Simpler, Better Braking For Bicycles
You may know how to drive a car and ride a bicycle. By now it feels like a natural ability, second nature, but you started out needing to learn both of these skills.
To drive safely, you needed a sense of your surroundings and car’s size and shape. You also needed to learn the sensitivity of the gas and brake pedals.
You may remember that basic bicycle riding involved a little bit more skill. Learning to ride a bicycle meant getting up on two wheels and balancing as you apply your body’s power to gracefully propel yourself while:

When you needed to quickly apply the brakes to slow, turn or come to a stop and put your foot down or get off the seat, you could do so with ease and control.
In a car, you are sitting comfortably supported by four wheels. You learn how to start the engine, shift into gear, apply the gas and apply the brakes all with single controls:
Gear shift, gas pedal, brake pedal.
So what if something could be added to the bicycle braking system on a regular bicycle with front and rear hand brakes that would convert it into a single control system offering all capabilities with a single action (like a car with one pedal for four brakes)?
The Brake Director is a unique, patented single-lever braking system component which gives one hand all of the stopping power and control of two. The Brake Director transforms any two-brake system into an equally effective one lever braking system. Presently the usual approaches for one-hand brake use include:
1. Using only one brake, which is a compromise, making braking less effective.
2. A two-cable pulling lever, which creates a similar result because the cable force is absorbed by the tightest brake. If the setting is precise for equal application, the force to each brake is half the force using two-levers (50/50).
The Brake Director solves these problems by doubling the force from a single-lever (100 x 2= 200) and supplying all of it split 100/100 with no loss to the two brakes.
The Brake Director is composed of:
- 1. A Single cable input from the hand-lever (or other source).
- 2. A cam and follower mechanism, with differential, which doubles input force and outputs to 2 cables.
- 3. Two cable outputs routable to any cable-operated brakes.
a cable inline component. What if only one hand is available to operate the brakes, such as when hand signaling, holding something or a disability? The Brake Director solves this problem.
This is a closeup of The Brake Director in operation. The Cam is moving the brake pads to the rim at an output ratio of one to one, then with the brake pads in contact with the wheel, the wheels are synchronized and, the power output is ramped to a 2 to 1 ratio.
Looking carefully at the brakes on both wheels, you can see both front and back brakes applying at the exact same time. This synchronizes the wheel speed and applies the doubling power of the Brake Director.
This is from our Installation Video. As you ride, the wheels will respond appropriately to a wide range of brake lever force - from gentle to hard. An Emergency Stop will bring you to secure stop in a very short distance.
The Brake Director works well with other Special Needs Adaptive Technology including Disabilities. In case of someone needing a single control such as:
- 1. A Disability resulting in one usable hand.
- 2. The Sport of Bike Polo, where one hand holds the mallet and the brakes are used by the other.
- 3. Simplifying brake use for greater overall bicycle handling while allowing one of the hands to occupied with shifting, hand signaling, water bottle, etc.
The Brake Director is an excellent solution for these needs. This has been proven in the field by the small number of hand-made production units currently in use, representing many types of bicycle:
Recreation, Commuter, Racing Tandem, Cargo Bikes, Adult Tricycles, etc

Where We Are Right Now
We have a current patent on the Brake Director and are producing units in small hand-built quantities and distributing it ourselves. We have an active web site. We take orders by phone and e-mail and directly support the installation. We install the unit when possible or supply complete instruction manual and installation video. Direct phone or e-mail contact support is included to insure the proper result.
We are “Made in America.”
We contract a small machine shop to cut blank parts which are finished and assembled by hand in house using locally sourced off the shelf bearing, shafts, bushings and assorted nut and bolts.
Research and Development is ongoing, and we currently sell Version 3.0, which installs very easily as well as being smaller and lighter in weight than previous versions.
Where The Funding Will Go
In the current mode of small quality production we are capable of, we rely principally on web searches, word of mouth, limited advertising and simply discovered by individuals who need this solution.
We have chosen a new domestic manufacturer who can fully produce the finished Unit. This manufacturer gives us the capacity to offer a finished high quality Unit to serve wholesale and retail distribution.
Using a manufacturer to produce our product requires production design, setup, tooling, and minimum order quantity. Costs for this process are estimated at above $10,000 for the first production run of 100 units.
We believe that Brake Director has the potential to grow and succeed in a wider market. This is our goal.

The Vibe is a fully-equipped durable street bike for recreation or commuting and will come with an installed Brake Director as a Reward.
The Vibe incorporates 'dual model' power control, i.e. the instant choice between 'twist your wrist' throttle and 'pedal activation' (of the rotation sensing design).
The Vibe allows a unique choice of batteries as the custom rear rack accommodates one or two quick-release batteries:

The red low step-thru frame model fits riders from about 5'. The gray slope frame model fits riders from about 5'5". Both provide a comfortable upright, cushioned ride with optimally adjustable high rise handle bar. Ride to see and be seen. Glide along on a comfort seat with suspension post, suspension front fork and wide 26" x 2.00" tires. 7-speed derailleur shifter.
The DX model uniquely comes with two 9 Ah Lithium-Ion Polymer batteries, for a total of 18 Ah, providing unsurpassed range (miles per charge). A battery pack is integrated in each side of the custom rear rack allowing for the most convenient quick-release removal and so the Twist's wheel-base does not exceed that of standard bicycle.
The superbly integrated Twist provides exceptional riding comfort, handles crisply on its 700x38C tires and pedals with ease also in power off mode.
The infinitely adjustable (forward/back as well as up/down) handle bar stem assures your individually adjustable riding position on a continuum from bolt upright to flat racing position.
Descends steep hills with agility and brakes with authority.
The Twist is unobtrusively strong on hills with seemingly power beyond its nominal Wattage. Motor assist to 15 mphThe Shimano Nexus 8-speed internal hub shifts ever so smoothly whether at stand still or under way.
Comes with front fork and seat post suspension, comfort saddle, enclosed chain guard, rear rack with dual pannier set, fenders and front & rear lights.
Weighs 53 lb plus the two quick release, lockable 5.5 lb batteries.
Available in Slope (Men's) frames (regular and large, in Metallic Grey (dark shade) with Red striping. Regular and Large frame sizes. (No step-thru or ladies' models).
The Twist DX comes with a state of the art drive system developed in cooperation with by Sanyo-Panasonic, uniquely incorporates two 9 Ah Li-Ion batteries = 18 Ah total delivering around 50 miles of range, quality bicycle components, and provides a ride ever so adjustable, smooth and comfortable.
