Back in 2012, I signed my very first official publishing deal.
It was for a cookbook themed around sweet corn. I was recommended for the project, as word of my husband’s over the top love of corn - and the ridiculous lengths to which I went to entertain that love - got out. I once made an entire day of meals - breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert, and snacks - out of corn, for his birthday.
Not to sound hipster, but I was making fresh corn ice cream before it was a big *thing*!
I’d already self published 2 cookbooks and a few sewing manuals, but this was different - it felt like a proper thing! I worked hard - and had to make a lot of compromises - and about a year later, “Sweet Corn Spectacular” was released.
It wasn’t the name I wanted, the cover image featured a stock photo that we hadn’t taken, I hated the font, my “voice” had been stripped from most of it... and it was all in black and white, with very few photos. I understand why they did it - it was part of a series, and a matter of branding. Though I wasn’t really happy with the finished product, I was a traditionally published author!
In the end, things didn’t go the way either side had expected it to, and the publisher and I parted ways. In 2017, the rights to “Sweet Corn Spectacular” were reverted to me at my request.
Now, it’s time to do things the way I wanted to in the first place, and for this fun cookbook to take its rightful place alongside my other cook books - in voice, layout, and design!
I started working on the revamp soon after obtaining the rights, adding more commentary to recipes, updating the recipe directions, and shooting / reshooting photos for the book. As the original book was to feature very little in the way of photography, many of the recipes were never photographed back then!
Maize Craze: Spectacular Sweet Corn Recipes will be full of gorgeous, full colour photography, and feature all of the recipes that Sweet Corn Spectacular did, plus a few new ones.
If you have ever looked at a corn farmer’s market stall and wondered what all you could do with a giant sack of fresh corn, this is the book for you!
It will feature breakfasts, appetizers/side dishes, main dishes, desserts, condiments and beverage recipes, all utilizing fresh sweet corn as a centerpiece. You’d be surprised what all you can do with this versatile grain, and how easy it is to create unique dishes from it!
As with all of my cookbooks, recipes will be easy to make, with simple, straightforward instructions, and measurements will be provided in both US and metric units. This cookbook will include at least 70 recipes, most - if not all - will either be inherently gluten-free, or provide alternate ingredients/instructions to make GF versions. More recipes may be available as stretch goals, though :)
If funded, we are aiming for an official release date in July 2019, with an EARLY shipping date for Kickstarter backers in May 2019. Backers will also be receiving their copies at a discount off the anticipated cover price.
The book will be distributed through Ingram, and will be available through all major online booksellers.

"I bought this cookbook since I don't consider myself a very good baker, particularly with cakes. I decided to push myself to get a little better and use a cookbook with ridiculously yummy flavors to do it. (Boy am I glad I did!) Risks and challenges
As a seasoned recipe developer/author/publisher, most potential risks are things that I've worked out, long ago.
I have a photographer, publisher, and distribution in place already, along with my 14 other titles. This is a well oiled machine, at this point... not to mention that the vast majority of the book is already done!
As far as Kickstarter-specific risks go, this is my sixth project. Of the first 5, 4 successfully funded - 3 were delivered early, and one shipped about a week late. I was SO close to developing gluten-free soft pretzels and bagels, I went over on time. In the end, it was worth it: Both recipes were perfected and included in the book.
The remaining project was well on its way to funding, when I had to cancel it due to circumstances beyond my control.
We did have some shipping problems with the second most recent Kickstarter. USPS chewed up and/or lost several packages, which had not happened to us before. We re-sent rewards to those affected, and ate the cost.
As a result, we have since changed our packaging - now in durable corrugated cardboard mailers - and whole setup for shipping; now all domestic shipments are trackable, with tracking information automatically being sent to recipients. We don’t anticipate any problems this time around.
