About this project
If you missed the Kickstarter you can head here or to this very average website to keep up to date with Vivarium and find out when it hits retail shelves!
We are funded! Thanks to your support Vivarium is real and each backer will receive one beautiful copy of Vivarium!
Now on to the stretch goals!
We've unlocked the extra Event cards and a custom plastic insert for the game box. Next up is increasing the size of the tokens! We're almost there!
Each copy of Vivarium will include an extra 4 Event cards bringing the total to 24. Committed players will be able to play 6 year games. :)
Each copy of Vivarium will include a custom plastic insert inside the box to hold and store all the components.
All the tokens in Vivarium will be at least 20mm in diameter allowing them to be more easily handled but still able to fit onto the map.
All of the game tiles, the player boards and the tokens will be made with heavier cardboard stock making them harder to move and increasing their overall quality.
All the cards in Vivarium will be 300gsm black core paper.
If this goal is reached then a special victory track will be included in each copy of Vivarium so that players can more publicly track everyone's Fitness. This has been a hotly requested item that requires some rejigging, art work and added costs, but I have plans to integrate with some other components to conserve table space and make it work efficiently with the rest of the game!
Vivarium is a strategy board game for 2-5 players where you begin the game as a species fighting for survival inside a new environment. Equipped with just your instincts and fears, you must utilize your species unique abilities and adapt in order to survive.
By acquiring new cards -
Claiming territory -
Enduring natural disasters -
Defending the Oasis and completing objectives you can increase your fitness to survive.
The player with the most fitness at the end of the game wins!
Vivarium has 8 distinct species, a modular game board and varied seasonal events that ensure every game is unique and layered with strategy.
Do you have what it takes to survive?
Vivarium's box is loaded with lots of pretty components, check it out!
That's a lot, right!?
You can see what Undead Viking has to say about Vivarium here:
NVS Gameplays very graciously did a PnP preview of Vivarium, have a look at what they thought below:
Simply put -
- IT'S A LOT OF FUN!
- This is it. This is possibly the only chance you'll be able to acquire Vivarium. There's always a chance of future print runs, but no guarantees so back it while you can!
- It's beautiful. The art and design that's gone into Vivarium really shines. The illustrations on all the components are top notch and really capture the beauty of the natural world.
- It's a really good value proposition. $60 AUD gets you the game for a price well below MSRP. Vivarium is huge, not only are there a lot of components in the box but the replay value is massive. You're saving money by backing now AND helping dreams come true!
- It sends a message. The story, theme and even some components of this campaign (see Rewards) have the potential to send a message to Vivarium's audience. About the beauty of nature, and its fragility. The more people that engage with Vivarium, the more people there are thinking about animals and hopefully appreciating them.
- Vivarium needs you. The more people that get behind Vivarium, the better off it is. More backers unlocks more stretch goals and ultimately makes Vivarium as good as it can be.
Vivarium is a strategy game with high replay value. It combines dynamic deck building with resource management, combat, and territory control. Each game creates a unique game filled with tough decisions and harsh consequences.
Here is a link to the current rule book for Vivarium.
It is still a work in progress and parts of it may be subject to change.
If you have any feedback please let me know!
The more eyes on it the better. :)
You can also download a free monochrome Print-And-Play here.
You'll have to use counters or dice to track resources rather than use dials and naturally the experience will be somewhat diminished but this is a great way to get a feel for the game before backing.
Here is a look at Vivarium while set up and a short explanation about the components of the game:
And here is the subsequent play through (go bears!):
Please note that the current rule book, Print-And-Play and videos may not end up being completely representative of the finished product (with your help the finished product will be even more fantastic!).
*If you select the 'Keystone Collector' pledge level and are in Australia, the US or the EU you can add an extra copy of Vivarium to your pledge for $60 AUD.
You do not need to pay extra shipping for your 2nd and 3rd copy.
This way you can receive up to 3 copies of Vivarium, all covered under your initial shipping cost.
Unfortunately, this is only doable in the above regions and you will have to pay another game's worth of shipping if Vivarium is not being shipped to one of the above regions. This also applies if you are adding a 4th copy to your pledge.
You can add more copies of Vivarium to your pledge by clicking the 'Manage Your Pledge' button. You'll then have the option to change the Pledge Amount. Add $60 AUD for each additional copy plus the appropriate amount of shipping for your region per copy.
First things first - Vivarium will be shipping from within respective regions meaning that the cost you pay now is all you have should have to pay. All customs and freight fees should be handled before shipping to backers and all possible steps will be taken to ensure this happens.
Shipping will always be a challenge, and for a first time creator, it's even more daunting. In order to reduce risk, I am utilizing the skills and knowledge of experienced fulfillment companies and keeping the process simple.
Utilizing the Stonemaier method, one company will be handling Australian fulfillment, another company will handle American fulfillment and a third company will be handling Europe, Canada and the rest of the world.
I've received quotes from lots of companies and these 3 provide the most cost effective service while also granting peace of mind that Vivarium will be fulfilled in an efficient, secure and professional manner.
Vivarium is a large game, weighing in at around 1.5kg. With packaging it will be closer to 2kg as such I will be absorbing $10 AUD of each game's shipping costs leaving your shipping costs quite competitive.
Corey Le Mesurier is the designer of Vivarium with 5 years working in the board game industry and even more in the general gaming industry. Vivarium is the first game designed by Corey, and hopefully not the last.
Michael Roberts is the primary illustrator for Vivarium. We have him to thank for all the beautiful images we see on the cards, the box, the player boards and the map tiles. Michael helped bring Vivarium to life, giving form and substance to all the species and the environments in the game. This was Michael's first time illustrating for a board game, and frankly, it didn't show. He smashed it out of the park.
You can see more of Michael's work here:
Rose 'Rocky' Hammer created the symbols you see on the cards, designed all the tokens and was a constant source of advice and expertise on the graphic design of Vivarium. Rose has heaps of experience illustrating animals and was the main illustrator for another board game, Dragon Racer.
You can see more of Rose's work here:
Alexis Sabarre, Chevelle Grey, Krishna Sharma and Felice Sciaraffia all contributed to the design and development of Vivarium in various ways. You're all awesome!
Vivarium is the work of many hands. It is the collective advice, imagination and time of so many people. From all the wonderful play testers to everyone who simply said 'Hey Corey, how's your game going?', we have you to thank for this project being here. Sincerely, thank you.
Tell your friends, throw a message in a bottle into the ocean, tell your family and/or scream it from the top of a mountain! Spread the word and help Vivarium become as big as possible!
You can help Vivarium by liking the Facebook page and starting some chatter on the page.
You can show your support by heading to BGG and becoming a fan, posting a comment, rating it or generally causing a stir!
Additionally you can also use the custom pictures below as your profile picture to share your solidarity.
Thanks for stopping by and contributing to the campaign. ^_^
Risks and challenges
The art and graphic design for Vivarium is done. Aside from minor changes and polishing of the text Vivarium is close to print ready. This means that as far as design goes, the hard work is pretty much done.
I've produced two waves of prototypes through the manufacturer that will print the final copies of Vivarium so I've had time and experience in file preparation and testing the components. The manufacturer has provided great quality components and I'm sure the final product will look absolutely beautiful. This process should not experience much delay due to the files being for the most part already prepared. However, I've factored some extra time into the schedule to account for any unexpected delays.
Once Vivarium is funded I expect the main challenge to be fulfillment. As a first time publisher, this can be very daunting. Which is why I've opted to utilize experienced fulfillment companies with great communication and strong track records. I believe that trusting in the experience of established fulfillment companies and reducing my personal involvement in the process will provide the opportunity to give a stellar service while allowing me to personally learn the ropes for future projects.
Regardless, the estimated delivery time has a buffer of a few months in order to account for any delays or issues that may arise in fulfillment.
Overall, the main challenges are those of a first time publisher, and by partnering with a tested manufacturer and experienced fulfillment companies the effects of these challenges will be reduced.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
