My name is Matthew Payne. I'm an independent recording artist who records under the name: The River Has Many Voices. Why? Because "the river is within us; the sea is all about us."
My goal is to release an EP entitled: Division. Why? Because that's the street in Portland where it was recorded. It's a collection of some songs I was playing live then. I recorded them in one take, guitar, microphone, and harmonica in some cases. The studio was Jackpot! Recording. Other musicians to have been in those walls: REM, Eddie Vedder, Elliott Smith, M. Ward, etc.
Why Kickstarter? It's all about you, the fan, making the album. I put up the money to record the EP, but need help with the overall costs (mastering, mixing, publicity). In exchange, I offer a whole host of other rewards - b-side(s), demo(s), cover song of your choice, photographs, a short film project, etc. Direct capitalism. You buy the product. ALL procedes go to the music. No middle man/label in between.
This money is a result of a very simple calculation:
$600 : Mixing
$600 : Mastering
$2,100 : Publicity - Radio campaign for current album, TV/Film pitches
$600.00 : Album Pressings
As you see, the total is more than I'm asking. I'm saving up as well in hopes to contribute more :)
NOTE: Your cards will not be charged until the final day of the 30 day period. All you are doing right now is pledging. As I'm sure you know, if the goal of $3,000 is NOT reached in 30 days, none of your cards will be charged, and I will not get any of the money for the project. With the right amounts of enthusiasm and support, however, we can hopefully avoid that.
Please pass this page on to all of your friends who support independent music and who want to make a difference. The music industry nowadays depends on you, the fans, more than it ever has.
I'm excited about sharing my songs with you,
Risks and challenges
Digital copies will be available no matter what before March, presumably. Physical CDs require a pressing and that sometimes takes time, depending on the manufacturer. But, everything should be good to go before mid-March. If there are certain rewards in your contributor package such as a filming or cover song, or anything that requires more labor from myself, I fully intend to honor the deadline. However, sometimes life gets in the way. If it does, you will be notified of slight delays.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
