Stretch goals and new rewards!

Hey guys! We've spent a lot of time talking about what Telepath Tactics is; now, I'd like to take a moment to talk in detail about what the game can be. Let's start with the basics, then get more exotic:

Basic things we get when we meet $25,500

I mentioned this stuff in broad strokes before, but let me spell out exactly what sort of audiovisual content I plan to use the money on if we squeak by with just $25,500:

  • Character portraits for every character;
  • Character sprites for both sexes;
  • Animated NPC sprites;
  • Extra tiles (e.g. smoother, less blocky transition tiles; more tiles showing variable elevation; a desert tileset);
  • Extra destructible objects (e.g. stalagmites, treasure chests, weapons racks, stoves, an "open" variation for the door objects, ice and igneous rock bridge blocks);
  • Nicer looking menus, dialog boxes, icons, and other UI elements;
  • Individualized attack / skill icons to differentiate the different attacks;
  • High quality sound effects for every last thing in the game;
  • Another 20-30 minutes of high quality, original music (including extra battle tracks so you're not stuck listening to same song in every battle).

All of these things will make Telepath Tactics much more polished and enjoyable, but some of them--like the NPC sprites, alternate gender sprites, and extra tiles depicting variable elevation--will directly impact the campaign itself by affecting the variety of scenarios I will be able to put in. (More elevation tiles, for instance, will mean more flexibility to craft scenarios featuring elevation effects.) And needless to say, having this stuff will also have a pretty big impact on your own ability to create interesting campaigns as well!

But let's go beyond the basics--with more resources, we can take this game from great to legendary! Without further ado, here are the stretch goals.

$35,000 - Mobile Ports

At $35,000 raised, I'll port Telepath Tactics to iOS and Android devices so you can play it on the go. Want to fight a battle on the train? Feel like having a quick multiplayer match at a friend's house? Just whip out your phone and you're good to go! The extra funds from this stretch goal will go to cover the costs of reworking the game with intuitive touch controls and ensuring that the game's assets fit properly / are easy to tap on differently sized touch screens.

$45,000 - Choices and Consequences

Right now, Telepath Tactics is a linear, Fire Emblem-style game with permadeath. The "permadeath" part means that there are already big consequences for the tactical choices you make in the game's battles--but what about noncombat choices? Wouldn't it be cool if the game supported dialog options, faction allegiances, and a plot line that could fork based on the player's decisions? (The correct answer to that question, by the way, is "Hell yes!")

Adding this would entail a pretty big increase in the game's scope. However, at $45,000, I'll be able to take some time off from my day job and dedicate myself to working full-time on expanding the game's scripting system in order to make these sorts of choices and consequences possible.

$50,000 - Dungeon tilesets and objects

Want a dungeon tileset complete with spiked pits and scriptable buttons and levers? Me too! At $50,000, I'll be able to cover the costs of commissioning this stuff.

$80,000 - Dedicated Linux Port

I know that AIR can be a little wonky on Linux, and I'd like to make sure that the game runs well on every distro. At $80,000, I'll be able to hire a programmer who knows Linux development like the back of his/her hand to help me port the game natively to Linux.

$100,000 - Phoenix-like rebirth as a wRPG!

At $100,000, I'll be able to take a full year off of work and craft a new portion of the engine to support open exploration, player-initiated character dialog, and side quests. In short: the game will go from being "a tactical RPG" to a full-on "wRPG with robust mod support that just happens to also sport the best tactical combat system of any wRPG, ever."

So that's that. Those are the stretch goals. Are you inspired? I know I am! Please pledge what you can, and encourage your friends to give generously--we still have three weeks to make Telepath Tactics not merely great, but frickin' incredible.

Which brings me to...

New Rewards!

To make sure that pledging at a higher level is worth your while, I've decided to sweeten the pot a bit. First, I'm throwing in free copies of my past games for folks able and willing to give a little extra:

  • In addition to your normal rewards, everyone who pledges at or above $40 will now receive a free copy of Telepath Psy Arena 2, an addictive tournament-style tactics game with team management, challenge matches, randomly generated training battles, and 10 leagues filled with fights that will test your tactical skill!
  • On top of that, everyone who pledges at or above $100 will also get a free copy of my last game, Telepath RPG: Servants of God, a Middle East steampunk tactical wRPG about oppression, democracy, God, and the nature of knowledge. (That game normally costs $25 all on its own, so this is a pretty killer value!)

And finally, a gentle reminder about the bump-up bonus:

  • Whatever you choose to pledge, bump it up by $9 to get another copy of Telepath Tactics for a friend. (That's a 10% discount off the price of the game!) You'll be glad you did this when the game comes out and you have someone you know to battle with. ;)
