Shipping Update, and a New Book Project!

Posted by Marie Porter (Creator)

Hey everyone,

As some of you may have noticed, we ran into some shipping issues this time around.

Although nothing changed about our shipping procedures or packaging from the thousands of books I've mailed over the past several years,  something must have changed with USPS, as a LOT of books ended up chewed up in the mail, or lost altogether.  Some backers ended up receiving completely empty, ripped up mailers, while some of those same mailers were returned empty to me, by the post office.

I did file lost mail inquiries on each of the empty envelopes that I knew of, and - amazingly? - the post office was not able to find a single one of the books they lost.  They were obviously ripped open by USPS equipment... so apparently there are black holes existing within USPS distribution centers. Fun stuff - I lost several hundred dollars to this nonsense.

I resent books in each case that I was made aware of, and - with no new cases coming up in the last few weeks - I'm hoping that's the end of it, and that all of you have your books and are enjoying them!  My sincerest apologies to those who were affected by these issues.  (If any of you have not received your book yet, please message or email me directly!)

While it's too late for this particular kickstarter, I wanted to let you all know that - as a result of these issues - I've completely changed how I ship books.

First of all, I've retired the "tear resistant" envelopes, and have switched over to a much more robust solution: corrugated cardboard mailers.  They're a little more expensive and a bit more work, but so far they've held up beautifully.

Secondly, I switched from my old routine of taking them to the post office and paying for shipping there, to signing up with, and printing the labels online.  With this new setup, everyone gets tracking numbers, and they're automatically emailed to recipients.  Hopefully this will go a long way to preventing lost packages... or at least making them easier to deal with, if it happens.
It's been about a month with the new packaging, and a couple weeks with the online labels/tracking, and so far, so good!

So, onto my new project!

On Monday, I'll be launching a project I've been looking forward to doing for a long time - A Canadian cookbook!

Not just any Canadian cookbook, mind you - it's a Canadian cookbook that could only be done by a Canadian who lives "away."

Necessity may be the mother of invention, but desperation is its father... and any expat Canadian knows that - while there are plenty of recipes out there for butter tarts and tourtiere - there are many foods that we just can't get in other countries.

"More Than Poutine" will have all of my traditional Canadian recipes that all Canadian cookbooks need... but will also have homemade versions of many of the sauces, condiments, snack foods, etc that we were so used to buying, back home.

Not just for Canadian expats, this cookbook will be great for:

- Canadians still in Canada who want homemade foods, avoiding a lot of the additives in retail foods.

- Non-Canadians who want to expand their culinary horizon. Canadian food is about SO much more than poutine!

- Those who are gluten-free.  Any recipe in the book that is not inherently gluten free will include ingredients and instructions for making an appropriate GF version, where possible (most - if not all - of the recipes should be possible)

- Those who love a Canadian, and want to surprise them with yummy goodies... or a book!

2017 is Canada's 150th birthday, so it seemed like the right time to do this!

The Kickstarter will go live first thing next Monday (Jan 16) morning, and I'll send an update at that time, with a link.  I'm really excited about this project, and would love your support... either as backers, by sending the link to friends who would be interested, or both.

That's all for now.  Hope you all had a wonderful - and tasty! - holiday season, and have started the new year out on a good foot!

That's really silly that they would do that. I always thought they put an automatic insurance (up to like $500 or something) on all mail unless you get more.

I'm sorry you had to do this. It sounds like you handled it perfectly from your side.

Mine was one of the chewed up packages and I wanted to praise you on how well you handled it. Once the package was returned to you, you sent me a new one. Had you not told me what happened, I never would have known. In any case, I want to thank you for your hard work and let you know that I'm looking forward to your new projects!

Garrett: Apparently not. The packages weren't insured (I never do for books - have never had a problem, and it adds more expense and fussing!), so they say it's not their problem.

I say I paid for a service, they had my property in their custody and destroyed/lost it.

They gave me forms to fill out for lost mail recovery, I got them all back last week with notices that they didn't find *any* of the lost books.

So, I have a big list of tracking numbers, several packages that were returned to me empty, and will likely take them to small claims. Just planning to wait a couple more weeks in case any more come through!

It's quite odd that that happened to you. Any way you could request reimbursement through their insurance? That way you're not completely out on the money.

Bert and Margaret - I'll resend today.

Anyone else that hasn't received theirs, PLEASE message or email me, rather than comment. It really helps me keep things straight.
