Validation is the story of Ally, a transgender nerd girl doing her best to live a fulfilling life featuring RPG nights with friends, conventions, and lots of dinosaurs. Starring in this delightful slice-of-life webcomic is Ally; Roxie, her punk best friend and fellow trans girl; Albert, Kyle, and Rolando, her RPG-playing crew; and of course, Mr. Dino, her faithful dinosaur companion (he’s only hiding as a stuffed animal to conceal his true terror).
One day, I thought, “What if these characters were put on buttons?” And that’s why we’re here today.
Hello, I’m Kelci Crawford, the comic artist and half of the creative team behind Validation. The other half is Christian Beranek, writer and Patreon Page runner for Validation.
“Wait!” You might be thinking. “If Validation has a Patreon page, why are you here on KickStarter?”
Well, Patreon helps us consistently pay for our overhead – the bills that keep the roof over our heads, as it were. We’re on KickStarter to get some funding for a one-time project: BUTTONS!
Yes, we’re looking to get a 5-button set made featuring the stars of Validation, so that we have a little something to give to readers AND something to share at our convention appearances until we get this webcomic ready for its impending book release. So if you have a punk jacket or a backpack that needs some decorating, I hope you support us!
“So you want to get some buttons made. Is that why the funding goal is set so low?”
Yep. That’s also why we set the fundraiser to last only 7 days.
“A 7-day KickStarter? Are you MAD??”
No. I was inspired by ComixLaunch, a podcast for indie comics-makers who use KickStarter. They brought up the idea of a 7-day KickStarter, and I thought it was a cool concept to try.
So here’s what we’re looking to cover with this funding:
- $25 to get 100 buttons made
- $50 for shipping to the backers
- $25 for emergencies (like KickStarter’s fee, shipping we may have missed, etc)
We have rewards ranging from the 5-piece button set to custom art commissions. So if you want to help make this project happen, check out the rewards on the side bar to see what works for you.
If you’re broke, tell your friends about this KickStarter! Spread the word and let our fellow punks and comics-lovers know that this is happening only for 7 days.
Thank you for reading!
You. Are. Awesome.
Risks and challenges
The biggest risk for this project is underestimating the cost of that dreaded snake known as SHIPPING. Right now I have shipping costs estimated at $5 per backer (because of cushy envelopes to send the buttons in, and trying to make back cost for those cushy envelopes). That should be enough to cover it, but that’s another reason why there’s a little extra added to the KickStarter goal – just in case we underestimate how much it really is.
The other big risk is the button-maker and how quickly he can get the buttons done and shipped over to me first, before I mail them out to backers. Well, I’ve ordered buttons from this guy twice before (to print buttons for Thoughtful Dinosaur, which turned out AWESOME both times). He’s fast and he’s very good. I can rely on him to get these buttons done.
If we don’t meet our goal, we’ll be sad. But if we reach our goal and can reach to our stretch goals, that would be awesome! We have stretch goals in mind – we’ll announce them if/when we meet this initial goal.
Since this is a 7-day campaign, we run the real risk of peeps not knowing about the campaign until after it’s over. That’s why we need YOUR help to spread the word. Christian and I are only two people. But if you help get the word out through social media and telling your friends, we’ll be that much more likely to succeed.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
