About

The goal of this project is to bring Eric Joyner's artwork to life by creating a fun mobile game based on his colorful and thought-provoking robot and donut paintings.

Eric is a world-renowned San Francisco artist who has been creating paintings like these for more than 15 years.

Eric's art is owned by the likes of J.J. Abrams and George Lucas. It's used on the set of The Big Bang Theory TV show and as album cover art for bands like Ben Folds Five. See more details about Eric in the "About the Creators" section below.

There are many types of games Eric's art would work well for; however, this first game will be a parallax side-scrolling, endless-runner. Other examples of endless-runner games you may already know include: Jetpack Joyride, Temple Run and Super Mario Run.

Our game will allow players to quickly jump into the beautiful world of the Robots and Donuts universe for a few minutes or a few hours and have a lot of fun exploring and collecting valuable donuts.

You'll be able to select from a number of different customizable and upgradable robot characters to roam environments like the American Southwest, Alpine Forests and even Outer Space in your search to find the perfect donuts for your growing donut shop empire.

The search will not be easy. There will be many obstacles in your path as you collect your precious donuts. Will you collect more than your friends? Will your donut shop be the envy of the leaderboards? Let's find out.

The game will initially launch on Apple iOS mobile devices for a premium price in the range of $1.99 to $4.99 USD, to be determined after beta-testing. An Android version will follow after we have a solid iOS version.

We also have a stretch goal to bring this game to PC, if we reach $200K.

If we meet our stretch goal, we'll create a PC version to be released on Steam. If our campaign is wildly overfunded, we may look at other platforms like the Nintendo Switch.

Eric Joyner is a San Francisco artist who has been creating paintings of robots and donuts for more than 15 years now. You can check out his full biography here: https://ericjoyner.com/about-eric-joyner/

Eric's art has enjoyed a loyal following owned by the likes of Hollywood icons like directors J.J. Abrams and George Lucas and has been used on TV for the show The Big Bang Theory and album covers like Ben Folds Five "The Sound of the Life of the Mind."

Eric's most recent art book "Robotic Existentialism" explores 11 different themes including country living, transportation and heavy machinery; all of which include his favorite painting subjects, robots and donuts. It is from his extensive body of artwork that we will be drawing our inspiration and storyboards for the look and feel of this new mobile game.

You can hear more about Eric's background and art process from the man himself in the video interview he gave to the Corey Helford Gallery (below).

The other driving force in this project is Bob Heubel, a technology evangelist and inventor living in the San Francisco East Bay town of San Leandro, California. He has spent nearly 20 years working with game development houses, publishers, app stores and mobile manufacturers. He's been a game-design judge, gameplay-tester and speaker at many international game conventions presenting on such topics as how to improve user experiences and how to simply make games more fun to play.

Bob Heubel
Bob Heubel

An avid gamer since the early days of the Atari 2600 and a lover of all things science-fiction, Bob envisioned a game based on the Robots and Donuts art the first time he saw Eric's work at a local art show.

It wasn't until 5 years later, however, that he was able to find enough time to devote to a project like this and approached Eric about the idea. Eric was enthusiastic about the possibility and now they've launched a company and this Kickstarter campaign to bring their vision to life, with your help.

After reviewing a number of mobile game production houses, Eric and Bob chose Remote Control Productions (RCP) GmbH in Germany to help oversee the project. RCP has a family of developer teams and they've chosen their "It Matters Games" team to handle the construction of the game. Bob will act as the game's overseeing producer and Eric as its executive art director to keep the game true to the existing Robots and Donuts universe.

Based in Munich, Remote Control Productions and its family of developer teams has a long track record of successful game credits dating back more than a decade for such clients as Ubisoft, Rovio, Daedalic, Spil Games and Tivola Mobile, just to name a few.

You can learn more about RCP from their website here.

Their experienced production team, It Matters Games, founded in 2011 and located in Berlin, Germany has successfully released 19 games for iOS, Android, PC and Virtual Reality (VR) devices. Their company mission is to develop unique and beautiful games that are based on proven gameplay mechanics with a real life added-value twist. So, we know they're the right team to bring Eric's art to life!

They will be using the Unity game development platform that's been used for a number of other hugely successful mobile games, like Crossy Road, Temple Run, Angry Birds 2 and thousands of others. More than half of ALL mobile games worldwide use the Unity platform, so we know we're picking a solid foundation on which to build.

You can learn more about It Matters Games from their website here.

To learn more about the game platform, visit the Unity website located here: https://unity3d.com/public-relations

Updates on the game development will be posted on this site if funding is successful, but to give you a sense of what a generic parallax side-scrolling game construction looks like, see the test animation example below from It Matters Games showing the robot riding the motorcycle.

A note about the art print rewards. All prints come on archival canvas or archival paper as noted in reward descriptions. This means the art stock is acid-free and will resist yellowing over the years so the art print colors will remain vibrant. All archival paper prints will have a minimum one-inch white space border and are shipped in protective shipping tubes.

Risks and challenges

Making a video game is not simple. Making one that's both beautiful and fun to play is even harder. Neither Eric nor Bob are programmers, but the two of them are sticking to their strengths and paying experts in game development to minimize the risk. As Dirty Harry once said, "A man's got to know his limitations," and Eric and Bob do know theirs.

Eric is going to ensure the art in the game is amazing and Bob is going to ensure the game is fun to play and something you're going to want to share with all your family and friends. They'll leave the programming to their talented programming team using the world-renowned, award-winning Unity game-creation platform.

However this turns out, if funded, Eric and Bob will be eternally grateful and post regular updates to keep you informed of their game progress and reward shipments.

Making a video game is not easy. But it'll be rewarding. Let's take the journey together and see what's possible with the art of Robots & Donuts. Join us, won't you?

    Custom Commissioned Original Painting

Why buy an existing Eric Joyner piece of art when you can commission a new stunning painting customized with the subject matter you want to see? Want your family immortalized in a robotic family portrait? Sure. That works, or tell Eric what you want as a general theme, just as long as it involves robots and donuts and isn't too risqué.

As an added bonus, if you live within 30 miles of Eric's San Francisco studio, we will hand deliver your unframed painting and refund your shipping cost.

If shipped, we will include insurance.

Painting size limited to 576 square inches in any aspect ratio, so think 12x48, or 24x24, 16x36, etc. Your choice!
