Finding Our Sound
After the release of our first EP, Fallen Stars, we had a few shifts in our line-up with the departure of our previous keyboardist, and we've also been struggling to find a full time bassist. An unexpected result of that shakeup was that the core of our band, Cure for Gravity, Chris Gamper [drums, percussion], Dave Walcott [guitars, vocals], and Joe Markert [vocals, guitars, keys]) ] revamped and consolidated our voice as a trio. The songs in our upcoming EP, Killing for the Queen, reflect the deepening and refinement of that new sound.
Putting it Down
For the past six months we’ve been working on and off at 25th Street Recording (Oakland, CA) and Decibel Studios (San Francisco, CA), tracking, producing and mixing our new EP. We're a ways off from realizing our vision but you can get a preview of our new sound and new album on our SoundCloud page: http://www.soundcloud.com/cure-for-gravity
One of the rewards of contributing to our kickstarter is that you can get early downloads of all the additional tracks as they become available.
In addition to creating our next EP, we’ve also been supporting it by doing several mini west coast tours this past summer and fall. In July, we were invited to perform at the 2014 Underground Music Showcase in Denver, CO. We also headed down to LA and played at the House of Blues in November. We're aiming high and also hoping to hit South By Southwest in spring of 2015.
To get all of this done right, and to gear up to start playing out of town more often, we’ve put together this KickStarter to help raise the funds we need to realize the vision of the EP. Your donations will help cover our tour costs, which include a new trailer for our gear, and the other expenses related to releasing our EP, including studio costs, artwork, and packaging.
Our target is $6,000 to cover these remaining expenses, and if we can meet this goal, we plan to finish the EP in January/February of 2015.
As we put the finishing touches on our Killing for the Queen EP, feel free to download and check out our last EP, Fallen Stars:
We appreciate you taking the time to read through all this, and hope you will consider a donation to support us in bringing our creative efforts more widely and visibly into the world!
OH, and we promise the album will be a lot better quality than our KickStarter video!
Risks and challenges
When do we get the goods?
We don't anticipate any delays in completing production, but we do want to be clear about our intentions and plans so you can understand how we'll be spending your money and when you can expect to see the return on your investment.
We anticipate finishing the EP by February of 2015 if we can raise the $6,000 that we need to cover our costs. We will begin delivering some of the key rewards at that time, including our private listening parties, house parties, bar tours, guitar lessons, custom signed artwork, etc.
The actual EP release itself won't happen until spring of 2015, but all of those who invest in the KickStarter will get early releases and bonus material, as listed in the rewards section of this KickStarter.
The reason we are targeting early 2015 for the release of our EP is partially so that we don’t get lost in the holiday shuffle. This will also give us time to get a couple of simple videos together as well so we can truly promote this effort we’re asking you to invest in. All of you who choose to support us now will get early sneak peek digital releases of the material, opportunities to appear in our videos, access to private listening parties, and more in the coming months.
We know it’s asking a lot to invest now and then wait to see the fruits come to bear early in 2015. We want to make this the best album we can, though, and we know that rushing the creative process won't help with that. We also want to get the strategy and marketing right when it comes time to release the finished product. So taking the time do this all right ensures that we'll be maximizing the value of all your donations!
We have a great team working with us at 25th Street Studios, and we also have Gabriel Shepard of Webfoot Audio (http://webfootaudio.com/) manning the boards and co-producing alongside Joe Markert. Gabe has an amazing track record having worked with artists like Mark Kozelek, Cake, OK Go and many others. He also gets the credit for rescuing our last EP, Fallen Stars, when it was unclear whether or how it would be finished.
We know we've got the chops to get this done and the musicians on our extended team, including Casey Cameron (keys, string arrangements) and Dan Feiszli (bass), are top notch players who do this for a living.
Together we can bring this home with your help!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
