Pulp & Deckle is transforming an empty space into a community handmade papermaking studio, with your help!
Who are these pulpy people? And where are they?
We've got the space, we've got the passion, now we just need a bit of shine, polish, and equipment. Born out of visual artist, Jennifer J. Woodward's basement in 2011, we've been scouring Portland's diverse neighborhoods in search of the perfect spot to connect with future paper masters. Now that Pulp & Deckle is moving into the C3:Initiative's community projects space, we have an amazing opportunity to share our love of handmade papermaking with our friends and neighbors. The bones of the space are great, but it needs a bit of work before it can be the lively, and efficient studio we envision.
Located in the vibrant & evolving St. Johns neighborhood, the Pulp & Deckle studio will hold workshops for beginners on to experienced paper-makers. We'll offer classes on topics like creating vegetable papyrus, marbling paper, making paper from clothing fibers like bluejeans, painting with paper pulp, creating watermarks in paper, and so much more!
We aim to be as sustainable with the studio as possible, and will focus on recycling as a way to make new papers from junkmail, and worn out cotton clothes. Did you know that paper made with cotton or linen is archival, meaning it won't fall apart when it gets wet? That's why when you put a dollar bill through the wash it comes out just fine. We can't wait to share the possibilities of handmade paper with others in a supportive, educational, and fun environment.
Where is your money going?
Pulp & Deckle studio will give people access to the equipment, space, and supplies that are often only available in colleges or university type settings. By providing greater access we hope to enable people to create amazing things that otherwise would be out of their reach.
Before we can really get the studio going there are some large (literally) pieces of equipment, and supplies that we need. We are in need of an Aardvark 12-Ton Press, a Reina Paper Drying Box, cardboards and blotters for the drying box, Heavyweight polyester felt, moulds of various sizes, vats, aprons, pulp painters, strainers, pots, materials to build raised beds for growing fruits and veggies, varied pulps and fibers, tongs, squeeze bottles, strainers, formation aids and retention agents, 5 gallon buckets, large sheets of plywood, and various tables and shelves.
What happens if we surpass our goal?
The Aardvark press and Reina drying box are the most expensive items we need to get things going. That's why we've created rewards specific to the funding of these pieces of equipment. One item we're not including in the budget for the studio at this time is a 2-lb. Reina Beater. We'd love to have the beater, but due to it's large cost, we decided to leave it off our campaign to keep things as lean and mean as possible. However, if you're a donor that has the ability to fund the purchase of the Reina Beater, we've created a rewards level just for you! Having the beater would definitely kick things up a notch in terms of the professionalism and productivity of the studio, and you would have our undying gratitude if you are able to help us reach beyond our goal and purchase the beater.
What can you get by pledging?
***NEW REWARDS ADDED***
After 6 yrs. of living in Portland, we feel like we can call ourselves adopted Portlanders. If you're a fan of the IFC TV show Portlandia, and you live here, then you know how much of the show rings true! We especially appreciate the characters who "Put a Bird on It." Jenn has actually been putting bird heads on people in her art before we even moved to Portland, so she fits right in here.
In honor of the awesomeness of Portlandia, we've created an exclusive to kickstarter handmade paper print called "Put A Bird On It." Yours for a pledge of $40 or more! (see images below.)
You could put the print in a frame, or you could cut out the characters, glue them onto Popsicle sticks, and make paper dolls out of them. Hurrah for bird people and for Portlandia!
We've added also a special Doctor Who themed seed paper print at the $20 level! See pics. below- GERONIMO!
And to get you even more excited about being involved, we're offering some of the following unique rewards, many of which are exclusive to this Kickstarter campaign.
We are so excited to move into our new studio space and start collaborating with local artists and community members. With your support, Pulp & Deckle is moving from a dream to reality!
Click on the "Back This Project" button on the top right of this page to pledge your support today!
THANK-YOU!!! YOU are TEAM PAPER!!!
Also, a big thank you to our cinematographer Will Lesher-Pierson, and to the 50's era blues guitarist Reverand Gary Davis, for his awesome song- The Sun of Our Life (Reverend Gary Davis) / CC BY-NC-SA 3.0.
We don't get any money. :(
Seriously though, when you make a pledge to a kickstarter project, your money is not taken right away. You are making a pledge to pay the amount if the project is successful and meets its goal by the deadline. If the project does not meet its goal then no money is taken from any of the backer's accounts.
Once the project is successfully funded we will create a survey to get your shipping information and t-shirt size.
In fact, if you're getting any reward that requires shipping info. or other preference (like what kind of animal print you want), we'll get the info. from you via a survey.
