About

What is the difference between? Between a drug trip and a secret agent? Between the lies you tell on the internet and the lies you tell yourself? Between a prayer and a wish? Between a world and an operating system? Between a spider and a web?

The mind contains worlds, and the world contains minds.

What is SKEW?

SKEW is an anthology of science fiction that hits directly at the weak point between perception and reality, busting it wide open and showing you the insides. The anthology includes nine stories (plus microfictions) as well as a story-telling game that you can use to create your own stories.

SKEW is the brainchild of Ben Lehman (Polaris, Bliss Stage, The Drifter's Escape). The editor is Isabel Cooper Kunkle (Englefield Series, Hickey of the Beast), and the graphic designer is Joshua AC Newman (Shock: Human Contact, Mobile Frame Zero).

The project is a spiritual cousin of Joshua's Shock:

About the Stories

8ooei3aaia33ai8, Erik Amundsen
aa3eai883o ei8ooo3388 - That's to make the webs. oi88e3e38aa - That's to crawl. Pay attention, this is science.

Total Profile Reboot, Dallas Taylor
It started with small things, things everybody did: an airbrushed profile pic; a few pounds photoshopped into the background; padding his friend count with bars and restaurants and friending friend collectors to make it look like he was more popular than he really was.

Footnotes, Scotto Moore
A recovered sliver of text from the long-lost Capture Book, a seminal text in Earthropology.

Cold, Hard Reality and a String of Nonsense, Lisa Lindeman
If you can wish for anything can you get what you want?

Reality 2.0, Ian Creasey
A few of the features you can expect from our new version of reality.

Sisyphus Explains, Sara Amis
Up and down are a matter of perspective.

Spy Drug, Greg Stolze
A drug that turns you into a spy. Relationship problems.

As They Get Warmer, They Give a Little, Caren Gussoff
How could he possibly be expected to resist exploiting this code vulnerability when the possibilities all lay before him, waiting?

Feet Bare on the Ground, Sara Amis
A half-fallen half-angel and a drum to hide her heart in.

Microfiction by Brendan Adkins
Texts from the future.

About the Game

The eponymous game contained in SKEW is a cross between a pass-around story, a role playing game, and a fiction writing exercise. Using a series of prompts and triggers, it guides you and a group of friends in making an expressionist, ecstatic science fiction story like those contained in the book. The game takes about an hour to play, and is suitable for both parties and smaller gatherings.

About the Publication

The stories are written, edited, and bought. The game is designed, played, and revised. SKEW will be released by year's end one way or another.

We are doing this kickstarter to raise money for a print version of the anthology and gauge interest in the project. If we can raise enough money, we can afford a very nice, spiffy coffee-table presentation of the book. If we can raise less money, we will release the book as a simple paperback. If we have an enormous response, we'll be able to produce more anthologies, with either more stories (and non-texts) in the same genre or a similar anthological presentation for a different genre.

eBooks will also be available.

Note on Author's Rights

Despite being an amateur anthology, Skew has paid its authors and editor professional rates. Authors also retain all rights to their work, in keeping with industry standards for fiction.

Note to Booksellers

Due to recent changes in Kickstarter policy, we are unable to offer bookstore / retailer discounts. However, these discounts are available. Please contact me (taogames@gmail.com) to place an order.
