About

Tetraphobia is a roguelite twin stick shooter set in a fantasy world where four Titans control floating islands referred to as "The Fractured Sky". Featuring fully destructible environments and a host of unique enemies, battle your way through procedurally generated low poly islands in the search for artifacts and discover if there’s any substance behind the fear that is Tetraphobia.

The concept behind Tetraphobia the game came from the real life phobia. Tetraphobia, the fear, originates in eastern asia where people try to avoid usage of the number four. Due to similarities in their spoken language, the word for death and the word for four sound very similar. I wanted to take this idea and build a game world around it's origins and give a real reason why people should fear "The Four"

A demo that puts you in charge of the kickstarter

The demo features 3 different bosses, 28 different powerups, 20 different types of enemies and a host of different island layouts

Every boss killed will give you Kickstarter tokens to vote for which of the Titan's concept art gets released next (there's countdown timers on the giant scrolls in the demo), or trade collected souls for Kickstarter tokens . Spend these at the respective Titan's pillar at the Kickstarter island in the demo. Check the Titans section to learn more about each Titan and what they represent. 

The Kickstarter demo tracks global statistics over the duration of the campaign, so head over to the Kickstarter island to see all the stats or push yourself to try and get the quickest time for completing the demo.

Some features of the demo are implemented in a simple way to give a basic representation of the intended release feature. To get an understanding of what the feature will be like once released, read the Release Features section as some of these features are going to be built into much bigger and interactive game-play elements.

Concept art release schedule (make sure you spend all your tokens before these dates to ensure you vote is counted). If you want to see all art before you pledge but don't want to get involved in voting then come back to the campaign on the 22nd of October when all the art will be released! Two's company but three's a crowd(funding)

This is Trixx, Reno and Benny your three companions on your Journey; They take a light hearted approach to their treasure hunting with a focus on fun. They'd tell you it's careful planning but in reality it's more a happy coincidence when everything comes together.

Trixx is short for Beatrix, an explorer at heart, she’s always on the search for an interesting adventure and the chance at finding something of value. An optimistic outlook that some would argue borders on dillusion she always sees the positives no matter how bad the situation. Strong, athletic and a master archer she will use her magically imbued bow which never runs out of arrows and her braces imbuing her with magical abilities to fight her way through The Fractured Sky.

Reno rides on her back and can mostly be spotted napping or throwing out some “constructive” criticism, fear not he will help you out from time to time by bartering artifacts on your behalf. He has a real knack for getting the best deals out of people, although he does have a tendency to get distracted by shiny things. You can find artifacts for Reno whilst exploring The Fractured Sky that can help you in combat, some can even turn that top hat into more than just a fashion statement...  

Benny is an academic and very possessive over his belongings, he is from the same realm as the Titans but was never infected by the Titan's corruption. He’s on his own personal quest to document all the artifacts of the Titans and details of their followers. Only strong enough to get so far on his own he uses his understanding of the Titan's artifacts to keep resurrecting you and helping you to battle further on the new knowledge found.  If you’re stuck on a certain enemy or want to know which artifacts you’re yet to discover you can check over at Benny's catalogue (but try to keep Reno's dirty paw prints out of there!).

Your pledges will help to fund the creation of unique animations and humorous voice acting to help bring these 3 characters to life.

The demo offers examples of some of these gameplay concepts in a very basic way. Here I wanted to detail these features in their intended release state.

A host of unique enemies and artifacts - Custom enemies, bosses and artifacts built around the Titan's themes; you will find unique challenges and discover unique builds to smash or creep your way through The Fractured Sky.

Procedurally Generated low poly world - Procedurally generated world mixing ancient Asian architecture with a fantasy world driven by the Titans. Find beauty in the dangers brought forth by The Four. Learn more in The Fractured Sky section!

Run and Gun approach to combat -  Dash, sprint and blast your way across islands; Pick your moments to aim your bow and fire.

Fully destructible environments  Destructible environments allow you to open up the game environment to your play style. Blast away the cover to leave yourself an open plane to fight or funnel enemies around terrain before unloading your barrage.

Day/Night cycle - Enemies and artifacts will play differently at night compared to day time and some are only seen at certain times of day. Night time reduces visibility and increases the strength of enemies; there's more fear in the darkness. 

Taking a gamble - Risk vs reward! Barter artifacts in the middle of your run for the chance of something better (some artifacts can only be found by bartering). You’ll be without your artifact and Reno until you find him again on the next set of islands, so be smart about what you trade. As you can see from the GIF he always handles your artifacts with care and diligence. 

Rescue those consumed by Tetraphobia - Build up a small town to help unlock different artifacts, receive quests and take on unique challenges. (Increase your pledge to create your own quests/challenges/powerups or even become an NPC yourself!)

Battle Against Weather effects - Heavy rain, thunderstorms and other dramatic weather effects can have an impact on a run. Be aware of the weather and on the lookout for enemies who can change it...

The Titans or The Four are a group of strong enemies that rule The Fractured Sky. Each of them embody different beliefs and characteristics and are often battling each other as much as spreading their sickly fears. Traversing through The Fractured Sky will pit you up against these tough enemies and their followers.

Grunts - The grunt characters are the weakest of the Titan's followers and are constantly trying to prove themselves. Wielding the death Kanji on their belts they attack with reckless abandon for the chance to show their worth. Ranged, melee and flying enemy types they can traverse terrain differently with some able to leap or shoot over obstacles. 

War - A titan who focuses primarily on raw strength and revels in the glory of battle. A veteran of many battles. He despises the concept of “magic” believing it to be trickery and a dishonourable way to battle. True warriors do not hide behind illusions. His minions follow his lead choosing to battle with skill and raw power. War artifacts give you flat stat upgrades or unique modifiers for your weapon; improving your damage making you a formidable opponent based on brute strength alone.

The War faction

 Greed - A focus on possession and greed, this titan only sees things for what their value is. He usually remains impartial to the other titans seeing and embracing the benefits he gets from their widespread fear. Vitality does have a tendency to destroy his carefully procured gardens with her corrupting plants but her sickening beauty keeps him from lashing out. With a love of gold, gems and souls his artifacts focus on wealth and soul harvesting; be careful though as Greed's minions are just as likely to pilfer those artifacts from you - dead or alive.

Vitality - Strangling the life out of others to make room for their own, the Titan of vitality spreads her seeds by consuming the life source from those around her. Spreading her vines and corrupting the ground, she leaves places overgrown and route with danger. She has no affiliates to other titans only seeing the potential of consuming them and their worlds. Her followers offer unique challenges consuming those around them and summoning enemies in their own image or wrapping themselves in vines for extra protection.

Magic - Not all magic is the same. The Titan of Magic uses his power to corrupt the mind and twist the body as it rips through its possessor. Specialising in illusion and trickery, the magic Titan and his followers provide a tricky task in defeating. Manipulating the weather and using their magic to blast you with imbued projectiles that can disrupt your use of spirit, they require more than just brute strength to defeat. Magics artifacts will boost your abilities and give you unique ways to battle through The Fractured Sky using illusion and outwitting your opponents without the need for your bow. He shares a love for corruption with Vitality.

 ????? - Revealed on October the 22nd

The universe that Tetraphobia is built around is known as "The Fractured Sky". These set of islands that float in the sky were consumed by the Titans when they came crashing to the world. Slowly they infected these islands and started spreading their fear far and wide, corrupting those they touched with anger, fear and anxiety.

Inspired by the origins of Tetraphobia in the real world, I wanted to build a real fantasy environment based around this fear and add a real meaning to why people should fear The Four. I've tried to incorporate ancient Asian architecture into the islands as you can see in the main concept art. As part of this I want to bring the character designs forward and integrate that further into the monsters that inhabit these islands. Modifying armours and their effects dependant on the Titan that grunt enemies align with. Imbuing their abilities to that Titans effects will be a key way to ensure that gameplay stays fresh and challenging every run. 

Creating regions in The Fractured Sky is an important step in making the world of Tetraphobia unique. Each of these titans represent different attributes and the islands they live and die on should represent them. Modifying key traps and strategic positions, based on which titan you are battling, will help in crafting a different experience depending on which titans islands you're currently battling through. Greed will not take nicely to you spoiling his luscious gardens and war will be enraged by you using magic on his sacred islands of battle. Be smart and be aware as you seek to cleanse the titans corruption.

Your pledges will be used to bring these concepts to life and create a unique world that truly embodies the titans, the fear they've spread and the corruption they've sewn.

I wanted all of the money from this campaign to go entirely on the development costs that's why there's no physical rewards included in this campaign. This  means no tax is expected to be paid since all the money will be used on the project. Here's the cost breakdown of where the funds will be spent

In any kickstarter I think it's important to know who your pledges are going to, as an investment in a project is an investment in the person aswell. 

My name is Danny Kemp and I have always been a lover of video games and the stories they can tell. I have so many fond memories of games throughout my life and I think it's amazing how a game experience can stick with you whether it be through fantastic storytelling or interesting gameplay. I still remember big moments, twists and excitement from games I played so long ago and It's an absolute pleasure to be involved in creating something like that for others. I also own a cat, so by definition the internet should love me? (even if the cat doesn't)

Tetraphobia is a solo project that I work on in my free time. My day job is working as a Senior Programmer for a company that specialises in 3d visualisation technology using Unity3d. My academic studies have all been around programming and games engines and I'm proud to say I have a masters in this stuff. Hopefully that fills you with a bit more confidence in me and my ability to deliver the final product! Still unsure? Come chat with me, there's links at the bottom of the page.

My core strengths are in programming, gameplay, project management and creative vision for the project; however I lack the skills/expertise in other things like Animation, 3d modelling and 2d art. This is where your pledges will come in, the money raised in the kickstarter will help fund these parts of the project to create the unique world of Tetraphobia.

With Tetraphobia I've tried to create a memorable cast of characters and a game built with a focus on fun, replayability and challenge. Inspired by my favourite bits of popular rougelites Binding of Isaac and Enter the Gungeon, I've put a highlight on creating a host of unique artifacts that, when combined together, provide unique and chaotic ways to play the game.

I expect the delivery date of the final game to be Q4 2020. A lot of the groundworks have been laid already, as you can see in the demo, it's just a case of creating more content, swapping out models and replacing animations. There's still a fair amount of game design to do and new features I want to add for boss/enemy mechanics. I'm confident this is all do-able in a year.

I hope you enjoy the Kickstarter demo and voting for your favourite Titans and I hope The Fractured Sky, it's inhabitants and it's creatures excite you as much as it does me. I really am looking forward to finishing this game and giving you an indie roguelite with some unique gameplay you haven't seen in other games of the genre. Risks and challenges

With any video game project there comes risk and challenges in delivering the product especially when it's a solo project. I hope that my game current demo proves that I have enough motivation and determination to see a project to the end and you're not going to be left feeling empty handed once you've pledged.
