Join Sue Perryman as she watches every episode of Blake's 7 for a blog and ebook project.
In 2011, I convinced my wife to watch every episode of classic Doctor Who from the very beginning. Even the ones that didn't exist any more. The result was a blog called Adventures with the Wife in Space.
Adventures with the Wife and Blake is the sequel to that blog. 52 episodes of Blake's 7 in order. In public. And then collected into an ebook with exclusive extras.
Speed Standard by Sue!
Everyone who backs this project will fund a blog called Adventures with the Wife and Blake. If successfully backed, the blog would commence in January 2014 and it would be completely free to access (even if you don't back it). It would run for approximately six to seven months, with approximately two updates a week, plus one or two audio commentaries, a podcast and a special wrap-up video. Please visit the Wife in Space blog to get a taste of how it would work if you are unfamiliar with my wife's appreciation for 1970s telefantasy/carpentry.
However, if you decide to back us to the tune of £7 or more you will also receive an ebook of the blog once it's all over. If we use The Wife in Space as a guide, this means you will receive an ebook approximately 60-70,000 words in length, not including all the extras.
Ah, yes, the extras. The Wife and Blake ebook will include exclusive content that will not be published on the blog. In fact, these exclusive extras will only be available in the Kickstarter edition of the ebook. This is your one and only chance to pre-order these extras.
These extras will include, but are not limited to, the following:
- new TV episode blogs (see rewards)
- blogs of new series Doctor Who (if people back that reward tier)
- blog posts where Sue forces Neil to watch something
- interviews with Sue, Gary and Nicol
- cake recipes
- graphs, charts, statistics and lists. Lots and lots of lists.
If you want to make Sue watch something specific, you now have the power to do so by choosing one of our rewards (see right). Do you want to know what Sue thinks of I, Claudius or Star Cops? Here's your chance to find out!
Extras currently include (and are subject to change)
- The Avengers: Too Many Christmas Trees
- UFO: Mindbender
- Space 1999: The Rules of Luton
- Lost in Space: The Great Vegetable Rebellion
- Urban Gothic: Necromance
- The Prisoner: Arrival
- The Tomorrow People: A Man for Emily
- Secret Army: first episode
- A Very Peculiar Practice: The Hit List
- The Day of the Triffids (1981): Episodes 1 and 2
- Shortland Street (NZ soap opera): first episode
- Head (1968): yes, technically it's a film, but what the hell.
- Manos - The Hands of Fate: Oh. My. God.
- An episode of Bugs
- An episode of Worzel Gummidge
- An episode of Whodunnit?
- The first episode of Children of the Stones
- Doctor Who: Scream of the Shalka
- Doctor Who: Love & Monsters
Other extras are still to be announced, including at least one episode of New Doctor Who which will be decided in a backer's poll.
So, in summary, for £7 you are effectively pre-ordering an ebook based on a blog you are also helping to fund. With extras. Did I mention the extras?
Why Blake's 7?
Sue has never seen a single episode of Blake's 7 and she knows next to nothing about the programme (see video above). This is a good thing. Furthermore, the series was conceived by Sue's favourite author, Terry Nation, and lots of people who worked on Doctor Who also worked on Blake's 7, so it will be fun to see if she can spot them all. Also, if you've never seen the series before, you still have a few months to get hold of the episodes so you can follow the series with her. Hey, why not get your partner to join you?
What will the money be used for?
The money will be spent on website hosting, the costs of converting the blog into an ebook, the talents of a professional copy-editor to check for errors, cartoons and prints from Royston, and hopefully some trailers from Glen Allen. Once I've accounted for tax and rewards, the rest will allow me to spend several months on this project and still pay something towards the mortgage. It's either that or I get a real job and we put the project on hold for a while (i.e. forever).
Incidentally, if you are new to Kickstarter, no money is taken from your account unless this project is funded and the funding window has closed. Just in case you were waiting for pay day ;-)
Thank you tweets will be sent immediately. If this project is funded, the blog would be published in January 2014 (via www.thewifeandblake.com), as would the YouTube dedication video. Postcards would be sent in January, too. Signed copies of the Wife in Space book would be sent in November 2013, and the Wife and Blake ebook would be delivered electronically in October 2014. All the other rewards (A4 prints etc) would be delivered to you early in 2014.
Many thanks for your support
Neil and Sue xx
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
I convinced my wife to watch Doctor Who in public for two and a half years so Blake's 7 should be a walk in the park! However, if any unforeseen circumstances were to arise we would delay the blog until such time as we could resume it. Whatever happens, we would see it through to the bitter end (see Adventures with the Wife in Space for evidence of our tenacity).
