, perhaps the result of a future world where ocean tides will wash away the planet’s coastlines.

The rewards are described more in detail on this page.

REWARDS

Described below are most of the rewards. Besides the book itself, there are prints in different sizes, there is one image offered as a Platinum Print and then there are five unique tintypes, which accompany five of the box sets. As there are various options and combinations, please take the time to read through the descriptions and follow the links below to see the images with titles, sizes etc. Please e-mail me at chris@chris-anthony.com with any questions.

Unique Tintypes

The five tintypes accompanying the limited edition book/clamshell box will not be scanned for further printing. They will remain truly unique, one-of-a-kind photographs. Each tintype is 3.5"x4.5" in size. They will be signed on the back, and come with an archival matte and sleeved for protection. There are 14 tintypes to choose from, so the first people to order these rewards will get their pick of these unique tintypes. Please contact me to discuss your preferred tintype. Follow this link my site to see larger versions of the tintypes:

The Platinum Print

Perhaps the godfather of all photographic prints, invented in 1873 by William Willis, the platinum has a beautiful sense of depth and richness and will last as long as the paper they are printed on. The process produces photographs of unrivaled beauty made by photographers and favored by collectors because of their tonal range, the surface quality and their permanence. A platinum print provides a broad scale of tones from black to white. The platinum tones range from warm black, to reddish brown, to expanded mid-tone grays that are unobtainable in silver prints.

About Me

I’ve been lucky enough to have taken pictures for most of my life. I started as a teenager, shooting rock bands but I changed direction after film and art history studies that led me to the film industry and even directing various projects. I returned to shooting still pictures about 8 years ago and have had many exhibitions in different cities around the world. I don’t know that I have a particular style but I think the one constant throughout my pictures is the subject matter and characters I choose to depict.
