I have been in touch with the publisher of the book, and this sounds like good news : (everything below is their response to my inquiry)

Thank you for your message and your support of the book! After a very small 1st print run, Lost Word Press is working on a larger printing.

Kickstarter backers will be the first to receive books from this printing. We are planning to have the books ready to ship in October.

Terry is about to send a message to all backers. He will be asking for shipping address confirmation to be sent to (this address).

So, send me your address, and we will send your book as soon as we get it from the printer.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

      Kind regards,

      Co-founder, Lost Word Press

I heard that the book is finally out and that there are launch events - I look forward to getting an update here soon, and to finally seeing the book.

The latest thing I've heard was that Terry told someone he couldn't find anybody to do the layout for less than $10,000. No idea when that was said. It could easily have been a couple years ago. In any case, I find that figure very hard to believe and it obviously doesn't preclude an update or refund.

I'm done with Kickstarter. Artists cannot treat customers this way. No updates, no clue - what is happening ? Terry - please give us an update.

I've been going through other kickstarters I have funded, and I am reaching the point where I won't be doing it again.

I have backed 7 projects. One did not get funding. One has successfully shipped to me (Amanda Palmer).
One is still in active progress with many updates (Hybrid Vigor).

This and another one have not shipped 2 years after funding. The lack of updates on this project does knock my confidence, and also makes me less likely to fund other projects in this way. One other is 9 months beyond original date, and the last one has completed and has shipped all bar a handful - unfortunately for me, my copy has not yet shipped, and communication from that team seems to go quiet.

Terry - please give us an update, or you will be the last leg in me deciding that Kickstarter is no longer a viable way for me to support new art.

Is a creator legally obligated to fulfill the promises of their project?

Yeah, it's looking like this ain't gonna happen, isn't it? Kickstarter *does* say that creators are legally obligated to fulfill rewards or refund money. But it's not clear how that process works. Surely the backers don't have to hire lawyers.

Kickstarter's Terms of Use require creators to fulfill all rewards of their project or refund any backer whose reward they do not or cannot fulfill. We crafted these terms to create a legal requirement for creators to follow through on their projects, and to give backers a recourse if they don't. We hope that backers will consider using this provision only in cases where they feel that a creator has not made a good faith effort to complete the project and fulfill.

Perhaps we should all find a way to get refunds?

      Say it ain't so, Terry!
I've been wondering what was going on with this project for a while now and it does appear that we've been duped. If you're not going to use my contribution for the book, I'm broke and could certainly put it to good use. An update would be nice.

      Hi everyone:

It's now 2 (!) after this project was funded and the book has still not been published as far as I know. I have emailed Terry several times (via his Kickstarter and MySpace accounts) , but have not received any reply for over a year. His last email correspondence with me is reproduced below. Terry last official communication was 2 years ago. I guess it's now safe to conclude that our financial contribution can be considered as lost.

      Hello Hans,

Sorry for so few updates. Here's where I'm at:
The text is with the editor. She and I are about halfway through with final editing.
Just recently made a deal with a graphic designer to layout the interior of the book. That has been a difficult part of this project because I want it to look special and unique.
Still have a few photos left to buy and am looking for a cover artist although I may have actually found an artist who can create the kind of original illustration that I want.
All should be finished and ready for the publisher by October [2011]
Will be working on an e-book version next fall.
If you have any questions please send me an email anytime. And thank you again for the support!

Hi Terry - it's been quite a while since we last heard anything. I'd really appreciate knowing where you are with this, and what the timescales are for publication.

Hi, Terry. What's the update regarding your book?

    12. on

Hi Terry, how is the book going? Nearly finished? I'm beginning to regret I ever funded this. This is taking much too long.
