Every city has a sound.
Our mission is to document and share the distinct musical cultures of American cities.
We will spend one month in each city, living out of the AMPmobile (our van converted into a studio), documenting festivals, popular venues, street performers, and more. We will produce videos, photographs, and the AMP Blog to tell our story. Our content will be shared using social media.
Everything will be available, for free, on our webpage:
We are raising funds for our first installment - Nashville, New Orleans, and Austin TX. We will use the money for our vehicle expenses, additional recording equipment, and for baseline living expenses. We hope that merchandise sales and sponsorships will allow us to become self-sustainable.
Our content will take four forms:
Videos - To make you feel like you are there. "Welcome to Nashville," "SxSW," "Street Performers of New Orleans," etc.
Photography - Concerts, Portraits, Cityscapes, Behind-the-scenes, etc. to give you a closer look.
The AMP Blog - To chronicle our adventures and insights.
Social Media - We will connect you to our journey, in real-time, using Facebook, Twitter, Instragram, etc.
In the future, we hope to cover more cities, building a rich resource and community for music lovers across America.
Your pledge would make all of this possible. Please check out our pledge incentives and join this movement to spread the love of music across the country! If you would rather not pledge, please consider sharing this project with your networks.
If you know any music lovers in these cities that may be interested in talking to us, please connect us! We may also need an occasional couch to surf on.
Feel free to email us any time at info (at) americanmusicproject.org.
Welcome to the American Music Project.
Risks and challenges
1. Surviving on the road.
To stretch our budget, we plan to live and work out of our converted van. This type of lifestyle has its risks.
I have traveled to over a dozen countries on a shoestring budget, developing a safe and steady traveler mentality over the years. Our safety, and the security of the AMPmobile, will be top priority. I have logged thousands of miles driving across the USA, camping and living out of my car, so I know what it is like. I have never been pulled over, been in any sort of accident, or even gotten a parking ticket.
Marie and I also have contacts in each of these cities; places to recharge if things get hairy out there.
2. Finding and delivering the content. What if we can't find any quality music?
We have chosen to go to Austin during SXSW, and New Orleans during Jazzfest - when these cities are positively exploding with music. We are in the process of applying for press passes to these events, which would give us unfettered access to the best music these cities have to offer.
We are also using the free iPhone app Timbre, which compiles and previews all of the live shows happening in any city. - https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/timbre/id533493750
Then, to capture the magic! We are setting aside nearly $2,000 for additional video and audio recording equipment. Marie Sullivan, our lead videographer, has produced award-winning media, including a documentary on dumpster diving. Eric has been writing, taking photographs, recording live sound, and exploring for years.
3. Living together in a van for three months?
Marie and I share a positive mentality about life. We have been friends for years, and are confident that no personal issues will inhibit our ability to complete this project.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
