Update: We're Funded!!!

Thank you everyone who has backed and supported this project! The project couldn't happen without you, you're all amazing! :D

Now on to the stretch goals, and unlocking some awesome new colors!

Hi everyone! My name is Gary and I'm the creator of Fablestone Dice. And this Kickstarter campaign is for the first ever production run of my original dice set called Bone Origins.

One of my favorite aspects of gaming in a fantasy world is the collection of rare treasures and valuable loot! Often these objects have a fascinating back story, perhaps even one we make up ourselves.

I got thinking, wouldn't it be cool and immersive if the dice we used were just that… curious items that could have actually been discovered on one of our dungeon crawls.

Fablestone Dice don't use any conventional numbers or pips. And look as though they could have been lifted from a fantasy setting.
Fablestone Dice don't use any conventional numbers or pips. And look as though they could have been lifted from a fantasy setting.

The problem is the dice we typically use just don't have an appearance that is consistent with something that could be found in a fantasy setting. Even those with additional artwork still rely on either the standard dice pip layout or the same Hindu-Arabic characters (0, 1, 2 … 9) that we encounter everywhere in our daily life.

I like to think that just as the worlds we explore often have their own languages, they would also have their own systems for representing numbers that are different from our own. The idea behind Fablestone Dice is to have dice that don't use regular pips and numbers, but instead use a completely new kind of way to communicate; one that could have been conceived by inhabitants of any one of our favourite fantasy settings.

Introducing Bone Origins, the first dice set by Fablestone Dice, and an entirely new concept in dice.

These dice don't have any conventional pips or numbers, but instead use their own language of bone shaped markings. This means that they look really cool, and are fun to use, while also being a curiosity that our heroes might find in the depths of an old dungeon!

These dice are inspired by the themes of bone and blood.
These dice are inspired by the themes of bone and blood.

The dice look really unique, but these aren't just random markings. They have been carefully designed so that the dice are just as intuitive and easy to use as regular dice.

The markings on the dice follow a structured pattern so that anyone who knows it is a six sided dice should be able to work out the pattern just by examining the sides, and with a bit of deduction!

See if your friends can figure them out!

Some of the dice and their values.
Some of the dice and their values.

The pattern is that there are two types of bone markings: a small dot-like bone and a larger longer bone. When you add the markings on a side together, the small bone is worth one and each large bone is worth two.

To use the dice add the bones on a side together. The small bone (dot) is worth one and the large bones are worth two each. For example, the side with two large bones and one small bone is worth 5.

Of course, once you know the pattern you don't need to count the bones each time you use the dice. The bones have been carefully arranged so that each side has a unique and easily recognisable shape, that can be recognised immediately from any angle.

This was the most demanding aspect of designing the dice, and a lot of care went into fine tuning the arrangement of each side's bones so that they intuitively reflect the number they represent.

The markings on the dice are easily recognisable from any angle, even when they are upside down.
The markings on the dice are easily recognisable from any angle, even when they are upside down.

So just like a regular dice, after a few goes you should be able to recognise the value of a side immediately. Everyone who has had a go with the manufactured samples has found this to be the case, with the dice quickly becoming just as intuitive as normal dice.

But unlike normal dice, these ones look a lot cooler!

These dice look very different to any others, and are great fun to roll!

It's easy to use the dice as a normal six-sided dice.  But you can also read the markings in new ways, to roll them as different kinds of dice entirely...

Something useful about the Bone Origins dice is that you don't just have to use it as a regular six sided dice. You can also use the same dice as though it is three sided (a D3) or even a two-sided coin. To do this, you just count the bones differently as follows:

To use the dice as though it only has three sides: just count the total number of bone markings on each side. In other words, don't count each large bone as two, just count every marking as though it is a small bone.
To use the dice as though it only has three sides: just count the total number of bone markings on each side. In other words, don't count each large bone as two, just count every marking as though it is a small bone.
To use the dice as though it is a coin: just take sides with a small bone to be “Heads”. Sides that don't have a small bone (they just have large bones) are “Tails”.
To use the dice as though it is a coin: just take sides with a small bone to be “Heads”. Sides that don't have a small bone (they just have large bones) are “Tails”.

As far as I know, this feature is something that is entirely new for dice. Great for when you don't have a coin handy!

But the features don't stop there, there is even more to discover about these intriguing dice.

The dice have an appearance that would let them exist as in any fantasy setting, but they also come with an intriguing backstory as to why and how they would exist in such a world.
The dice have an appearance that would let them exist as in any fantasy setting, but they also come with an intriguing backstory as to why and how they would exist in such a world.

One of the key design focuses of the dice was to create something that looks like it could have been discovered as a trinket in any one of our favorite fantasy settings. I chose the bone theme for this because it is so ubiquitous and has a place in almost any fictional setting.  Almost all role playing games have a sense of death prevalent in the world.

It also makes sense that primitive dice created in a fantasy setting would have been made of bone, because it would be a readily available material that is easy to work with primitive carving tools; just as our own real world ancestors made their dice from bones.

These dice have the appearance that they are carved out of bone, with a smooth polished finish for perfect rolling.
These dice have the appearance that they are carved out of bone, with a smooth polished finish for perfect rolling.

Although the dice aren't actually made of bone, they are a combination of two different resins that are mixed in a way to achieve an appearance like bone. The design went through a long process of experimenting with different combinations of resin until the perfect one was found!

To expand further upon the idea that these dice could be found as items in any fantasy setting, there is also backstory as to how and why they would exist in such a world. Here is a taster, with the full backstory being later shared with every backer as an additional reward.

Yet another way to use the dice?!

Using the dice to speak to the dead can be a bit of fun, but what gets really interesting is if you choose to use it within your roleplaying games. Suppose your hero faces a tough decision... maybe they would use the mysterious dice they found earlier in a dungeon to seek guidance from the dead.

Assume the role of your actual character in rolling their Bone Origins dice, and break down the fourth wall for the first time!

I am hoping to produce the Bone Origins dice in eight different colors, each with a unique take on the theme of bones, blood and death.

The initial funding goal will make the first two of these available, which are the Bone Ivory and Blood Red dice. The other colors will become available as stretch goals, so as each funding goal is reached that color will become available to choose for your dice.

There are also three additional stretch goal colors, that were requested by backers during the course of the Kickstarter campaign. Great choices everyone!

With most of the dice featuring a blend of more than one resin, the result is that every single dice looks unique and is slightly different in appearance to other dice of the same color; based on how the resins have taken form.

I hope you agree that each of the colors look really cool and unique in their own way, and that the eight dice together would make for a really great set! With your help, we will hopefully be able to manufacture all eight colors. The reason for the stretch goals is because there are additional costs associated with producing a run of each additional color.

The higher reward tiers allow you to mix and match colors of dice however you like, with the lower tiers letting you choose any single color.

All of the higher tier reward levels include a Bone Origins velvet dice bag.  The bag has a satin lining for protecting your dice, and is a good size (15cm x 10cm) so can hold plenty of them.  There are two designs of bag, which you can choose to mix and match between for any bags included in your reward. One bag features the Fablestone Dice logo, whereas the other bag (voted for by backers) features a Bone Origins motif.

The bags will initially be available with a red satin lining, but there are stretch goals to make other colors available.

Most reward levels already include the dice bag, but if you want additional bags they are available as an add-on.  You can freely mix and match your dice bag colors from any of those unlocked.

First and foremost, a massive thank you to anyone who chooses to support this project, whether by backing directly or sharing the campaign through social media like Facebook or Twitter.

I really hope that we will be able to bring the Bone Origins dice into production and can bring something new and exciting to role playing games and the world of dice.

For people choosing to back, there are now five reward tiers to choose from. All of the reward tiers include free shipping to anywhere in the world! So the higher tiers are more cost effective for this reason.

Every reward will also include a printed thank you card, containing links to Bone Origins resources on the web. These resources will fully explain how to use all the dice, as well as including the complete Bone Origins backstory (as a reward to backers) and additional artwork.

The card will come in especially helpful if you are planning to give the dice as a gift, as they will explain everything they need to know about their new dice!

The reward levels should contain all the dice and bags you need, but if you would like extra you can use the following add-ons. Just add the amounts as extra on top of any of the pledge levels.

Every reward tier and add-on includes free shipping anywhere in the world, so that everyone can have access to these dice!

If a Bone Origins velvet dice bag is included in your reward then the dice will be packaged inside the bag.

I expect to have received all the manufactured products in early November 2015, so I can begin sending them out to backers.  Most backers should receive their rewards by the end of that month, but to accommodate for unforeseen delays or a larger number of backers than expected then I would allow for early December 2015 for all rewards to have been received.

I will be handling processing and shipping myself, rather than relying on a third party fulfillment company. This means that I will be able to maintain the highest quality control with every pledge, making sure every dice meets the highest standard.

In order to ensure the highest level of quality control, I will be handling and shipping the rewards myself instead of relying on a third party fulfilment company.

I will be posting frequent updates throughout every stage of the manufacture and distribution of the rewards, so that every backer knows exactly how everything is progressing.

For people wanting a full range of polyhedral gaming dice, there is a stretch goal which will add a D8 and D10 to the Bone Origins range, in the same style as the D6.

A standard 7 dice polyhedral set contains a D4, D6, D8, D10, D00, D12 and D20. Whereas the complete Bone Origins polyhedral set will contain just a D6, D8 and D10.

Why just a D8 and D10?

As with the Bone Origins D6, each of the dice are usable in a number of different ways based on how you interpret the bone markings. So just as the Bone Origins D6 can be used as a D3 and a coin, the three Bone Origins dice will actually be equivalent to a complete seven dice polyhedral set.

If you are interested, a quick explanation of how to use the three Bone Origins dice as a standard seven dice set is here.

The polyhedral D8 and D10 are currently a stretch goal, due to the increased tooling and manufacturing costs. I really hope we are able to bring these dice into production as they offer something entirely new to polyhedral dice gaming. The idea of a minimalist 3 dice polyhedral set is pretty cool, and can mean we have to carry fewer dice around!

Once unlocked, the D8 and D10 polyhedral dice will be available initially in just the Bone Ivory color, but I will try to add other colors based on overall funding and demand for them.

Other Colors

If there is another color you would like that I haven't listed, then please comment in the update section.  If there is enough interest in a particular color, I will try to add it as a stretch goal.

The Future

Right now my focus is on the Bone Origins dice set and campaign. If the funding target is successful, then I will be busy getting the dice manufactured and fulfilling all of your pledges. After that, I am planning to expand the Fablestone Dice range with further designs and an online store, with the eventual dream of running this as a business.

Here's hoping the campaign is a success! Thank you in advance for helping to bring this idea into reality.

Let's try and set an exciting new standard in gaming dice!

Risks and challenges

This is my first ever Kickstarter project, and I will be posting plenty of updates throughout the whole process. I hope that it is as exciting for you as it is for me!

For the mass production of the dice, I will be using an experienced overseas manufacturer. The particular one I have chosen has a long background in high quality resin dice manufacture, and they are responsible for producing all of the samples photographed in my project. The manufacturer is able to take advantage of advanced techniques in blending different resins together in a single dice. This makes each of the different Bone Origins dice colors possible.

As with using any third party manufacture, there is an external dependancy on them fulfilling the order in a timely and high quality manner. Based on the quality and delivery time of the different samples I have had manufactured for me, I have a lot of faith in them to deliver the mass production run to the highest standard and within the expected timeline. I also sense their personal interest in the project, based on the extensive dialogue involved in developing the project to where it is ready to manufacture each style of dice!

There is always a risk that for some unlikely and unforeseeable reason the third party manufacturer is unable to deliver on the project. If this is the case then I will source a new manufacturer and work with them to reproduce the same styles of dice to a high standard; keeping backers in the loop throughout the whole process. This would of course mean delays and the delivery date being pushed back. Although a problem like this seems unlikely given the manufacturers experience and proven track record so far.

I will be conducting backer surveys after funding has finished in order for people to choose their dice colors, bag colors and add-ons. I have scheduled this process to take two weeks after campaign closing, which should give every backer plenty of time to make their choices. I hope most people will be excited to fill in their survey and do so within this period. In order to keep the project running smooth and on schedule, I will have to initiate mass production after this survey period. For any backers who don't respond to the survey in time, I will try to order enough dice to make your color choices possible. However, I must reserve the right for late responses to the survey to be subject to stock availability once manufacturing has begun.

A lot of planning has gone into the project and delivery timeline, so I am confident that the project will run smoothly and as planned to schedule, with all rewards being delivered by December 2015.

Here's to a smooth project, and some great dice at the end of it!

Gary
