Once upon a time, it was a dark november morning in a meeting-room, i spilled coffee on a piece of paper. The blot looked like a monster. A really angry "i don't want to work now"-style monster.
I saw the opportunity and let it dry. Then i drew around the edges to make it more clear. With a pencil i worked out all the little details that made it a sweet, yet cool, monster. The first coffeemonster.
Coffeemonster no. 1 was born and since i used instagram for a few month, i uploaded it to my stream. Since then i spill coffee on purpose every other day and draw a monster finishing it up with a little story to it (examples to be found later on).
From there it went on and on and on. I made 500+ coffeemonsters from 2011 until now. And i keep going.
Also there have been exhibitions ans trips to far places. First i managed to share the coffeemonsters in an exhibition in an old cinema in Krefeld. Four other exhibitions followed, accompanied by showing my work at five creative conferences in Düsseldorf, Berlin and Brighton.
And then magic happened: The monster went everywhere on the internet because of an article on boredpanda.com. The monsters gained followers all over the world very fast and i still cannot believe where it took them.
Just to name a few places: a South African morning tv-show, a Bangladesh newspaper, a coffee magazine from Belgium and many more.
So here we go for the next big leap into the coffeemonsters history:
Books are plain awesome. You can smell them, feel them, see them and hear them when your mum reads the good night story to you. You may even taste them, if you love to eat paper. To make it absolutely clear here: I'm talking about an awesome book made from great paper, fineart quality printing and sweet distinctive layout featuring some of the alltime-favorite coffeemonsters.
• est. 200 pages
• 100 coffeemonsters
• 100 coffeemonster-stories (the ones i wrote for every monster)
• 20 never seen before coffeemonsters (not on IG, not on FB, not on SC)
• 4 or more monsters that will be detachable to share with your friends
• fineart printing
• thick, open artist paper
Some perks, not final design, but it wil look something like that or even better. I will add more of them throughout the campaign.
the mug (mood design):
I am a creative professional from Germany. From 2005-2010 i studied communication design at the University of applied Sience Niederrhein and finished with a diploma thesis about music videos for local-bands and their effect on a bands success.
Also being educated in layout, copywriting, design and drawing since preschool, i am currently working as a copywriter in an creative agency.
I mostly love creating things, and especially coffeemonsters, because it makes people like you and me happy. And this book should be the happiest thing i've ever done with design.
Since i publish the coffeemonsters online, it seems obvious that they are actually everywhere, but when it comes to visited places, i want to show you a few milestones here, just so you can see that this is a real thing, made with coffee, paper and pen:
You see, the monsters came around a little. I hope you enjoyed the project so far. Now here comes how everything will be made...
I am currently supported by a professional, yet small publisher called "Gudberg Nerger" based in Hamburg, Germany. They are capable of producing coffee-table-books like "The Coffeemonsters Book" and i know they are on fire for the project. They publish artsy projects all the time, but there is always one big issue: financing the production.
So here you come into play, monsterlovers. Let's do it!
Production cost breakdown:
Also the financing is calculated without any obscurities.
We need 10.000 € that split in an estimated:
8-10% Kickstarter & credit card fees
65% Printing costs for 2.500 books (first edition)
25-27 % Perks like mugs, prints or even original coffeemonsters
All the time consuming work like layouting, coloring, fine-drawing, lithograpphy, scanning, eg, is simply not included because Jan & Niclas from Gudberg Nerger and i do it in our free time.
Well, now it would be like the most awesome thing ever, if you take a look at the perks and choose one that is just fine for you.
Damn, i made something stupid here. I had to put in shipping costs at the start of the project. I thougth "Well, i don't know, so just put something in that fit's the most expensive item and go. I can change that later, when it's running." Turns out: I can not. Also the shipping costs directly add up to the funding and are not dealt with seperately. Also a fact i didn't know, but well.. here we are now.
So instead of 15,- € for a book to international destinations and 9,- € for a book to germany, my publisher said as follows:
EU & International: 1x book 3,20 € / 2x book 6,00 € / 3x book 12,00 €Germany: 1x book 1,00 € / 2x book 1,65 € / 3x book 4,50 €
That brings me to the conclusion, that i'll put something cool in the box to make up for the high shipping costs.
I am very sorry for that and i hope you can forgive my preoccupied "just fill it in, i'll change it later" mind. I will think of something great for all of you to put in the box. What will be in, i will present later in the campaign.
Even more awesome awaits, if you tell your family, friends and colleagues because if the project finances quickly, i will think about some pretty cool stretch goal-book-features.
11k - some more freshly drawn monsters replace some old ones!
12k - I sign all the first books (counting every backer who backed before the book will be funded)
15k - there will be 8, not 4, detatchable monsters in the back of every book
I have been supported by Fabian Soltwedel who did the video for this project. Huge thanks, mate!
Also Jan from Gudberg Nerger, who always believed in the project and still is involved with the layout of the book and all the pre-production.
I've added all the little stories to the monsters, so you can see what is to be read soon.
Why you may know the monsters:
Risks and challenges
Because Gudberg Nerger made so many art publications and i am really firm in design and layouting a publicaton like this, with the help of Jan and Niclas, i am very confident, fingers crossed, that this project will not fail.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
