Melbournians know the frustration of dressing for a sunny day, only to be drenched by a thunderstorm half an hour later. We sweat our asses off because, like flicking a switch, the morning drizzle is now a heatwave. The unpredictable ‘Bloody Melbourne Weather’ has been eternally impossible to dress for, even in 'Australia's Fashion Capital'.
The Melbourne Jacket will make you Melbourne Weatherproof. Packed with plenty of weather fighting features, it has the ability to adapt with changing conditions, transforming into a singlet when it gets hot, or into something that resembles an emergency service storm suit when a monsoon hits the city.
The Melbourne Jacket is a concept jacket (like one of those futuristic BMW cars) that aims to solve the predicament everyone from Melbourne finds themselves in, without compromising on style. The focus of this campaign is to fund the development, testing and production of this one-of-a-kind super-garmet. Editions of The Melbourne Jacket will be available after this production stage and will only be available to the individuals, companies or organisation who backed this Kickstarter campaign.
Getting an insiders look into the making of this project will be very exciting and once created, this garment will quite possibly be 'the most Melbourne thing ever'. Help make it a reality.
Leave your house knowing all your bases are covered. Whatever the weather throws your way at the drop of a hat, The Melbourne Jacket is packed with features to combat it.
Let's take a "deconstructed latte"-type look at them.
At first glance, the jacket will appear like regular urban wear. But intelligently incorporated into it’s design, are many innovative features that will make the wearer completely Melbourne Weatherproof.
It was raining this morning, but now the mercury has risen to 30 degrees. Fold the jacket into the smart pouch on the back, and the jacket becomes a singlet.
Protect ya neck, ears, and face from the blaring sun. Attaching a legionnaires hat to a singlet must be world-first. Ideas. Boom.
Stored conveniently in zip pockets on the back of the jacket, the drop down thongs are attached to the jacket by cables and can be easily deployed when the afternoon heatwave have filled the Docs with sweat.
When you are wait'in for a mate, and it's 10 degrees but the wind-chill makes it feel like 3. The ski mask unfolds from the collar warm your stinging cheeks.
Concealed conveniently in the jackets sleeves, the gloves will protect you when frostbite kicks in. They also come in handy when they make your extra hot, strong, decaf almond 3/4 Cappuccino, with no chocolate, a little bit too hot to handle.
Bringing a sense of ease to a complicated system, the hands-free holder for your MYKI will have you touching off like Darth Vader. Simple.
Living in pollen fear? Protect your lungs from asthma thunderstorms, with a respirator stored within the jackets lining.
Stored in a small pouch in the jackets rear, the poncho deploys in seconds to protect you from being drowned by a morning drencher. Think of it like your very own Colonial/TelstraDome/Etihad stadium roof.
A mini dog raincoat is on hand for your pooch to stop the inevitable wet dog smell that comes with having a dog caught in the rain.
Rain isn't the only airborne liquid Melbournians have to dodge. The Big Bib protects to you from the hot sauce dripping while your scoffing that trendy food truck taco you read about in Broadsheet. #foodbaby
A rechargeable battery powered heating element will warm you up in no time. Imagine wearing an electric blanket to work or while waiting for your crush under the clocks at Flinders.
Protect your legs and feet from exposure to rain. Rolling down from the jackets lining, rain chaps offer full leg and shoe protection from moisture.
Especially when it’s coming down from crazy angles. Lets face it, our rain falls in ways that would make old mate Pythagoras think it's a stitch-up.
All of the weather fighting features will be stored away in an intelligent pocket system. These pockets will be designed to keep the jacket as slimline as possible, in order to avoid bulking.
When brands like Gucci or Nike launches a new season or product, it’s not just about the item itself. They make a high-end campaign to show the product off. Often involving a celebrity designer to collaborate with, like Kanye and his shoes. They get top directors to make a slick film, again with celebrity endorsement. The Melbourne Jacket deserves exactly the same.
This Kickstarter is not solely aimed for the creation of the jacket itself, it's also about making an engaging film and a high-end photoshoot to show the jacket off in the best light.
Melbourne is full of creative talent. Who knows? We could ask designers P.A.M or Romance was Born, to help make The Melbourne Jacket. Could Guy, Cate, Eric or Dame Edna to spruik its incredible features in a film. Megan Gale or Steph Claire Smith could model the Jacket in a photoshoot. Flume could be good for the theme tune. or Tash Sultana. Paul Kelly could pen the words? He has written all our other anthems anyway. Who would you like to be involved?
This is the dream. The reality will all depend on Melbourians helping out with the funding pledged to this Kickstarter page. Get around it.
The Melbourne Jacket is an idea. Bringing it into reality requires collaboration with talented individuals.
This Kickstarter's main goal is to raise the funding needed to hire the best creative talent Melbourne has to offer, in order to bring the jacket and its supporting campaign to life, and to create something truly memorable for the people of Melbourne. With the right team, the possibilities of this project are limitless.

The Melbourne Jacket idea, came to Aaron after getting drenched while exiting the 96 tram one day. When he got on; complete sunshine. When he got off; torrential rain and gale force winds. Walking home drenched in a t-shirt and thongs, he thought something had to be done.
The Melbourne Jacket is Aaron’s second major work after ‘STRAYA CASH’, which sparked a national debate over who should be on Australia’s banknotes.
As well as making art, Aaron works as an Art Director in the advertising industry. He is passionate about ideas and creativity, and specialises in bringing unique and quirky concepts into reality.
He learnt the basics of the clothing manufacturing process while interning at Melbourne fashion label 'MaterialByProduct' during his Uni days. He built upon this knowledge when he started his own experimental t-shirt label around the same time. His designs were stocked in five Melbourne stores, including the Pallister sister's Tiger Mist boutique.
Aaron will bring his knowledge in creativity, advertising, and fashion together, to work tightly with the project collaborators to make The Melbourne Jacket a reality.
Risks and challenges
I’ve tried my best to include of the most suitable features to defend against our crazy Melbourne weather.
If, during any stage of this crowdfunding campaign, a Melbourne person, organisation or company, who backs this idea, comes up with a ‘must have’ feature that isn't currently included in the Melbourne Jacket’s proposed design, I will do my best to include it or swap out another feature to make it happen.
After all, we are trying to make this thing 'the most Melbourne thing ever'.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
