Here's our interview with the Tallahassee NPR affiliate:
We wanted HIT! to be a traditional superhero story! But set in the gritty world of any Martin Scorsese film. Our superhero, Connor Connolly, is an Irish brute and an unstoppable force within the South Irish mob. The super villain: Patrick O'Reilly, a mean son of a gun and the head of the Irish Crime Family in Boston. Patrick is ruthless and vicious, but he's a shrewd business man and knows how to operate in the seedy underbelly where he lives. We've always loved superhero and mafia stories and wanted to combine the classic super hero vs. villain story line with the world of gangsters.
Our story begins in Arkansas, where Connor Connolly is dispatched by Patrick to kill two targets living in an inconspicuous suburban neighborhood. Connor is given an address and an address alone; no names, no descriptions, nothing. But being the loyal and ruthless soldier he is, Connor does as he is told. That is, until he discovers the targets he was sent to kill are a part of his past that he thought he had long since abandoned. Now Connor must find a way to deal with a life that he thought he escaped and figure out who he can trust in a business where your best friend wouldn't think twice about putting a bullet in your head.
HIT! is scripted as a six issue story arc. This Kickstarter goes to raising money to produce Issue 1. We need an initial $3,000, at least, to start printing Issue 1, advertise it and distribute it. The plan is to have this Kickstarter project launch the entire series. Every dollar we make off of Issue 1 will go into Issue 2 and every dollar from Issue 2 will go to Issue 3 and so on.
If we reach our KickStarter goal, we have a very regimented plan for distributing our comic. We are based in Tallahassee, FL and have already spoken with all of our local comic shops and they are excited to carry a local indie book. We are also going to reach out to local shop in the surrounding areas (Gainesville, Jacksonville, Orlando, etc.). Once we debut our comic, we will hit the Con Circuit hard, promoting and selling HIT!.
This is a very ambitious project and we need all the help we can get! So please, tell your friends, family and strangers on the sidewalk! You can send people to our twitter at @Gentleman_Baby or our Facebook Page. Or you can send them to this very page!
We ask for help from each and everyone of you, with one heartfelt promise: If you donate even a dollar, you will help realize our wildest dreams (and be a part of a pretty kick ass comic, if we do say so ourselves!).
Our artist Daniel just sent me some more artwork. Take a look!
As you know, our goal is $3,000. However, if we are to exceed this goal, we want to pile on the rewards for all of our faithful donors. So here are our stretch goals:
STRETCH GOAL #1: $4,000
Every donor of $15 or more gets a copy of HIT! with variant cover art. Every donor of less than $15 gets a PDF copy of Issue 1.
STRETCH GOAL #2: $5,000
Every donor gets a PDF copy of the script for Issue 2 as well as a print of character concept art for Jerry, a mysterious character who appears in Issue 2.
STRETCH GOAL #3: $6,000
Every donor will receive a print of character concept art for Joey "Lips" McGee, Connor's most formidable foe who first appears in issue 3. In addition, we will have a drawing for all donors who are willing and able to do the following: one fan will be chosen to help promote HIT! at a Florida comic-con. This will include a ticket to the event as well as up to two nights in a hotel (maximum $100 a night).
STRETCH GOAL #4: $7,000
The Official HIT! Production Book. We will pull back the curtain and create a book that will include early drafts of the script (with notes), character concept art, panel sketches and a bevy of other things that show how HIT! has gone from script to comic.
Risks and challenges
We have tried to be meticulous in our planning, but we know there are always setbacks!
Right now myself and my artist have planned to have our comic available by Free Comic Book Day 2013 (that's the first week in May) at the very latest!
Our artist on this project is a new father and is often preoccupied by his young Gentleman Baby. But we planned for that and he is working on illustrating the comic as we speak!
As far as distributing the comics, we have been worried about obstacles in the form of the dreaded OBSCURITY!!! Yes, we're afraid no one will know what HIT! is! In order to address this problem, we've already begun a promotional campaign in Tallahassee and we're building a presence in the social media realm. In addition, all of our local comic shops are in full support of this indie comic and will not only sell but promote and get the word out.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
