Synesthesia is underway creating an immersive sensory performance, utilizing cutting-edge High Density Light Emitting Diode (LED) technology, producing visually stunning P.O.V. light images with spinning performance props. P.O.V., or Persistence of Vision, exploits a phenomenon in the human eye that creates an afterimage or 'tracer' which lasts for a brief period of time. By moving an array of LEDs quickly in various sequences, we can create a multi-dimensional display of images and intricate designs that unfold right in front of you as we dance.
Our stories are many but they are all told in the same language: theater, the language of circus arts and aerial acrobatics, body movement and how our senses relate to each other in the physical world while seen through a metaphysical lens.
The Synesthesia Project thus is creating multiple LED performance props which will be synchronized to music from a remote server, allowing each of the props to interact with one another to create an extra dimension of visual delight. These props are nonstandard and are custom made. Imagine a pulse of light flowing down a set of fan blades, extending to curved s-shaped staff forms (buugeng) and flowing into the heads of poi, spiraling upwards to a lofty aerial light show.
For our initial production, we will be featuring Persistence of Vision dance tech fans, s-staves (buugeng), poi, and straight staves together to create a harmonic experience, along with an LED-lit aerial hoop cerceaux Lyra (where applicable).
The technology to control and synchronize this show comes at significant cost to develop. Our team has sourced individual components from all over the world to create a robust performance platform that is modular for future expansion with other conceptual props for future shows. Additionally, we intend to incorporate UV, atmosphere reactive and LED costuming, set pieces and static event decor, as budget allows.
Putting this show together has already been no small investment, and we are seeking performance opportunities and other financial avenues to build our show capabilities.
Initial Show Investment
- Lights = $1,500
- Microcontrollers and lithium ion batteries for LED technology = $800
- Time synchronization control = $120
- Materials and machining = $400
- Software, performance controls, innovative visual design, costumes, choreography and storylines all coming together to produce for mind-blowing entertainment... Priceless
The Synesthesia LED show is no small undertaking, and we would like to your support. Our show has the ability to integrate thematic images of many kinds as well as event-specific visuals, logos, brand or event
names, performer names, patterns etc. We do all of this to create a one-of-a-kind
performance that will leave any audience in awe!
In our show, our cast and crew are all sensory storytellers who experience and induce synesthesia, opening your cognitive pathways and routing them through movement, floor, aerial and prop dance, images, scrolling text, evoking touch and scent and feelings. You can expect vignettes depicting things like the growth from a seed and the blossoming of life, how green feels and smells, how 3 can be orange and blue and triangular and us the root of magic, how 4 replicates and gives birth to trees, etc.
We are telling stories of change, growth and metamorphosis.
This is an entirely homegrown project that is admittedly quite ambitious. Between the lights, circuitry, mechanical components, prop material, batteries and wire, this show is adding up very quickly and we simply can't afford to bring this idea to life in our own.
We began production in March and already have spent $1,000 and clocked almost 200 man hours designing, programming, soldering and choreographing. We need at LEAST $1,000 to cover the base amount of materials to get this show on the road.
If we exceed our funding goals, we will be able to build additional props that we had to cut out because of cost and make our show larger. Depending on how well this does, we may even be able to afford some infrastructure to help our show (portable staging and aerial rigging setup would be great!).We don't have a ton of expendable income so financing this dream to become a reality might take the help of those who know the power of our innovation and enjoy being the patrons of art.
Risks and challenges
This project is visionary and therefore has its own series of associated challenges and risks. We are using technologies in ways that have never been explored, with new materials and complex programming. We are fortunate to have a group of uniquely multi-talented people working on Synesthesia who have the background, education, past experience and technical know-how to approach and tackle any challenge that may arise.
