Sostanza: new substance from Torino
Not a pencil, nor a lead holder, it’s Sostanza
The pencil is a nice object: it’s simple, warm and reminds us of childhood, but has a short life-span. You can sharpen it until it becomes no longer usable.
The lead holder, on the other hand, is reloadable, but consists of many pieces that get easily lost or broken.
Sostanza is warm and natural. It is a wooden pencil that will never end: when the graphite gets consumed, just inserting a new one will give the object another life.
It consists of two elements: the light wooden body that houses the mine, and the external ring that slides towards the top to lock it. The mine is an easily found product: you pick the firmness you prefer and sharpen it by using the sharpener or rubbing it on sandpaper. Intuitive and easy to use, Sostanza proves how a simple object can be beautiful and work well with very little.
Sostanza is an handmade object, produced in small scale and entirely in Italy, designed by Sotterranea Officina Sperimentale design studio. It was designed in Torino, where it was also researched on and prototyped. The woodturning is carried on by a center in Vicenza specialized in precision works, while the silver rings are produced by goldsmith laboratories in Valenza with the technique of casting, and then finished by hand. Sostanza is available in five essences in their natural colors and each wood is paired with a different finishing of the ring, giving it a precise aesthetic character.
The pear tree has European origins and grows all around the Mediterranean sea. It’s a strong essence from the broadleaf family. Its fibers are thick giving it high density and resistance to deformation. The silver ring is casted and then brushed and burnished to give it a dull gray aspect.
The mahogany, which grows exclusively in Central America between Mexico and Amazonia, is a strong dense essence with a reddish shade. The silver ring is casted, and the finishing is applied by coating, a polished protective substance, with a dark green color.
Eastern black walnut originates from North America, but has been imported in Europe through the years, where is now available throughout the continent. The wood appears brown with dark grains. The silver ring is casted and then refined by polished grey rhodium plating.
Ebony grows in Sub-Saharan Africa and Madagascar. Contrary to popular belief the dark color is not due to the tree itself but to the slow action of a fungus that changes the color of the shaft from brown to black. The silver ring is casted and then refined by satin white rhodium plating.
Amaranth, which grows in the American tropical area, presents a grayish color when freshly cut, but it naturally shifts to its violet color with aging, oxidation and UV exposure. The silver ring is casted and then finished with a polished rose plating.
Why Sostanza? (it means Substance)
It is an Italian name for an Italian product, made by beautiful natural materials. Sostanza is a useful product, simple and synthetic. Its functioning is elemental but not taken for granted, the shape is reduced to a minimum by eliminating anything superfluous. Similarly in the writing, drawing or in music composition, the visual representation is a symbolic synthesis wich guide us to the real meaning. Communication is a matter of Sostanza.
Help us get Sostanza on the market: it is light and immediately sparks your creativity, it has a very addictive effect but luckily never ends. To really understand how special Sostanza is you have to try it!

Risks and challenges
Sostanza has already been tested and tried by the public during some promotional events in which it was presented. Your contribute will help us start the production of the pieces. We have already formulated the deals with the artisans that will aid us in the different processes. The times for the processing and bonding of wood are long and, given the great artisanal component of the product, in case of a significally larger number of orders from the foreseen objective, there could be some delay in the shipments. Every lead holder is refined by hand, so the pieces could undergo small variations in size and color.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
