My name's Gary and I love tabletop gaming and dice! I'm also the founder of Fablestone Dice.
Our first project, Fablestone Dice: Bone Origins was successfully funded on August 28, 2015.
And we'd like to start off with a huge thank you to everyone who made that first project a reality! Whether by backing or sharing the project.
The support for the first project was incredible, and really appreciated so so much! I love making dice and bringing new ideas to them.
This is a follow up project to complete the Bone Origins set by adding to the D6 a D8 and a D10.
Thank you for checking out our new project!
Let's make some amazing dice! :D
What Are Bone Origins Dice?
Bone Origins dice are a unique kind of dice that, instead of using conventional pips and numbers, have their own intuitive language of bone shaped markings.
Although unique, the markings have been carefully designed to make the dice super easy to use and read when playing tabletop games.
Like the characters of an alphabet, each symbol on the Bone Origins dice is easily recognisable from any orientation.
This makes for a dice that is entirely unique, yet just as easy to use as any regular dice.
All while looking like curious bone carved trinkets that could have been picked up on a dungeon crawl in any one our roleplaying adventures!
What is This Project For?
The first Bone Origins project was hugely popular, but was focused on just the six-sided D6 dice.
There was a stretch goal to add the polyhedral dice D8 and D10, and this is something a lot of our backers have expressed a desire for. So we're hoping to now to make these a reality with their own project.
This new project is focused entirely on making the D8 and D10 a reality from the very beginning, with all three dice (D6, D8 and D10) available from the start.
With the unique way that each Bone Origins dice can be read in a variety of different ways, the D6, D8 and D10 are the equivalent of a standard 7-dice polyhedral set. This includes rolling them as a D4, D6, D8, D10, D12, D00 and even the iconic D20.
Some cool minimalist functionality that adds even more to these intriguing dice!
The D8 and D10 Dice
The D8 and D10 dice introduce four new sides, for numbers 7 to 10, and can be read the same way as the D6 by counting the bones.
The other 6 sides (1 - 6) on each of the D8 and D10 are the same as the D6.
Of particular note, is the 10 symbol on the D10. It is common for D10 dice to be numbered from 0-9 instead of 1-10. To allow for this, the bones for the 10 symbol have been shaped to resemble a circular zero.
So you can use the D10 as both kinds: 1-10 or 0-9.
Why just a D6, D8 and D10?
One of the unique features of the Bone Origins dice, is that each dice can be used in a number of different ways.
For example, the original D6 dice can be used as both a D3 and a D2 by interpreting the markings in a different way.
Just as the D6 can be used in different ways, so can the D8 and the D10, to make for a full polyhedral set.
For example, the D8 can also be used as a D4, by counting the bones differently:
For this reason, the Bone Origins collection doesn't need a D4 dice, because the D8 is already one! Awesome!
...and no more standing on a pointy D4 pyramid that has fallen on the floor!
A full standard 7-dice polyhedral dice set also contains a D00, D12 and D20, all of which can also be rolled using the three Bone Origins dice.
The D10 can be used as a D00 by reading the dice with the range 0-9 and multiplying the result by 10.
It's also possible to combine the D8 and D10 to make a D20:
The D20 might seem a bit abstract, but in practice (and after a few rolls) it quickly becomes surprisingly easy to read. Just as a 1 in front of a 5 is read as the number 15, the dot on the D8 is read in front of the D10 with the same meaning. So there's no actual addition; the dice can be read together as though spelling out the digits of a single number. A bit like adding a D00 to a D10.
Similarly, the D8 and D6 can be combined to make a D12:
The D12 is slightly tricker than the D20, as there is some addition involved whenever the D8 is showing a dot. Luckily, from playing childhood games with two D6's (such as Monopoly) adding a 6 to a D6 is something that should be pretty familiar.
Pretty awesome for just three dice! All you need for a full tabletop gaming experience.
Next lets look at the great new colors for this project...
Colors and Stretch Goals
Since our first Kickstarter project, the original Bone Origins dice has been re-developed with a new manufacturer to make for the very best production quality.
We are planning to make the D6, D8 and D10 dice initially available in the two backer favorites "Bone Ivory" and "Occultist Purple".
These were voted for by the backers of our previous project and make for a beautifully contrasting pairing.
The remaining colors are stretch goals, including the brand new "Nightmare Blue". So if the funding reaches any of these levels, the colors will unlock and can be chosen for your rewards.
There are also some other new beautiful colors, such as the "Dark Blood" and "Slime Green", that were suggested by our existing backers. If you have any other ideas for what you would like, do suggest them and they might also make it into the stretch goals.
The polyhedral dice shown above are CGI renders – a skill that I am trying to develop! These are for illustration purposes only, and as such may differ slightly from the finished dice.
For an accurate indication of the colors and 'swirling effects', here are some more photos of the production ready D6 samples that have already been produced:
For the stretch goal colors which do not yet have physical samples, we have allowed plenty of time after the campaign finishes to ensure that these are developed until the physical color reproductions are just right!
With stretch goals to bring the total to 10 different colors, these will make for a beautiful (and epic!) collection of dice!
Bone Origins Dice Bag
The velvet dice bags from our previous campaign were really popular, with great feedback from our backers.
We will be using the same company to manufacturer these as before, with the red satin lining. This time the bags will feature a reinvigorated design of the logo that was originally voted for by backers.
The bags feature a beautiful red satin lining to protect your dice, and a tough black velvet exterior.
Many of the higher reward tiers already include the velvet Bone Origins dice bag.
Additional bags are also available as add-ons by adding £4 per bag to your pledge.
There are several reward tiers available, for different types and quantity of dice. All of these include free shipping to anywhere in the world!
The best reward tiers allow you to mix and match colors and types (D6, D8, D10) of dice however you like. Awesome!
With the exception of the Bare Bones tier, all of the rewards also include one of the Bone Origins velvet dice bags shown above.
There are also some great early bird discounts for early backers. These have limited availability so grab them while you can!
Thank You Card
All of the shipped rewards will also include a printed thank you card, including links to the online Bone Origins resources - including a "How to Use" page for the dice.
Extra Dice Add-on
Extra dice are available as an add-on to the mix and match reward tiers only (Big Bone Mix, Monster Bones, Mammoth Bones and Colossal Bones). Extra dice can be added in a quantity of 6 for each additional £8 (approx 12 USD) added to your reward. The extra dice can be mix and matched, and can be added as many times as you like.
Additional Bone Origins velvet dice bags can also be added to any reward tier for £4 each.
As with our previous project, all our rewards include free shipping to anywhere in the world.
Delivery Date & Fulfilment
The delivery date for all the rewards is September 2016.
This includes some extra time to allow for any unforeseen issues that may arise, so we are optimistic that the rewards will actually be delivered earlier than this.
This also allows plenty of time for the additional stretch goal colors for which there are not yet physical samples. We will be developing the physical samples of these until the color reproductions are just right, so this could involve a few iterations of sample production.
I will be packing and posting all the rewards myself, rather than using a third party fulfilment company, as this way we can ensure that every reward is inspected and sent out at the highest quality.
You can also be assured that there will be plenty of updates and communication both during and after the campaign ends. I also try to involve backers as much as possible with project decisions, and to share any information that is interesting or important.
Anyone who has followed the updates from our first project will know that delivering the highest quality dice possible is something that I am extremely passionate about!
With our last project, we used a different manufacturer and had to overcome some quality issues during the fulfilment process. We even rejected the entire first batch of dice as these were not high enough for our exacting standards. Even so, we were able to deliver the project on time and with a great quality of dice being eventually sent out. So we are used to dealing with unforeseen issues arising, and making sure that the project is still fulfilled to the highest standard. And on time!
Since the last project, we have spent the early part of this year speaking with almost a dozen different possible manufacturers and evaluated many of their samples to find the best possible new manufacturer to work with. This ensures that we are producing the absolute best quality dice possible, and have great confidence that the project will run smoothly.
The D20 is such an iconic dice that it even has one of the most popular role playing systems named after it.
Although the Bone Origins triple set (D6, D8, D10) doesn't need one, there has been some interest that it would be cool to have a custom D20 - even if just for show.
One of the design issues faced with the D20 is how to fit the Bone Origins design onto a dice with so many small faces. Especially when a new 20th side could have up to 10 large bones on it.
There are a few different ways to make the D20 work - some of which are possibly quite cool. And I will be sharing these during the course of the campaign, to find out which is everyone's favorite.
There is also a stretch goal, so that if the funding reaches the £20,000 mark then we will be making a D20 with the chosen design, which will then be available as an add-on (not as part of the mix and match).
For backers of our previous project, Fablestone Dice: Bone Origins, it should be known that we will be using a new manufacturer for the polyhedral dice. While the dice are similar to the previous styles, there are some small differences. For example, the markings on the previous dice were flatter. Please bear this in mind when pledging for these new dice.

Support This Project
A huge thanks again for checking out the new project!
You can support this project by backing.
Or share the project with family, friends or anyone else who might like the project.
Or post the project on social media, such as Facebook or Twitter.
Thank you, your support for this project really is so appreciated! If we are able to unlock all the stretch goals, then this really could be one of the most epic dice collections ever! :)
Risks and challenges
This is our second Kickstarter project, and so there is a lot of experience that we will be carrying over to this one.
Every Kickstarter project creator or backer will know that it is not uncommon for there to be manufacturing issues, and this was indeed something that we encountered during our first project. Still, we were able to deal with all of these issues, reproduce the dice and fulfil the project successfully and to the highest standard of quality. And all of this within the original delivery schedule!
Because of the issues that were encountered, we have used the time since the first project to source a new more reliable manufacturer. This involved speaking with almost a dozen different possible manufacturers, and evaluating many of their samples, in order to find the best possible partner moving forward with our dice. With this new manufacturer in place, and some really beautiful physical samples, we have great confidence that this project will run smoothly.
You can also be assured that, as with our first project, there will be plenty of communication and updates once the campaign has finished and during the entire fulfilment process – with plenty of interesting information and photos being shared! :)
