What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Proof of Concept

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

Appearance Prototype

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

Design Prototype

Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

Production Prototype

Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

About

The patent-pending Canine Ice Vest works to cool your dog three ways. First the pockets are filled with ice, which is separated from your dog’s coat by a layer of hex mesh, resulting in an immediate reduction in core temperature. Next, as the ice slowly melts, cold water drips down the dog’s body, further cooling the entire torso. As the ice melts, the weight load on your dog gradually disappears as well. Finally, the open mesh allows air to circulate under the vest, which lowers your dog’s temperature through evaporative cooling.

S = 20-45 lbs.

M = 45-65 lbs.

L = 65-115 lbs.

Risks and challenges

We've been working on this project for a few years now, field testing different prototypes through all kinds of warm-weather activities. Once we were convinced that the Canine Ice Vest performed as we intended, we worked with a textile professional to refine the design and create a working prototype and patterns that were ready for manufacturing.

We sold out of our initial small batch manufacturing run in the summer of 2016. Fortunately, we were able to connect with a new manufacturer this year that can produce the Canine Ice Vest in larger quantities. So after another round of product refinements and now we're ready to go!

With your support, we'll be manufacturing a larger quantity, potentially hiring staff and purchasing advertising to get the word out.
