100 Years - A live album recording at Club Passim
We are the Boston based band called The Great Molasses Flood.
On January 15, 2019 we will record our first album, a live album, at the legendary folk venue Club Passim. This night also happens to be the 100th anniversary of the very real molasses flood disaster that struck Boston's North End. We named our band after that dark strange day, and for this concert we have written many new songs about the flood and how it changed our beloved Boston.
It was a strangely warm day, 100 years ago, on January 15, 1919 when a tank holding 2.5 million gallons of molasses exploded on Commercial Street in the heart of Boston’s most busy neighborhood. It left a trail of destruction, toppling buildings, knocking down the elevated train supports, and the loss of 21 lives. To this day, people still say they can smell molasses on hot summer days as they walk through the North End of Boston. It is a tale that includes corrupt business practices, the exploitation of immigrants, molasses moving at 30 miles an hour, and many more parts that make it feel incredibly relevant today.
This will be our first recording as a band, and we cannot think of a more important place to start. We are excited to share our new songs - we hope to spread the word of this important historical event, and remember the 21 souls lost.
The concert will be split into two parts. The first set will be dedicated to the Boston Molasses Flood, and the second will be a set of all our other new songs we have written together. Even on this somber night, we will infuse the recording with levity and joy.
We would love for you to be part of this night with us by coming to the show at Club Passim, and/or supporting us on this Kickstarter page.
Money Breakdown –
We are only requesting $1000.00 as our goal. The funding will enable us to record, mix, and digitally distribute the night. Our stretch goal of $2000.00 and beyond would allow us to physically press the album into a CD with a goal for radio distribution, professionally master the album for radio play, and more.
We also want the levels to be affordable. You can get the t-shirt with the CD for only $25.00. We want as many people as possible to take this journey with us.
Risks and challenges
Three members of The Great Molasses Flood have run successful Kickstarter campaigns before for their solo careers, and we feel great about our chances of meeting our goals for the night. We do have kiddos, one fiance, and family always comes first, so that might slow us down a little, but we promise to come through to all who support us.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
