- Do you love using the freshest possible ingredients in your cooking?
- Do you need more space for your plants?
- Is your growing season never quite long enough?
- Is early gardening just not convenient enough with the rain, mud, and unpredictable frost?
- Do you know someone who can't get enough gardening?
Here is a clever solution...
ScreenDoor GreenHouse is an inexpensive greenhouse that easily replaces the screen on your sliding glass door.
The cool part is: you can slide your greenhouse to the side and use the sliding glass door normally or move the greenhouse to the open side and access all your favorite plants from the comfort of your home.
ScreenDoor GreenHouse is:
- The only greenhouse that replaces the screen in your sliding glass door.
- The only greenhouse you can access from the comfort of your living room.
- The only greenhouse that absorbs wasted energy given off by your sliding glass door.
Cook with the freshest ingredients. If you like healthy and organic foods, your produce is only steps away from where you cook.
Extend your growing season. Most states in the US only have about half the year to grow in their garden without frost. With ScreenDoor GreenHouse you can extend both the beginning and the end of your growing season.
Increase your growing space. One-third of households don't have space for an outdoor garden at all. With ScreenDoor GreenHouse, anyone with a sliding glass door can have a garden, and with it decorating your home, you will never forget to make sure your favorite plants have whatever care they need.
Stay comfortable inside your home. During the spring and fall, one thing you can count on is rain and mud. With ScreenDoor GreenHouse you can access your favorite produce without even putting on your shoes.
I'm giving one to my mom. Christmas is just around the corner and ScreenDoor GreenHouse makes a fantastic gift. Do you know anyone who may want one? I expect to ship before Christmas.
Installs in a snap. ScreenDoor GreenHouse assembles in minutes. Just align the like numbers and snap it together. No need for instructions and not a single tool required to put it together. The heavy duty extruded aluminum and UV stabilized materials will last for years to come.
Fits all standard sliding glass doors. Most sliding glass doors have a standard vertical opening. ScreenDoor Greenhouse is completely adjustable and will fit any standard vertical opening. It also comes in two standard sizes: 30" wide and 36" wide.
Contributors get a bonus! ScreenDoor GreenHouse is already getting a lot of attention. After the Kickstarters are all satisfied, I plan to sell into retail stores. The MSRP will be $199.
Who am I? My name is Jason Giddings. I am an aerospace engineer and have spent the last 22 years of my life designing and manufacturing product ideas for other people and businesses.
I designed the ScreenDoor GreenHouse simply because I want one, and I figured other folks may want one, too. My wife, daughter, and I live in Idaho. We have a fairly short growing season here. I didn't want to spend thousands of dollars to build a full greenhouse, and really don't have the space for it. It occurred to me that our house has two sliding glass doors that get excellent sunlight. As an engineer and serial-entrepreneur I couldn't resist and started brainstorming ideas. The ScreenDoor GreenHouse is my solution!
What are the rewards? I focused on creating rewards that people would like to have.
If you want to be involved but don't need a ScreenDoor Greenhouse, you can get a "Kickstarter Backer" bumper sticker for a $5 contribution or a T-shirt for a $40 contribution.
If you want a ScreenDoor GreenHouse you can contribute $129 and get one in 30" or 36".
How will the funds be used? I hope to manufacture hundreds or even thousands of these for Kickstarters. I would love to continue on afterward and build a business around this product.
To do all that, I need manufacturing tools. Injection molds, aluminum extrusion dies, cutting dies, and various other tools will be custom made to make the quality parts that make up the ScreenDoor GreenHouse.
The total cost for the tooling was quoted at $60,000. That includes a 20% safety margin. On top of that I have added another $20,000 to make sure I have enough to make and ship the actual products out to the Kickstarters. So my total is $80,000.
Risks and challenges
I have designed literally hundreds of products, some were big successes and some were miserable failures. I can tell you first hand that I have learned far more from the failures than from the successes.
Developing products is always a risky path. I think that's one reason we all love it so much.
I have worked really hard to take as much risk out of this project as I can. The highest risk projects have extra complexity like printed circuit boards, software, firmware, and often times all three. This project has nothing like that.
The ScreenDoor GreenHouse is a simple mechanical design with no real surprises. All the tooling is straight forward and very predictable with regard to its function.
Prototypes of all the parts have been made and assembled with perfect success. The project tooling and production right down to the packaging has been fully quoted.
One risk that can be expected is that tooling prices will sometimes go up, if changes are made mid-stream. Prototyping can safeguard against "feature creep" but I added 20% to the budget just in case something pops up that will require a design adjustment.
The other possible risk is always timeline. Tooling on this project has been quoted to take 30-40 days to complete, but there are always adjustments that must be made after the first parts are run. Textures, paint, packaging, instructions... all these things can require extensions to the schedule to perfect. With that in mind, I have doubled the total amount of time that was estimated at the quoting phase of the project.
My priority throughout this project is to do my best by you!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
