About this project
We are combining the long lasting heritage of wood crafting, spirit, and expertise of a new generation combined into new first wooden monocoque bike. The production of our bikes leaves the lightest environmental footprint as possible.
Tratar Bikes has captured the imagination of many people around the Europe through different events such as the Ljubljana month of design, Long Night of Research in Vienna, TEDx in Klagenfurt, Cartes 2014 in Paris, pre-Expo event in Rome, and many more. At every event, Tratar Bikes always had the power to give people a stellar riding experience.
We believe that the city ride is not just about getting from point A to point B, but more about appreciating the journey. We believe our wooden bikes will give riders a comfortable and luxurious experience. The ride with our bikes is smooth and always recognised, wherever you are.
Tratar Bikes are the first handmade wooden monocoque bicycle frames with an optimized proportion between wood and metal to offer the best possible ride. The product came out of family with a long lasting tradition in woodcraft combined with the spirit and expertise of passionate team.
With ten years' experience under our belt, we invested a lot of time into optimising the weight, design, and performance of our bicycles. During our research and through years of studying, we found out the optimal construction for building wooden bike frames.
Tratar Bikes are designed to use metal and wood in perfect proportions for the best ride experience. The metal parts are CNC machined and robot welded to ensure the best possible quality. Bikes are made out of carefully selected ash and oak wood from Slovenia - a beautiful country with more than a half of its surface covered with forests.
The veneer in the frame is oriented to reassure best bike frame properties and they are then glued in large gluing tools. Our principle of the monocoque process in producing our bikes is very similar to carbon fiber monocoque construction. In this way there we minimise the number of the bike frame parts and potential weak spots. Building bicycle frames this way is much more demanding and expensive, so not many producers have previously done it this way. We apply our special two layer component coating system to protect each wooden bike frame against everyday use.
We are presenting two versions of our bike to the commuters. A single gear single-speed bike and two geared kick shift bike for those who want a more dynamic ride.
The hand finished Tratar single-speed and kick shift bikes are completely recyclable. Our locally sourced wood is not only an eco-friendly material, it is used for the exceptional comfort, because it damps the vibrations from the road almost like no other material. Metal is used in fastening places to ensure best fittings for standard bicycle components.
Tratar Bikes are light and durable to offer maximum rider’s satisfaction. The bikes offer a luxury comfort ride due to our special design, engineering and superior wood damping properties.

Risks and challenges
From the design and engineering point of view, the work has already been done for a while now. Thanks to our 10 years of experience in this field, we feel very confident with the design and engineering. With our knowledge from the long lasting tradition, we feel confident to maintain the standards of the industry and gather all the needed expertise.
The molding and tooling is ready for the first batch, the initial prototype has been built and tested.
Some risks and challenges might come our way when we start our first large-scale production of our bikes, and we want to be upfront about that. Our backers invest in us, so we want to do everything we can to minimize the risks involved. Operational logistics might delay the assembly time of the bike a bit, but there is no need to worry because our team and partners have broad experience with shipping and export. In all matters we will keep the lines of communication with our backers open, and update you about any developments. To ensure a smooth and well-organized process, we have contacted and visited all the suppliers necessary for the mass production.
We are sure that the timing will be respected and done on time. After this phase we would be ready to deliver you our products for the commuting season 2015 - and we are really looking forward to it.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
