Critical Praise for The Gathering:
Wired.com: "....The styles of the stories vary widely and so do the concepts, from very realistic settings to superheroes but they compliment each other despite such diverse work..."
Aint it Cool News: "...Though the only tying theme of this anthology book is a love for the comics medium, this book does have a lot going for it...There's a strong independent voice coming from this one. Here's hoping there's enough support for more issues of THE GATHERING."
Gail Simone (Writer of Secret Six and Birds of Prey): "There's real potential throughout the book and I wouldn't be at all surprised if some of these people end up doing a lot more comics. I hope they do....LOTS of these pieces would not be out of line in a pro book amongst veteran creators."
Girl Read Comics: "The second Gathering Horror issue is great. I was going to start with something descriptive or flowery, but I thought simple was best. The book is great..."
The Rotting Zombie: "...There is just so much variety and so much skill at using only a few pages to create something truly memorable..."
Team Hellions: "...As with every anthology some tales are better than others but not a single one is bad. Only good to great within these pages...I can't wait to read the next themes in future volumes to see what these creators do with other concepts. The thought of such great potential keeps me up nights in anticipation."
Weekly Comic Book Review: "Anthologies can be tough to review...Ultimately, the question you may have to ask is: do the best pieces make up for the worst. Thankfully, you don’t have to ask this question today (or at least, I don’t), as the newest volume of The Gathering delivers an overall solid effort from all its contributions..."
About GrayHaven Comics and The Gathering
The Gathering is an ongoing self published anthology that allows writers and artists new to the comic book field an opportunity to have their work published, often for the first time. Each issue of The Gathering focuses on a specific theme. The first issue was Hope and subsequent issues covered Despair, Heroes, Horror, Romance, Myth and Science Fiction. Future themes will include Fairy Tales, All Women, Western, Ghost Stories and Crime.
In late 2011 we began publishing our first mini-series, Ever After and this year will see two one shots debut: My Geek Family and Sparks.
Beginning in late 2012/early 2013 GrayHaven Comics is adding two more ongoings. Joining The Gathering anthology will be Tales from the Abyss (our horror ongoing) and Hey Kids (our young reader series). We will also be publishing The Bid oneshot, featuring a character made popular by Vol.2 and the webseries Super Annuated Adventurer on our site, as well as a series of one shots titled: Tomorrow. Moving forward we want to publish more self contained one shots and single issues and eventually even original graphic novels. Our first graphic novel, an adaptation of the novel Run Like Hell will see print at the end of 2012.
While the primary focus of the books published by GrayHaven is to give new creators a chance to get published we've had some help from professional talent. Pro comic creators such as Gail Simone, Brent Peeples, Sterling Gates, Glenn Greenberg, Len Wallace and Mike Lapinski have all lent their time and talent to stories with many returning for future volumes in addition to Sean McKeever, Josh Fialkov and others
Over 150 different creators have contributed or are in the process of contributing stories for The Gathering and we're hoping to continue publishing (and offer more opportunites) well beyond 2012. Successful financing of previous Kickstarts allowed us to experiment with different formats in the future including continuing story arcs and self contained issues as well as offering many more up and coming creators an opportunity to have their work featured in future editions and we want to continue with an even more aggressive publishing schedule in the future.
If we reach goal, the money received will go to help offset printing costs to publish the book more frequently and the creation of promotional materials.
Any funds raised in excess of our goal will go to things like website revamps, marketing and promotional costs such as comps for reviewers and publishers, and a larger booth/table presence at convention appearances as well as advertising.
