I am a designer maker working with print and weave and using sustainable and ethically produced materials.
In the summer of 2017 I will cycle solo form Yorkshire to the Isle of Skye, documenting my journey through photography and drawing. The images created during my journey will be the foundation for a collection of Textiles that I will create using print and weave. The journey will be a secular pilgrimage, exploring the human connection with nature and a sense of meaning within the wild.
The journey is around 500 miles on cycle routes. I will camp and every 4 nights I will stay in a hostel or Bed and Breakfast. I will cycle for 30 miles each day so that I have some time to draw and take photographs, in total the journey should take 17 days. I intend to stay on Skye for five days after completing my journey, continuing with my drawings and photography and researching local natural dyes.
The costs for my journey will include some cycle and camping gear, accommodation, and some art supplies. I have managed to source some of the gear already. I have not included the price of food or additional costs as I am intending to raise half of the money and to self fund the rest of my project. Here is a breakdown of costs for what I need to raise-
Accommodation during journey. Camping £15 per night (most campsites charge per pitch not per person)- Hostel/B&B- £30 per night. Accommodation on Skye- £30 per night. Total accommodation- £435
Sleeping Bag- £50
Waterproof Cycle Bags and rack for bike- £150
Art Supplies- sketchbooks, paints, pens and inks- £80
Total Costs- £715
Risks and challenges
Due to sometimes extreme weather conditions in Scotland, it might take me longer than my expected time frame to complete my journey or I may need to change the dates but I will certainly complete the journey this summer.
As the outcomes from my journey will be creative and I am considering environmental and ethical impact, it might be that the rewards are slightly different, i.e. the screen print might be block printed instead if this process is more environmentally sound or I might use Linen instead of silk to print the scarf if the material is more sustainable.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
