Becky endures another mundane shift at the Coffee Shop until a series of customers force her to contemplate ditching the job forever. The film attempts to address the feelings of alienation felt by minimum wage workers in coffee shops. Customer service is one of many minimum wage jobs that require constant face to face interaction. For an alienated and disengaged employee, confrontations such as these after a long period can become repetitive, boring, and analytical.
- Awards which are presented to young filmmakers are enormously beneficial to the exposure of everybody involved with the project. Funds are now being raised to enter the film into a selected number of festivals. This would not be possible without your support. With a budget of £1324.47, Inferno Switch Films was able to fund the short film.
- Actors expenses - Paying actors is always a valued part of the budget, and respecting their professionalism is crucial to receiving brilliant performances. The actors that we worked with are hardworking, enthusiastic, and charismatic on set.
- Council Permission - We payed £330 to the Cornwall Council for permission to film on location in Penryn, Falmouth and Constantine Bay. It was essential that the whole production was professional and covered from various angles so that the shoot had limited ways to go south
- Catering - Catering was provided for the cast and crew so that energy levels were consistently positive. The catering was an effective necessity, especially when shoots lasted for 7 hours +.
- Insurances - Particular employers liability insurances and public liability insurances were secured from a external company in order to protect cast, crew and the locations in which we filmed.
- Training - A certain amount of training such as First Aid At Work was required to film a special scene.
- Transport - The hiring of taxis and private drivers was essential due to the large amount of kit that had to be transported from location to location. Without the transport, there would be nothing to capture the drama with.
Megan Tremethick as Becky
Megan Tremethick is an actor born in Cornwall, England. From an early age she performed in plays around Cornwall before finding a love of screen acting. In 2016 she was cast as the lead role in the short film 'Chalk' by the BFI Film Academy, and has gone on to work in short films such as 'Meeko', 'Physical Education', 'Lillie' and 'The Red Telephone'.
Rory Wilton as Baxter
After an early career as a fine artist and illustrator, Rory Wilton graduated from The Hub Theatre School in 1992. Later that year he went on to join Bedlam Theatre Company of Cornwall, of which he became Co-Artistic Director with Emma Spurgin Hussey in 1994, nationally touring new writing productions. He also followed an independent stage career working with Cornish Theatre Collective, Cube Essential Theatre, Hall for Cornwall, and Windswept Productions. He started working in film and TV during the late 1990's, and joined the cast of Doc Martin (2004) (new series to start filming 2015) in 2009 as regular character Chippy Miller. He can be seen in UK cinemas in the award-winning The Fold (2013), directed by John Jencks; in the US in the soon to be released Siren Song (2016), directed by Benjamin Smart; and on ABC networks new US comedy series Galavant (2015), directed by Chris Koch and written by Dan Fogelman; and is filming (2014) Mammoth Screen's adaptation of Poldark (2015) for the BBC, directed by Ed Bazelgette and William McGregor. Rory is a strong supporter of emerging talent, co-running several Bedlam Youth Theatre Companies in Cornwall, and was a Director in Residence at Cornwall Youth Theatre for nine years. He is a keen cook, musician and artist.

Emma Spurgin Hussey is an actress, known for All in the Valley (2014), Coffee Chains (2017) and Poldark (2015).
Tim Cartwright as Old Man
Tim's formative years were spent in Newlyn, Cornwall. His first role was at the tender age of 16 - a walk-on part in the 1970s BBC production of Poldark. Since then he has been in a range of theatre productions whilst holding down a 'normal' job. In 2016, he decided to pursue a full-time career as an actor in film and TV after being cast as 'Bors' in the feature film 'Mordred'.
- Our dedicated crew worked on this seven day shoot for free. We work for experience, credentials and for the love and passion of film-making.
Louis Dalton - Writer/Director/Editor/ Assistant Producer
Louis Dalton is the writer, director, editor and assistant producer of Coffee Chains. He has also written a feature length screenplay titled A Ribbon in the Wind which was a 2016 Screenplay Competition finalist. Louis wants to learn relentlessly about film making process by waking up early, staying up late, annihilating tasks and repeating the process. Louis has studied film for the past five years; two years in A-level, and three years at undergraduate study. Along the way, his interests have been grasped by filmmakers such as Ken Loach and David Fincher.
Lauren Carter - Producer
Lauren Carter is a short film producer who specialises in organisational skills. She was brought on to this project to coordinate the production and to ensure that principal photography started at the right time. She took a supervisory role in maintaining the legalities of the production; Lauren also ensured that all risk assessments were completed. Lauren has also completed many other jobs on film projects including makeup, lighting, camera operations and floor management during live stream performances around the Cornwall area. Lauren volunteered at a local polytechnic cinema and Cornish film festivals. Lauren has an interest in cinema broadcasts, radio and event cinema.
Nicolas Clarke - Assistant Producer
Slightly Polynesian, Nic grew up in both Bournemouth, UK and a idyllic village in Cyprus. Nic is a producer and writer, with sights set on directing. His interests lie primarily in social realism, drama and documentary. Hobbies include: photography, maintaining decent facial hair and boogying to is first loves, Hip Hop and Grime. He has been an assistant producer on the film, working primarily on the films online presence, on set photography and supervising the casting process. He joined the project because he enjoyed the themes of patronising customers, which were relatable due to his own employment history in the service industry.
Israfil Jauffur - Director of Photography
Israfil Jauffur was raised by Wolves in Epping Forrest. He got his first taste of cinema when he was got a telewest box in his bedroom because kept playing knock down ginger on his neighbours. His earliest memories were of Donnie Darko, A Clockwork Orange, Taxi Driver, Dirty Harry, and Kindergarten Cop. His unorthodox method of eating the shooting script so he never loses it has become a staple of his work ethic. He can hold two blackmagic 2.5k with mounts and two Manfrotto cinema tripods on his person standing erect for long durations. He mastered cinematography from staring directly at the sun for months at a time. It is rumoured that his left eye is made of lens so he can see with his mind's eye.
Andrew Howes - Director of Photography
Born and bred in rural Gloucestershire, natural light and rolling fields are his Home with Cows being his only friends growing up, he thought the best use of his time was to photograph them, Andrew breathes cinema, He picked up his first Camera at nine years old and hasn't put it down since. He studied Media Production at college then specialized in Cinematography at University studying Television after taking inspiration from films by Nicolas Winding Refn and Christopher Nolan. He now spends his time Working on his next project, if not the one after that.
Toby Cook - Sound Location Mixer
Toby Cook recorded most of the audio and is working on the post production sound for the film. Toby appreciated the opportunity to gain further experience in sound recording, his interests include sound recording, sound editing and sound theory. He was also excited by the more surreal aspects of the script and the ambition.
Dom Philpot - Assistant Sound Recordist
Dom Philpot is the Assistant Sound Recordist, and this is his second sound recordist placement. Dom is more familiar with editing and visual effects, and appreciates the opportunity to expand his skills.
Britanny Mcnellis - Special Effects Make-up
Britanny Mcnellis is a special effects makeup artist, She has recently been studying to get her MA at Falmouth University, and was most recently in the make-up department on Jamie Adams' latest improvised feature film Songbird. She was also Director of Photography and Head of Special Effects on Summoning, written and directed by Natalys Willcox. She specializes in special effects make-up, receiving her training at Metropolitan State university of Denver in the USA and with Neil Gorton in the UK. She was recently invited to film and edit a behind-the-scenes film about Gorton Studio training courses. And has a passion for both special effects and camera work.

Risks and challenges
The only risk involved in this project now stands before us: either not being accepted into the festivals that we enter to, or not winning them.
It has long been known that festivals offer a pathway to success for independent filmmakers such as ourselves. We believe that if we put ourselves out there into the festivals, the worst thing that can happen is rejection.
