Cthulhu: Strange Aeons takes the tropes of Lovecraftian horror and transplants them into a hard, gritty science fiction setting. The two initial books, the Investigator’s Guide and the Keeper’s Guide, define the setting and include everything you need to advance your Call of Cthulhu game into the far future. Subsequent books will explore the horrors of new worlds and the dark places between the stars.
Cthulhu: Strange Aeons is fully licensed from Chaosium and is based on the 7th Edition of the Call of Cthulhu game system. Call of Cthulhu is a trademark of Chaosium Inc. and is used with permission.
Cthulhu: Strange Aeons is set in the 22nd century. The setting posits what one potential future might look like, including its technology, society, and culture, by extrapolating “bleeding-edge” research and speculation ripped from today’s headlines. We are committed to keeping the science plausible and plan to stick to the truly monstrous and alien entities of the Mythos by drawing inspiration from films such as Event Horizon, Alien, and Predator, along with the original works of H.P. Lovecraft and others.
We have assembled some of the best writers of not only the venerable Call of Cthulhu game but the entire RPG industry. Insane scribes including Scott Glancy, Rob Schwalb, Oscar Rios, Jeffrey Moeller, and Sean Molley will bring this game to life. Their mad ramblings, combined with the terrifying visions of our fantastic artists, such as Richard Luong, will add a new dimension of excitement to your Call of Cthulhu game.
Your generous support of this project will allow us to develop, write, illustrate, and publish two full-color hardback books: the Investigator’s Guide and the Keeper’s Guide. These two core books (along with the 7th Edition CoC rules) contain everything you need to play Cthulhu: Strange Aeons.
Cthulhu: Strange Aeons - The Investigator’s Guide features a stunning cover by Richard Luong and is planned as a 160 page book. Within its pages you will discover new occupations, backgrounds, skills, and equipment from the world of the late 22nd Century. Investigators in a Strange Aeons campaign must be prepared to face not only the cosmic horror of the unknown, but also the day-to-day rigors of space travel and the hazards of unknown worlds. Backgrounds include various national Armed Forces, UN Special Services attachés, Miskatonic University Advisors, Corporate Operatives, and many more. The Investigator’s Guide also helps players get in the mindset of the Strange Aeons setting, including information about the 22nd century that all characters should know.
Cthulhu: Strange Aeons - The Keeper’s Guide also features a thrilling cover by Richard Luong and is planned as a 256 page book. This blasphemous tome of forbidden knowledge lays bare the secrets of human colonies lost after the Storm of 2104, provides rules for advanced options such as allowing Android/Synthetic investigators, describes various cults and secret organizations, and explains how the investigators might find and use (or be used by) ancient xeno-technologies. The Keeper’s Guide also includes a gazetteer of space, including a variety of planets for your investigators to discover (using the current database of actual extrasolar planetary formations that have been discovered), as well as a simple system for generating your own planets. No campaign would be complete without adversaries, and the Keeper’s Guide includes enough vile xenomorphs and madmen to have your players running for their lives (or the closest mind-wiping station). The Keeper’s Guide also includes two scenarios so that you can get a sense for how to present the universe and the Mythos, and dozens of story seeds to help you launch your own Strange Aeons campaign.
To give you a better grasp of what the world of Cthulhu: Strange Aeons looks and feels like, we have commissioned three pieces of flash fiction that will be released as UPDATES during this campaign. The first piece will be released as UPDATE #1.
The $60,000 goal for this campaign represents the minimum funding needed to bring Cthulhu: Strange Aeons to you in the form of the two core books. Meeting this goal allows us to pay for writing, art, layout, printing, and distribution of the Investigator’s Guide and the Keeper’s Guide in both full-color hardback and PDF. As we achieve various Stretch Goals, we will be able to extend the line with additional sourcebooks, scenario anthologies, and even a full-length campaign. However, the two core books (along with a copy of the 7th Edition CoC rules) contain everything you need to play.
Initially, we considered offering the project as two 128-page black-and-white softback books and adding full color, hardback binding, additional page count, and other enhancements as Stretch Goals. This version of Strange Aeons would have a much lower initial funding goal, but the truth is that we didn’t feel we could do justice to our vision in that form. We would rather make the best possible version of this game or not make it at all. You deserve nothing less than a first-class presentation.
Our $60,000 funding goal breaks down roughly as follows:
As you can see from the chart, every penny of the funding goal goes towards making the two core books a reality, with the highest production values, and to pay our writers, artists, and other professionals a proper rate for their work. Printing in full color with hardback binding is expensive, but worth it. Kickstarter and payment-processing fees and US domestic shipping costs also take a chunk out of the budget.
LOCKED: $65,000 - Digital Keeper's Screen
Our first Stretch Goal for Cthulhu: Strange Aeons is a PDF of the Keeper's Screen with all the pertinent charts and rules to aid the Keeper in running a Cthulhu: Strange Aeons scenario or campaign.
LOCKED: $77,000 - Abyss of Madness
The second Stretch Goal is a scenario compilation tentatively called Abyss of Madness. Although the Keeper’s Guide includes sample scenarios and story seeds, we all know that you can never have too many full-length adventures, especially for horror RPGs. Strange Aeons isn’t a game about kicking down the door, killing the monsters, and taking their stuff (although sometimes the monsters kick down your door, paralyze you, ignore your stuff, implant their eggs into your brain, and wipe your memory, leaving you with a splitting headache and a vague sense that something is terribly wrong).
Our goal with the first adventure book is to let investigators explore some of the most well-known places in the Cthulhu Mythos, such as Yuggoth and Carcosa. These scenarios will be stand-alone, but you could of course run them as part of an overarching campaign.
We will add more Stretch Goals to the list as the campaign progresses. Join us as we plumb the stars for their terrible secrets and contend with the terrifying struggle that humans face in a Cosmos that is utterly indifferent to our strife and suffering.
UPDATED: I understand that shipping costs for those outside of the US has been a sore point for many. As someone who lives in the US and has ordered quite a few books from the UK, I understand and sympathize. However, I have good news for our overseas patrons!
Having just concluded negotiations with an overseas fulfillment house, I can now announce that shipping rates outside of the US has been drastically reduced. Shipping charges will still be charged when we are closer to having the books in hand, but as of now international shipping will follow the cost structure below.
Additionally, since we are paying for domestic shipping ($4.80), we will give international customers the same benefit and reduce the shipping by that amount.
$24.45 - $4.80 = $19.65 Canada, South and Central America
$23.65 - $4.80 = $18.85 Europe
$26.85 - $4.80 = $22.05 Asia & Oceania (Australia)
Again, Please DO NOT add funds for international shipping to your Kickstarter pledge. We’ll bill and collect for international shipping after the campaign is over.
Risks and challenges
Paradigm Concepts, Inc. has been publishing RPG books since 2000. In addition to our long track record in the industry, we have run three previous successful Kickstarters. Two of those are completely fulfilled and we are in the process of fulfilling the third. We know what it takes to create top-quality RPG products and bring them to market. For this project we have assembled an experienced team of writers, artists and editors. The primary risk is that one or more of these contributors may be devoured by xenomorphs, succumb to insanity, and/or become lost in time and space. However, we believe that the size of the team is sufficient that those of us who survive will be able to complete the project.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
