About this project
What is this?
It's a desk, or a standing desk, or an easel, or a drafting table. The vertical mast supports the desk and shelf, stands at seven and a half feet tall, and it can easily be mounted to the wall or freestanding. The shelf is handy for holding your tools, books and speakers, and measures 40" x 8". The desk top is a spacious 30" x 40", perfect for your computer and large projects.
Who's this for?
Creative people. You do different things all the time. Projects develop in unforeseen ways. This single piece of furniture can accommodate a huge variety of creative processes. I use it to paint, create layout drawings, wire electronics, carve architectural ornaments, and as a computer desk. The shelf is handy for books and my stereo speakers. It's great for the home or office. The desk is portable enough to take to a job site for architects and supervisors.
What we did?
I originally conceived the design for the Frey Desk after the birth of my first daughter. At that time, I began spending big chunks of time at home away from my studio, and I was in the middle of a carving project. As I carved at home, hunched over the kitchen table, sewing table or garden table, the pain in my back told me that I needed an ergonomic workspace.
I then began the design for the Frey desk. It took a couple of years and a number of prototypes that resulted in something much more useful than the original intent. I now use the desk in my studio as well as at home. I've given out a version to an artist friend. Through these beta versions, I've made a couple of design improvements and created a very useful product.
How will we make it?
Part of the Frey Desk will be produced at a local CNC shop in Brooklyn, NY. This shop has produced models and prototypes for me over the last five years. The remainder of the Frey Desk will be produced in my shop in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. We've tiered the rewards schedule to accommodate production. The outlet shelf and the acanthus leaf will also be produced in my shop.
What we will do with funding?
Everyone has their strengths and their weaknesses. For me, production is no problem. My weakness is presentation and sales (I cannot bring myself to even properly name the desk, let alone sell it). With funding, we will create a suitable retail website and package our advertisement.
Rewards (in order of $$)
Even though the Frey Desk flat packs nicely, the tall vertical masts make for an oversized parcel. The cost of shipping oversized parcels varies greatly from region to region. In order that each backer pays the minimum in shipping, each backer will pay their shipper directly. The desk will ship out of a commercial building in Brooklyn, NY 11222. The desk (option A) will be packed into two boxes estimated at 91" x 10" x 7" x 40lbs and 41" x 30" x 7" x 40lbs. We will package and load the parcel onto your shipper's vehicle during regular business hours. Local pick-up is great, if you can manage it.
The Frey Desk is a modular furniture system. Other options and add-ons are in development. The speed with which they are realized is relative to the funding of Option A and the email response to this campaign. Let me know if there is something that you would like to see as an option in the Frey Desk. Here are a couple of options that I have in either drawing, alpha or beta design stages. If there is interest I will add rewards during this campaign.
- Youth Version (smaller footprint, slightly smaller height)
- Architect's version (larger footprint with adjustable table to hold full sized 36" x 48" architect's drawings
- Painter's version- Traditional sliding block easel. (similar to the adjustable desk, but with an easel that holds a stretched canvas) includes a smaller shelf designed especially to hang inside the easel.
- Computer version- fixed desk (does not tilt) with sliding keyboard shelf. Includes three shelves.
- Additional shelves
- Adjustable Work Lights
- Wire clips (for organizing cables)
Risks and challenges
I've worked in production for 10+ years. While that experience is helpful in manufacturing the Frey Desk, i also understand that production, particularly novel production, has a certain amount of unforeseen risk. (For instance, my previous shop was flooded with 5 feet of water during hurricane Sandy). In light of the risk, the Frey Desk is made of common materials available from multiple, reliable distributors. There are no unique parts to be sourced. Also, the fabrication processes do not require specialized skills. This will allow us to ramp up production to meet demands.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
