About

Dent:  From The Crypt is a 2D Realtime Roguelike dungeon crawler with multiplayer aspects.  Dent will available for WIndows, Linux and Mac.  You play as Dent.  A mysterious wizard who wakes up to find himself alone in a Cell.  Your mission is to escape!

As you progress through the level you will find gear and enchantments that will help you on your way,  The multiplayer twist comes in at the end of each level - instead of fighting a normal end of level boss like you would in most dungeon crawlers, you will face ANOTHER PLAYER who has also just completed the level you are on.  The winner will take the spoils and proceed on, the loser will DIE and have to start again!

At the end of each level you will be pitted against players who have also just finished that level.  Sometimes there will be no one currently at the end of that level, work around's for this have been implemented as stated below.

-  Search if any players on your level are available to fight

-  Search for players on -2 levels or +2 levels.  If someone is waiting to fight, team up with another player from your level to fight them two vs one, or fight two players from lower levels.

-  If there are no match making options available and 30 seconds has passed, be matched against an AI wearing random equipment/enchants from your tier of level.

 One of the most important part about progressing through levels is collecting powerful equipment.  Each piece of equipment has a Tier level between 1 - 5, with 5 being the most powerful.  Each piece of equipment  also has a rarity from common to Legendary,  Any Tier or Rarity of gear can drop on any level, however higher level tier drops are much more common the higher level you are on.

Based on the rarity and tier of the equipment, the statistics on each piece of gear is calculated in the following way.

Legendary = 5 stat bonus 

Rare = 3 stat bonus

 Uncommon = 2 stat bonus

 Common = 1 stat bonus

The value of the stat bonuses are calculated by the Tier level of the equipment multiplied by a constant.

Currently dent contains 80 Unique pieces of equipment, but I would like to increase this to 200 if my game is funded.

 Enchantments can be collected in a similar way to equipment.  Each Enchantment has a rarity, but there is only one tier of enchantments.  Each enchantment adds a certain perk to your projectile.  Here is a list of some of the enchantments implemented.

Without Enchantment

Triple Shot + Shot Speed

Triple Shot + Shot speed + Poison + Increased Size + Split Projectile

Currently there is around 12 unique enchantments, I wish to increase this value to 25 - 30 by release.

 Dent contains multiple types of Enemies that are trying to kill you.  Enemies have a chance to drop equipment and enchantments to help you on your journey,  Each type of enemy can have multiple variations and come in many shapes and sizes.  There are also Rare enemies, that will have more Life and Damage than the normal variation of enemy, but will have a much higher chance of dropping equipment.  

Here are some of the enemies currently in the game.

Currently I have around 10 unique types of enemies, with funding I would like to increase this to 25 on release.

 As you journey through the dungeon levels, you will come across special rooms.  These rooms require some form of objective to complete or choice to make to continue.  Here is a list of some of the rooms that are currently implemented:

-  Dark Room (choose a path, walk through the dark or stay safe in the light)

- Gauntlet Room (Battle through rooms of enemies, you cannot pass until everything in the room is dead)

- Wave Room (Battle waves of spawning enemies, you must find the source of the spawn and kill it to move on)

-  Heat Maze (A mini maze you have to find your way out of.  Oh yeah and the floor becomes hot doing damage to you the longer you take)

Currently I have 5 Special rooms implemented, I would like to have 10 - 15 by release!

What I will spend the money on

Basically I can sum it up in one 3 letter word.  ART.  The programming I can do, the art I cannot =(  I did some figures and I think if I can get 2000 that will cover all of the remaining art for equipment, enemies and rooms.

For Geeks

I wrote this game from scratch using Monogame and C# .Net 4.5.  It was a MASSIVE challenge as when I started my c# skills were quite shaky, however my day job is not a .NET DEV so I think it paid off!

Risks and challenges

So a few years ago I decided to make a game, almost from scratch using XNA and c#. What started off as a learning experience turned into a super fun hobby. Eventually I converted the game over to Monogame as XNA was no longer to be supported by microsoft.

The biggest challenge I guess I face is it's just me! I do outsource most of my art as I am definitely not what you would call talented in the art department. But all of the programming is done by me and I am using my own engine!

Another challenge I will face is moving to the project onto steam. I wish to use their multiplayer API to connect players. Currently I implemented by own version of a match making service, but hey why not use all the cool stuff steam offers!
