About

A writer is someone who has reached the point where reading isn’t enough anymore.

I’m a writer.

An author is someone who wants his or her writing to be read.

I’m an author.

A dreamer is someone who often gazes blearily into the distance, and in conversation he or she commonly reverts to the terms “if only” or “what if”.

I’m a dreamer.

So what do I, as a writer, author, and dreamer, do? I write, I look for people to read my stories, and I dream of people all over the world being able to read my writing for free.

Yep, for free.

Sound familiar? Well, you've probably looked at my biography page then. And it's true.

But (here comes my dreamer side) if only I could write full time and have people read all my writing at no cost… and also be able to access art of my world, books, and characters with no price tag! The problem is this: writing, editing, and artwork all cost money. So my goal is to have so many people interested in one or two of my price-tagged books (which would cost a grand total of less than $10) that those couple of books can pay off the costs of all my other works. So what if you could be part of this? If you love dark, medieval, fairy-tale-infused fantasy, this is the place for you. And the best part? I’m only just getting started!

Flames of Solsgard is a little collection of short stories that brings a new world to life. The main character followed is Talmere of Nerida, a seasoned volsark. His existence was simple: stand vigil at druidic rituals and protect Vaelandic people from invaders. But when war saw the druids destroyed, Talmere and his remaining brethren were left adrift. Times are no longer easy for the once-honored volsarks; their defeat left their countrypeople with mixed feelings toward them. And as the druids foretold: blood is the beginning of even darker tales.

Stretch goal 1: If this project reaches $10,000, I will add another story to the collection for anyone donating from Tier 2 ($3) and up.

Stretch goal 2: If this project reaches $25,000, I will be in immediate contact with my artist to put together some concept/landscape/character sketches. These will be emailed out to anyone donating from Tier 3 ($9) and up. Until that goal is reached, I won't be able to get a serious estimate of when that will be ready, but it should be available before November.

Stretch goal 3: I know this one sounds a bit wacky, but if we can reach $100,000, I'll be sending a nice sum to my artist to have him work on a few larger collections of art (similar to stretch goal 2, but to a much greater extent and on a much longer basis). I've been hoping to do this for a long time, but seeing as I'm working on this on my own, I simply haven't had the funds. Assuming these collections are funded by this project, they will be released on my website for free upon completion.

Why Kickstarter?

I plan to put Flames of Solsgard up on Amazon as a Kindle eBook, but the price there for the full vanilla version will be $4 USD. The same will cost about $2.30 USD if you back this project. I really wanted to launch this book on Kickstarter to pitch this project to you and give you the opportunity to get in on some early-access extras. I also really want to push for the stretch goals to fund further work!

Excerpt:

Vadlik stood. Vadlik the one-eyed. That was new. His face and shoulders and torso and arms were collections of scars and scratches, some self-afflicted, others gained from fights. His raven-black hair hung loose behind him. His chin bore thick stubble. He looked around at the others and chuckled his husky chuckle. "Do I have a story? Perhaps." He poured himself another shot of black whiskey, downed it, then poured another and threw that back as well. He grimaced. "Near a moon ago, I caught wind of an insurgency group. Urskania pushing into Taratine lands. Fact that I heard about it was the kicker for me; if I'd heard about it, news'd probably gone over the border as well. I smelled blood. So I wait at a likely river crossing. I spend three days watching, fishing, waiting.

"Then they come, just before the fourth dawn. Two score. Urskanian knights, mostly, clad in blacksmith's nightmares, but they were accompanied by a couple of sorcerers and witches, probably from down south.

"I just watch them. It's a cold dawn on the moors. Mist everywhere. They make it to the river, but then they pause for a bit and a sorcerer conjures up a flame to light the crossing. They're emptying their boots on the other side when Taratines rise up out of the mist and butcher them. One of the witches lights half the ambush on fire before she's cut down, but they're practically on top of the river. Lot of good that did. The Urskanian screams die down quickly enough. The sobs take a little longer."

Risks and challenges

This project is on track to completion already, but there are a few things remaining.

Obstacle 1: art. The artist I've contracted for my works is great, but he has other things to do as well. This means that art can delay things a bit. However, he seems to be on track for September or earlier (I've estimated a September release, but I'm hoping for July or August).

Obstacle 2: writing and editing. Not really an obstacle, but still a minor hurdle. Just finishing things up still. Because I can't work on writing full time, I'm often wiped after work and don't put enough time into writing, but it will definitely be ready before the end of September. And honestly, the more funding, the more time I can put into the writing (and future projects).

Obstacle 3: creating the paperback and hardcover versions. This will be the biggest challenge, as it will require test copies and alterations until a final version is ready for shipping. I've done it before, so I know the processes, but it still will result in minor delay. I hope to ship before the estimated November, but unfortunately I can't guarantee it being earlier.
