Noelle Andressen is the Artistic Director and Founder of Rubans Rouges Dance Company. Her dance company is a labor of love.
Noelle herself is a dancer and instructor that loves to work with other dancers, "I'm madly in love with dancers--all of them are beautiful..."
That love for dancers tugged on her heart strings and caused her to "pay it forward". As she was profusely, humbly thanking one of her dance mentors (Robert Salas) for helping her get started, he said to her: "It's my pleasure to help you out, as long as you do me one favor, when you are able--you in turn help out others." Noelle has always remembered that and now this is her chance to make her mentor proud of her by not only succeeding as a dancer/producer/choreographer, but to show growth as a person.
"I named it "Awakenings & Beginnings" because I'm hoping to give new artists their "Beginnings", a place to start showcasing their work in a very good venue. Then also giving seasoned artists a place find a new growth--an "Awakening" within their souls to push themselves beyond their current artistic expression and find more and new ways to share with people."
To get an idea for the quality and style of the company's work, take a look at this video. This is one of the pieces Rubans Rouges Dance Company will be featuring at the festival: "The Silent Rose"
"We at Rubans Rouges Dance Company have a deep love for artists and want to help promote their talents as well as nurture dancers in our company. It's not easy getting started, at times it's quite difficult. We also want to provide a non-censored place for artists to share their work without having to pay for a venue. This includes having new choreographers share their work, new dancers get exposure, and for the company's artistry to grow and reach out to the surrounding communities to offer venue exchanges. "
This very exchange is something that was started by Misa (pictured below) and Stephen Kelly of ArtBark International and The Future Traditions Foundation. They too are also her mentors guiding her in the art world and being a gracious light of reciprocity.
Noelle shows support for their vision and joined their mission. "I hope other artists join in as well and help this goodness grow."
Another aspect of community is creating an atmosphere of non competitive and supportive outlets of outreach to promote inter-city, inter-community artistic exchanges. This way artists can get the exposure in many other cities, communities that they normally wouldn't.
"We're showcasing the hottest dance and performance companies from: Santa Barbara, North Hollywood, Los Angeles, Hollywood, Burbank, Pasadena, Glendale, and Ventura County. Support them as they present their newest and greatest works. Dance Companies include: ArtBark International, Hart Pulse Dance Company, Megill and Company, Movement Theatre CoLab, Nancy Evans Dance Theater (pictured above), OdDancity, Relentless Dance Theater, Rubans Rouges Dance Company, and Wesonic Artroupe."
Also works from other artists: Noelle Andressen, Wendy Baity, Melissa Block, Alex Floyd, Misa Kelly and Stephen Kelly, Suzy Hagopian (pictured at top), Kirby Harrell, Amanda Hart (pictured above), Jenn Logan, Milva Rinaldelli, Robert Salas, Heather Smith (pictured below) and many more. You can find out more detailed information at the event site: Awakenings & Beginnings 2013
"Our dancers don't just perform; they have been working hard wearing many hats to raise funds, create art, and put together an awesome show for our community. We are more than glad to share this venue space with all the joining artists, it's like opening up our home to them. We're almost there as far as reaching our goals but we are looking to you to be a part of creating and furthering a performance art community.
Just $25.00 will help support a dancer and pay for one costume. $50.00 will help contribute to our providing a skilled lighting technician to make all the dancers look their best. We invite you to be a part of our community's history as you help make some dancer's and choreographer's dreams come true.
We thank you deeply for your time."
Special note: all music contained within this proposal is copyrighted by Noelle's husband, Kristopher. He has given her permission to freely use his Emmy nominated scores ;o) One of the very unique things about Rubans Rouges Dance Company is that it is a husband and wife collaboration. Kristopher provides all the music compositions for their dance pieces while she provides the movement. Together they produce dance films which is also in their background.
"I thank my husband for all the music he gives me that makes my heart dance. Please know that while I can dance to other people's music, and be moved by it...yours reaches the depths of my soul so my feet never touch the earth but soar."
Risks and challenges
Since we've already been working on this project for a while now, these are the things we've overcome: photographer (resolved), making the space work for our project (resolved), music clearance (resolved), insurance (resolved), film projection (resolved), scheduling conflicts (resolved), promotional materials (resolved).
One of our newest challenges is being able to find a Lighting Designer so we can ensure a professional quality to make all the artists and their performances look their best. We'll get in touch with the theater departments in various colleges and universities to see if we can work out an exchange: their services for credit and complimentary tickets.
If anything should come up that's unexpected, we have an incredible group of people from the community that will help. Also, with my and my husband's indie film making background, we know how to resolve problems quickly and resourcefully. I considered it on-the-job-training for future endeavors. We've always finished our projects no matter what, even if the hurdles seemed insurmountable.
For example: Our very first film project "Baby Doe's Heartbeat" garnered 5 region Emmy nominations (pictured above).
