What are INSPIRE playing cards?
If you ask a magician how they got into magic, they will simply tell you this: "I saw a trick done once, and I wanted to learn how to do it." In other words, they were INSPIRED. Being a magician is awesome, but sometimes it is frustrating. Sometimes when learning a new sleight of hand technique, or trying to figure out how another magician's trick is done is very annoying, and we tend to give up. My goal when coming up with this deck is to inspire magicians, and muggles (non magic folk) to persevere and believe that they can do whatever they put their mind to.
I have always been interested in magic. I remember showing my grade four teacher a simple trick where I memorize the top card and have them pick any card and memorize it. I then asked her to place her card on top of the deck, and cut it into the middle. After she did so, I went through the deck to find the card that I memorized, and I knew her card was right above it. It is the simplest trick out there, but I remember everyone around me was totally confused by it. It was a great feeling. At that point in my life, I was too young to think about continuing with magic and making it a career, but that was due to change in the next couple years.
My first time seeing a live magician really blew my mind. The guy was so good, he was doing everything that I still dream of doing. He took the watch off my grandfathers wrist and put it on his own, he could levitate a borrowed 20$ bill, he could change 5$ bills into 100$ bills, he could ask me to name a card, then have me pick one, and it is the exact one I just named.... Everything he showed me was incredible. A true professional. When I got home, I instantly went on youtube and started looking things up like "magic for beginners" or "simple magic tricks". A few days later, I had already moved on from trying to learn magic. I was busy with other things and life, and sort of forgot about how amazing everything was.
Later that month though, I was rushed to the emergency with excruciating pain in my chest. The doctors originally thought it to be an inflammation in the lining of my heart, but the pain later seemed to simply be muscular problems due to growing pains. Four years later, I still have this extreme pain in my chest, and after countless test, I still have no conclusive evidence as to what it could be. The growing pains theory makes the most sense since I am 6'7'' and only 18 years old!
Anyways, that summer I was ordered to take certain medication for a month, and during that period, to stay away from sports. This was a real blow to me, because sports have always been a huge part of my life. I had to find something else to do with my time that didn't involve physical exertion. Hmm... what did I do all summer? You guessed it. I started learning and practicing magic. I practiced so much, if I wasn't asleep, I was practicing shuffling, card tricks, card flourishes, anything. I got to the point where my fingers were all blistered because I was practicing the standard riffle shuffle the entire time I watched the full Lord of the Rings Trilogy in one day. Needless to say, I can now preform a riffle shuffle in my sleep.
I am completely guilty of letting ideas consume my mind. When I get an idea I like (such as magic), it ends up being the only idea I can think of for weeks, months, or even years. I now sincerely apologize to my mom, dad, brother, grandparents, friends... for showing them probably 30 tricks a day for 2 months straight during the summer in which I was sick.
Since then, I am sad to say I gave up magic at one point. I was obsessed with coming up with my own tricks, and my own effects, that I got discouraged when I couldn't. I gave up for probably half a year, barely touching a deck of cards ever. Looking back, that was probably one of the best lessons I have ever learned. I now hate myself for quitting for half a year, because it was completely pointless: Magicians don't need to come up with their own tricks to be good. The best tricks are the simple ones, but only if they are done well. That means you have to practice. Practice A LOT. I love the expression "practice makes perfect", but I don't believe it is true. A better quote that is derived from that one, is "perfect practice makes perfect". The one extra word gives that whole saying a new meaning. When you practice, don't waste your time. Sit down, and practice one thing over, and over, and over. Practice it perfectly. Don't practice it half halfheartedly and go perform it because you're bored, keep practicing. Nothing can ever be perfect. There is always room for improvement, but the best way to get as close to perfect as possible, is with inspiration.
Everything starts with Inspiration, especially magic. Not only to get into magic do you need inspiration, but also to learn new things, or practice to make your sleight of hand as good as somebody else's. Inspiration leads to practice, which leads to performing. The two steps inspiration, and practice are necessary to becoming better at magic. My goal with the INSPIRE deck of playing cards is to completely cover the first step for you.
About six months ago, I started an instagram page called pics_of_cards. Needless to say, I needed a new name. The name I came up with is The Fifth Jack. It was inspired by the magician movie called "Now You See Me". In the movie, the four magicians call themselves "The Four Horsemen". After looking up what "The Four Horsemen" meant, I found out it was refering to the four kings in a deck of cards. I tried to use TheFourHorsemen as my username, but it was taken. I then decided I would go with TheFifthHorsemen, which was also taken. I then decided that TheFifthJack was a suitable name, since I wasn't worthy of referring to myself as a king yet anyways.
Since then, I have over 830 followers with a large majority of those being magicians, and over 38,000 likes on my 400+ pictures! I post two pictures per day, and along with those pictures, I post inspirational quotes. If I have inspired at least one person to do something based off of the pictures and quotes that I have posted, then I call that a personal victory.
I now want to take Inspiration to a larger scale. (2500 decks of inspiration to be exact). My goal is to get these decks of cards into your hands, and inspire you to practice, and perform.
Why should I buy INSPIRE playing cards?
Over the years I have collected tons of different customized decks of cards. I guess you could say this is were I found the inspiration to make my own! What I have done with INSPIRE is I have fully customized the cards. The court cards are standard bicycle court cards, but their colours have been changed to match the deck's colour scheme. Here is a picture of the back design:
NOTE: All pictures of the cards have been created in MS Paint and are therefore pixelated. Before the cards are printed, they will be redone by a professional graphical designer from The United States Playing Card Company. When the cards are printed, they will look ten times better than they do here!
What is the back design?:
The back design is an idea that I came up with after testing many other back designs. The inner border fades from black to purple to make it more visually stunning when performing. The TFJ logo in the middle is my logo from my Instagram page: TheFifthJack. (www.instagram.com/thefifthjack) I love the way the logo looks, so I decided to implement it into my back design to make it more interesting, and to brand my cards. Surrounding the logo is a very intricate brick-like design. I had a version without the intricate white lines, and the cards simply looked too boring. In the center of the card, the three letters are tfj. They are in the shape of an "ambigram", which is a word that reads the same upside down, thus maintaining the symmetrical back design.
I have customized the standard Spades, Hearts, Clubs, and Diamonds pips on every card. The font on the cards are also customized. All red cards have been changed to purple to match the colour scheme! Check them out:
-Printed by: The United States Playing Card Company
-Card Finish: Magic (also known as embossed)
-Paper Stock: Standard (The same as any Bicycle Deck)
The custom aces:
Most decks have only one custom ace, and personally I think that four is better than one! Check out the four custom aces which include inspirational quotes!
What else is there in the deck?
You know when you open a new deck of cards and you take out the advertisement cards and sometimes take out the jokers? Yeah I think that is a total waste of cards. I don't know how else to break this to you guys, but there are no jokers or advertisement cards. :(. But before you get all upset, I'll tell you what has replaced them! FOUR GAFF CARDS! Yeah! Four trick cards! With these four tricks, you will be able to do numerous performances and routines to entertain your spectators.
Trick card #1:
A double backer. When I asked my magician followers on Instagram what kind of trick cards they wanted, there was almost a unanimous decision on a double backer. They are very handy for world famous tricks such as "the ambitious card".
Trick card #2:
A duplicate Jack Of Spades. You can use The Fifth Jack for countless mind boggling effects such as making their selected card appear in their back pocket!
Trick card #3:
This card is very interesting. I was thinking of a unique way to reveal the spectators chosen card and I came up with this card:
For those of you who don't recognize this, it is called a qrcode. You take a smart phone and you use a scan app on the qrcode. The phone will automatically load a website, and in this case, the website will reveal the card they just picked! An amazing trick since all the magic happens in the spectators hands!
Trick card #4:
The missing pip. You can use this card to vanish a pip, and make it reappear either on your skin, or preform a colour change to make it magically appear back on the card!
Don't worry if you don't know how to do any of these tricks! With every order, I will be including a link that will bring you to a video that will have in depth tutorials on how to preform magic with these four trick cards!
The box design:
An uncut sheet of playing cards. Frame it a put it on your wall!
-The INSPIRE card clip:
A leather card clip handcrafted by Ryan Edwards. This luxurious work of art will not only please your eyes every time you look at it, but it will also keep your brand new INSPIRE deck of playing cards safe when in your pocket or bag.

-INSPIRE forcing deck. Every card in the deck is the same! Know the spectators card. Every time.
All orders will be packaged safely so no damages will come to your rewards. These packages will be shipped with Canada Post.
-How long will it take to ship to me?
This all depends on where your package is being shipped to. If you live anywhere other than in Canada, it will take approximately 1-8 weeks. 8 weeks is the LATEST possible date for your package to arrive. I have personally shipped many packages worldwide in the past year, and when the shipping service says it will take up to 8 weeks, it typically takes less than half that time. If you live in the United States, your package will be there much sooner than if you lived overseas.
30 days for the funding period.
6-8 weeks for the cards to be printed and shipped to my house.
1 week to ship off all rewards to backers.
1-8 weeks for your package to arrive.
If you add all this up, your package could arrive any time between halfway through April and late June / very early July.
Don't let the prices scare you. I have tried to keep my prices as low as possible, while being very similar to other kickstarter playing card projects.
Shipping is a huge cost these days. For domestic shipping, it will cost anywhere from 3-5$ to ship a single deck. You also have to take into account the cost of the padded envelope or box. If it is shipped in a box, it will also need bubble wrap or packing peanuts to make sure the rewards do not get damaged at all.
Total cost breakdown:
Card production, taxes, shipping to distribution location, shipping to anywhere in Canada : $8000
Shipping supplies (boxes, padded envelopes, bubble wrap, packing peanuts ect.) $800
Kickstarter fees (5%) and payment processing fees (3-5%) $900.
Handling costs (ink and paper for printing shipping labels and the Gaff cards tutorial link) 200$.
As we get closer to the goal of $10,000, I will release some stretch goals such as a free Inspire bracelet with every package, or a red version of the deck
NOTE: All photos are rough copies of the final cards which I have designed on MS Paint. Before being printed, a graphic designer from The United States Playing Card Company will redo the cards in a professional program so that they will look even better when printed!

Risks and challenges
I have been carefully planning this project for months now. I have consulted with the founder of previous successful playing card projects here on kickstarter, and they have filled me in with any and all information I have needed. I have also been in contact with Bicycle Playing Cards company almost every day. Every time I would come up with a new question, they would answer it perfectly.
I do not expect any risks or challenges that come with completing this project. If any problems do arise, I will handle them as best I can.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
